He's "surrounded" by higher profile programs (Big 12) and has been able to recruit to his needs. Yeah it's the Mountain West, but he has multiple 10+ win seasons. He is a no-nonsense kind of coach whose background is defense yet his offenses put up 30 pts per game. My biggest concern with Patterson would be could he get the players at MSU. Of course this applies to whoever is head coach.
I used to live in Ft Worth back in the 80's and adopted the Frogs. It was tough getting the athletes to match up with the Texas' and A&Ms even being a member of the (then) Southwest Conference. To build up the program like he has is a pretty big deal.
