My source says......

Since another poster has already mentioned Dooley, I feel like I'm ok sharing what I was told. My source told me thisyesterdayand this afternoon that it was down to Dooley and Payne and that Stan Joneswas also being looked at but it was pretty much a two man race. Like I said with the Stansbury news, my source may be wrong but has been spot on in the past. Can/Will things change? I don't know, I'm just reporting what I was told.

Why can Stans for Dooley. When South Carolina hires Frank Martin.

I may boycott Mississippi State basketball if this is true.

That's terrible. What happened to the coaches beating our door down? Oh they never were? Exactly

a choice of assistants from 2 of the top 5 programs in America cant be a bad thing...especially when you hear Payne is bringing someone from the Spurs with him and WWW

He's rated as one of the top assistant coaches and top recruiters in the country. He also has head coaching experience, and while his 57-52 record at East Carolina isn't mind-blowing, East Carolina is a terrible program and he is the only coach to have a winning record at that school in the last FIFTY YEARS!!! I think he would be a solid hire if we got him, kind of in the mold of Mullen, also an assistant coach with a national championship ring. But Mullen didn't have head coaching experience, and Dooley does.

I'm starting to realize how high the stakes are for Stricklin. Of course, I hope it works out. We've done well in the past bringing in JWS, Mullen, and even Croom brought some positives at first. We're not as used to changing basketball coaches. It's pretty damn scary, imo. If I was Stricklin, I'd be in a constant state of worry. Of course, they don't pay big bucks for the easy jobs.

It is Dooley's job if he wants it . Payne is only a fallback, no other coach is even on the rader at this point.

Did we even try to talk to Gregg Marshall or Steve Prohm or John Groce?????

Did we interview any top head coaches????

Joe Dooley was on the bottom of my list.

I'd rather have Sean Woods than Joe Dooley.

You seem to have an overinflated opinion of what the MSU basketball program is, so maybe this coaching search will slap you back to reality. MSU is a tough job. Everyone thinks so. Hell, every time Andy Katz mentions our coaching search, he talks about how tough the job is. We are not going to be able to hire a top flight "hot:" coach like Marshall or Smart. They are holding out for real prime jobs. Hell, Smart said no to Illinois, which is about 100 times the job MSU is. We are going to have to go the route of a top assistant coach like a Dooley, who by all accounts is a great coach and recruiter. I'm sure Stricklin reached out to Marshall and Smart, and I'm also sure they immediately told him "No thanks." I think Dooley would be a solid hire, much in the the same way Dan Mullen was a solid hire. I'm sorry you seem to think we should be getting Mark Few and Brad Stevens, because that is completely unrealistic.

You'd rather have a coach from the SWAC than a guy who is listed among the top assistant coaches and recruiters in the country? Wow. Should we have hired Tevester Anderson a couple of years ago when Jackson State went 17-1 in the SWAC? I swear we have some stupid fans. What has Woods done other than play for Kentucky and win the absolute worst league in the NCAAs? Hell, he blew a 16-point lead with 5 minutes left against a team with a losing record in the NCAA play-in game. Woods' next job should be in the Sun Belt, not the SEC. No coach should ever jump from the SWAC to the SEC, that's just absurd.

Is it the fact that he is regarded as one of the top assistant coaches and recruiters in the country? Or perhaps it is the national championship ring he wears and the possibility of getting another one this year. Perhaps it's his head coaching experience, in which he did a pretty good job at a really ****** program. Yeah, those things are really unimpressive.

Is our program so bad that even a school like Nebraska who hired Colorado State's head coach can hire a quality D1 head coach and we can't????????

If we hire Dooley, I believe Stricklin settled instead of trying to get the best.

Can we at least wait until we make a hire before we start whining? LOL on you if you think these people actually have sources with real info.

Stricklin can call anyone he wants to, but they've got to be interested in the job. And being a head coach doesn't automatically mean you're destined for greatness. Stan Heath, John Pelfrey, Darrin Horn and Dennis Felton all had head coaching experience, and they all failed and were fired in the SEC. And please, Tim Miles doesn't impress me at all. He had a mediocre team in a mediocre league that barely squeaked into the NCAA tourney and was blown out in the first round. He will be fired within 5 years at Nebraska.

And if we hire Dooley he will be fired in 3 or 4 years at State.

I truly believe we would be better off keeping Stans as opposed to settling for Joe "ears" Dooley

I'm still trying to convince myself it won't be Dooley.

other than your prejudice against assistant coaches. Buzz Williams, Matt Painter and Frank Martin were assistant coaches with past head coaching experience when they took over at Marquette, Purdue and Kansas State and they seem to be doing well. The "well he's not a head coach so he automatically will suck" line of thinking is very simpleminded. It's not like Dooley is an assistant at Texas Tech. He's the top assistant at one of the best programs in the country and is universally regarded as a great coach and recruiter. I don't see what is so bad about that.

As coach said their is a lot love for Payne and he seems like he would be good fit but I prefer Groce anyday of the week. Joe Dooley wouldn't bad either. I hope Stricklin would pick Prohm and Groce over Payne and Dooley if they wanted the job. Guess time will tell.

What southeastern connections does Dooley have?

He's from New Jersey as well, which makes him a perfect fit in Starkville right.

If you can recruit, you can recruit. Apparently you just hate Joe Dooley. Because you'd rather have a SWAC head coach and a career assistant who has been carrying Leonard Hamilton's clipboard for the past 10 years. You are a piece of work.

First I've heard of Dooley. After watching Groce tonite, I'd take him in a heart beat. I watched him closely and liked what I saw. He recruited very well at Ohio State but my only concern would be his inroards to recruiting the South.
