I don’t even know what’s considered “essential” anymore. I know very few people that aren’t coming into work at some capacity at this point.

If your job hasn’t asked you back yet, you are definitely not essential.

I'm not taking any vaccine that's been rushed through in a matter of months for something I personally have a 98% chance to survive. The Marine Corps already pumped too much ish in my body as it is. Not gonna be a guinea pig for this. But more power to the rest of y'all.

Firstly, thank you for your service. This country is greater because of the bravery of people like yourself. You have every right to be cautious. Full disclosure, I am a cancer researcher and I work as a project manager for clinical trials in cancer in Phase 1 first-in-human studies. The announcement this week regarding a vaccine being 90% effective is extremely extremely premature. Basically, it is a company claiming themselves regarding the success of their vaccine. This is NOT the end of the process. They could be telling the truth, or they could also be stretching the truth. That being said, the vaccine wasn't developed willy nilly. Over 40,000 people took part in this trial alone. It is truth that it was done much more quickly due to need but I assure you the safety of patients was first and foremost. Believe or not, as a researcher, we spend 0 minutes and 0 seconds discussing the political implications of a drug. At least at my level. Livelihood of patients comes first. So, like you, I wouldn't take a vaccine right now, unless I gave my consent in a trial or until, this is the key part, it is FDA approved. FDA approval only occurs after an independent audit by the FDA along with a number of other agencies and auditors who review every single document and decision in the clinical trial and make an independent decision outside of the developer that the data proves that this vaccine is 1. safe for humans, 2. efficacious and does not cause additional harm. I know this because I have prepared, internally audited, and sat through numerous FDA audits as required by job at both a site where research happens as well as pharma companies. So essentially, you are correct that we should not all accept a vaccine today, but I do encourage you to follow the approval process for any covid-19 vaccine. After a thorough audit and review process, I would be more comfortable taking this drug. If anyone has any clinical trial process related questions don't hesitate to PM me. Remember being skeptical is excellent, thats how science happens. Not accepting the colloquial answer to a question and searching for a better answer. That's also how medical research works!

Thanks for this info. I know you spend zero time thinking about the politics of this, but since the FDA gives final approval and the FDA reports to the Secretary of Heath and Human Services Secretary, who is appointed by the President, isn’t this where politics COULD come into play? I’m not pointing fingers at the current or future President or the Secretary of HHS, but asking generally about where drug development and politics/government intersect.

Did you not live during the time when basically everything was closed but essential stuff?
Yes but that was months ago before we knew anything about covid. Basically everything and everyone is back to work so when the OP says the “essential” workers should get the vaccine first I guess that just means everyone.

Health care workers, first responders, law enforcement, workers involved with food production and distribution, workers that manufacture medical equipment and pharmaceuticals, workers that support water distribution and waste water treatment, and the military. These are the folks that will go first.

I’ll take pretty much any drug.

Said me 27 years ago.
I'm much more willing now than when I was younger. I guess I just have less to lose. In health class I was always told that drug dealers would give you drugs to get you hooked. Now that I want them, I can't find those guys.I'm so cheap now I'd love to hit some free LSD and then go use some coupons.

This was NEVER meant as a political thread. I posted it as a 'tongue in cheek' prioritization of Wildcat Basketball over even my own family. Like most things these days, it was misinterpreted, and relegated to a political argument. Stupid of me to expect otherwise.

I’m not interested in being one of the first ones to get it. I’ll wait for the fully tested and tried updated version.

- Health workers including nursing homes first
- Emergency workers - EMT/fire/poolice
- Teachers
- military
- older non-confined

Remember when Purdue told everyone oxycontin wasn't addictive and they produced the studies themselves

How many shares did Pfizer CEO sell last week

I can't even imagine the kind of poison that's gonna be passed off as a vaccine in the third world. Like those poor people haven't suffered enough

1.3 million dead from it, hundreds of thousands of others with extended hospital stays and lord knows how many thousands of others who are suffering medium and long term conditions even after having COVID out of their system. And not to mention the hefty hospital bills many Americans are faced with, can’t say any other country because I’m not going to pretend I know the healthcare systems every country has.

Would bet Dollars to donuts the power drunk politicians and bureaucrats are going to do everything they can to force you to take it. Not by actual force but by trying to make it mandatory to participate in society go to the store go to a ballgame etc

Were I a medical insurer, anyone who doesn't take it by a certain date, say 12.31.22, won't be covered for it. Your choice.
