It today. He will never get another vote from me. I would urge you all who had one who voted against it to do the same. I'm a very conservative dyed in the wool Republican.

What’s funny is that you can bet that the next time there’s a baseball regional in Starkville, Hattiesburg, or Oxford, some of the “no” legislators will be there. Same with a women’s NCAA tournament game in Starkville. Same with the C-USA baseball tournament in Hattiesburg. Same with an out of state corporation opening up a plant in their district. They need to be reminded that if they would’ve had their way, it wouldn’t have happened. Don’t let them forget. They don’t get a pass on this.

Our state senator in central Hattiesburg voted against. Granted, this district also includes backwoods areas, but that's no excuse. I'll write in Bugs Bunny in 2023 if that's what it takes.

Which one? Roll tide Johnson or Hotty Toddy Fillengane?

I thought he meant Johnson.

I don’t think Fillingane ever attended Ole Miss. We were in some classes together at Southern Miss.

I’m disappointed he voted against it but I’m not surprised either.

I’m in that boat. Both my senator and rep voted against and it’s frustrating as hell. I’m tired of the mindset that it’s somehow acceptable to sacrifice the future on the altar of the past.

I’d be kind of split on this. I figure what the republicans did was chose exactly who they needed to get 2/3 and let the remainder vote no. Probably half the senate that voted no are in their first term and would struggle a lot more in the next election if they’d voted yes. A couple of them had very close primaries this time (almost 50/50 split). They’d basically be guaranteed to lose in the next election if they voted yes.

So at the end of the day - I’d guess the party selected whoever had the best chances to get re-elected to vote yes (or anyone who plans to retire), and then had everyone else vote no to appease their voters - whether they personally wanted to support changing the flag or not. I don’t really think the debate all week was whether or not to change - I think it was determining who could vote yes & get re-elected, and who was most at risk of being voted out. Just typical politics.

Mine is in no danger of losing.

Gotcha. The one's I'd looked at were Chism, McLendon, Sparks, Suber, Sojourner... maybe another one I'm missing. Didn't look at the house.

The much more realistic view of what happened is it really was that close. They flipped every senator they possibly could to the right side, and the ones who voted no are just the most die hard racists that couldn't be flipped.

Hah!

No.

Juan Barnett is African-American and was the mayor of my hometown before he was elected to the state senate.

That’s not accurate. I didn’t agree with his vote but saying McLendon is a racist is not a fair characterization.

So does legislature not publish this somewhere? The only place to see it is a screen capture of a cell phone picture of a piece of paper?

As a legislative body, they did their part.... both houses were controlled by Democrats from 1876 - 2010 if my memory is correct...so before you place blame on Republicans on the flag being over Mississippi so long, the Democrats could have easily changed it over time....vote your heart next election, but time to move forward...

Interesting that 6 nays from yesterday turned into yeas today. Can’t say I understand that logic.

They can play both sides of the fence. They can tell the racists in their district they tried to keep it from every coming to a vote, and then tell the reasonable people in their district they voted for the change.
