My parents are on a MSU cruise with Greg Byrne this week...

Anything I should have them tell him?

They flew a MSU flag on the pool deck today while cruising in the Baltic Sea..

I wish we still had him around..

I liked him too, but

I also think Stricklin is good.

Do you think anything would be different than it is now if Byrne would have stayed?

Just curious...other than some terrible uniforms I can't really think of anything that Byrne would have done differently. Or where I thought Stricklin dropped the ball.

I don't think Stans would have weathered the Hawaii fighting scandal. The RSS would have been gone..
I think we would have hired a known commodity.
Rick Ray would not be our basketball coach, not sure if that is good or bad at this point.

Well one thing, upon many others, is the basketball coaching search wouldn't have been a complete circus with people turning us down publicly. Byrne isn't the ninja for nothing.

Stricklin is an improvement over LT, but he can't hold Byrne's jock. Stricklin wasn't quite ready a gig this big, if Byrne had stayed around about 3-4 more years I feel he would have.

Those cruises are marketed by the MSU alumni assn as well as other Universities . Went on one in January and there were a total of 4 folks from MSU and then numerous from other Universities such as LSU, Clemson, Southern Cal, Oregon State and others. The University gets a cut for letting the folks access our alumni base. I am sure Greg went through Arizona. Wish we had him back.

Didnt Derek Dooley openly turn us down during the Mullen hire?

No. There was lots of speculation around different coaches, but it was pretty tight lipped. To be fair, I'm not sure that the leaks around the basketball search were Stricklin's fault. It seemed like they came from the people we contacted. That could be because Stricklin didn't do a good job requiring discretion, but it seems just as possible it's a difference in culture between the basketball coach community and football coach community. And it's also possible the people claiming to have been contacted were full of ****.

No. He was never even a candidate for our job. He got a few mentions from people on message boards, but there's no indication we ever even contacted him. I never understood why people thought he would be a candidate in the first place.

as of now, i have no serious issues with stricklin, but with byrne, i feel like there would be less gimmicky stuff going on. hastags, snow bowl pro-mos, ****** uniforms, some of the marketing stuff is a little over the top, but in the big picture, we are significantly improving the athletic infrastructure...which the groundwork was laid by byrne. i think rick ray probably wouldnt have been hired, but at this point, we have no idea if that was a good thing or a bad thing.

byrne did seem to be vastly more calculated. both miles ahead of LT.

The Derek Dooley hire was a rumor started by one of the Memphis TV stations, I think Fox 13, that said they were told Dooley was the coach by someone "inside the program". Whoever it was, was full of ****.

Slight Hijack, but speaking of Byrne...

I had the opportunity to take the kids to Starkville yesterday and we did a quick tour of the campus. My daughter is playing softball now, so we went to the SB stadium and were actually able to make it onto the field.

While we were there (and the kids were running around), I noticed that while the home team's on-deck circle had a huge M-State logo in it, the Visitor's on-deck circle had the initials GB on it. Anyone have any idea what that's about?

Several things would have been different. Rick Ray would not be our coach. I firmly believe that a rising mid level star would be here such as Gross or Marshall. Would that be better, who knows. The coaching search was poorly handled: those who know about it really are afraid of the next big hire Stricklin has to make. We would already be talking about our baseball stadium plans and fund raising and plans would already be under way. Byrne is a leader and visionay. Stricklin is a nice guy but is a follower. If Byrne had stayed 10 years I truly believe we would be a top 25 athletic department.

The Byrne hiring and stadium yes. The Stricklin hiring search, no. I know someone involved and it was disastrous. Believe what you want, but it was an embarrassment to our school. Totally unprofessional.
