Offense:

1. Russell looked much like he did last year. He has the arm and the accuracy, it is just a matter of timing and awareness. Had a few passes that were just beautiful (and had to be, because we werent getting open much in the 1st quarter - which leads me to point 2)

2. I much prefer the 2nd WR group of Morrow/Lewis/R. Johnson/B. Hill to Arceto/Bumphis/C. Smith/M. Green. It looks like Tubby is our best offensive weapon and one of the only WR that can get open on his own. He ran some nice routes and looked good catching the ball. Looks much improved as an all around player this year. Arceto still has great hands and deserves to be in the rotation, but nobody from that first group was getting open. The passes Russell completed to those guys, just like last year, were precision passes to a covered receiver. I have always liked Hill and he looks like a really solid option at TE. Shows great hands, good athleticism and really good route running. I think he is better all around than Green.

3. Looks like we will roll with the hot hand at RB. Perkins/Robinson/Milton all looked good in that order. I dont think Griffin really got a fair shake - he didnt get the lanes Milton did.. I still think he will be a factor. Milton did show great vision and is a smooth runner. I swear it looked like he was just jogging on that long touchdown run. Robinson is our best power/speed combo. If we can open up holes for these guys, they will make things happen.

4. Hard to tell since we didnt leave the whole group in together very long, but it looks like the starting line of Clausell/Jackson/Day/Smith/Siddoway, will be improved over last year. Day is going to be as good as any center we have had in recent memory. I didnt see anything special out of Robinson/Beckwith/Malone. Injuries will be tough to overcome just like last year.

5. We didnt see the explosive pass plays we saw in our last couple openers. Would have liked to see us hit a big one, but it just didnt come. I will say that Morrow did shake loose deep a couple of times and he will be a threat there.

6. Really hard to apply anything we saw here to next week's game. I will use the most overused word of the weekend: vanilla.

Defense and ST

1. At this point I can't see a marked improvement over last year, but the potential is definitely there.

2. Autry showed that he will be very disruptive. Looked strong, quick and explosive. He is going to get his share this year. Man, have we put some good weight on Jon Harris and Preston Smith. They came in looking like WR and look huge now. That said, I didnt see anything spectacular from them, just solid work. Boyd looked like he always does, steady but still trying to be a consistent guest in the backfield. I still think our ideal line is Autry/Jones/Boyd/Eulls...and I think he has the size to play tackle, but I prefer how we use Eulls as a run-anchor DE. When we start dialing it up, the havoc being caused by Autry will show up even more. That nasty sack by Matt Wells was thanks in large part to Autry gashing the right side of their line.

3. Rookies: Quay Evans is a playmaker. He may quickly become the locked in #2 behind PJ, assuming he is unsuspended soon. He is one of those rare penetrating DTs that just has a knack for getting upfield. Nick James got double teamed a LOT and I think he faired ok. His conditioning is obviously an issue. No less obvious was our staff using this game as extra conditioning for him. I swear he was looking to the staff praying they would take him out on a couple of drives but they just left him in there to play - and man was he gassed. At least he knew that he better not ask for a sub. Cedric Jiles is going to be a star. I was surprised to see Ryan Brown out there, but he looks like he is in the same mold as McCardell.

4. Put your hands together for the inevitable soft middle zone of a Mississippi State defense. Broomfield needs to get on board quick. I asked early why we didnt see Arrington in the 2nd group, as I was convinced he would be a star for us early on. When he played I thought he looked really good in run support. Couldnt tell that much in the passing game. I will say that he has an uncanny ability to lock on to the ball carrier and never miss the tackle. He takes great angles to the ball. I hope we end up with Broomfield at nickel safety and someone else stepping up to play opposite Nickoe. My vote would be Arrington or MATTHEW 17ing WELLS, who I still believe should be a safety. He looked great out there by the way.

5. Continuing that theme, the linebackers looked really stiff in pass coverage. Cam got beat on a TD and was generally chasing on pass plays all night. Looked pretty good against the run. Then again, we were so base all night that it really made their jobs and the safeties' jobs a lot harder. Skinner and McKinney are horses. McKinney actually made at least one really good play in pass coverage.

6. Banks/Slay look like they could contend for best corner combo in the SEC.

Special teams, outside of punting, still a concern. I really cant believe we havent settled on a kicker yet. And of course we still cant get it in the endzone consistently. I am surprised we play Banks on kickoff coverage. That is just an unnecessary risk.

I still dont know how the Auburn game will shake out. All our answers will come from Week 2.

Like you, I'm wondering why Wells isn't at safety. And I also agree Arrington needs to be in there with Whitley. Although as you said, we really didn't see much from him in pass coverage. And Nick Griffin.....,I just hope he's not another David Fair/Robert Elliot....but it looks that way so far.

Good post. I'll add my thoughts as well.

I'm not going to beat around the bush: I thought we looked like ****. I know we basically played the whole team and were really vanilla, but if we don't improve a bunch this week, there are going to be a whole bunch of State fans who feel like idiots for talking so much crap about beating Auburn.

Offense

1) Russell was accurate as always. When given time to throw, he can put the ball on the money. However, Auburn's DEs were the one bright spot for their defense against Clemson, and they could have sacked Boyd a bunch if he wasn't so mobile. Russell is going to have to get rid of the ball much quicker, or else he is going to get broken in half or turn the ball over too much. He still seems to be thinking too much back there. Dak looked like a freshman. He has the ability, but he has a long ways to go as a passer.

2) We're going to be fine at RB, assuming we can provide them with any running room. Like Coach, I think Robinson is our best ball carrier. Milton looked solid as well. Perkins is Perkins, but I don't like him running up the middle against any SEC teams. Griffin never had any running room, which is a huge concern, so it isn't really possible to judge him.

3) The OL scared the hell out of me before the game, and I'm even more worried now. We looked decent when Tobias and Gabe were in, but heaven help us if Justin Malone has to play significant minutes. JSU's tub of lard, Jonathan Billups, was getting entirely too much pressure up the middle. Clausell appears to be improved, but he still got driven back when the DE bullrushed a few more times than I would have preferred. Siddoway got beat several times by LeBeau, who was pretty damn impressive for a SWAC DE. That dude may make an NFL roster as a rush linebacker.

4) Our WRs still cannot get any separation, although they caught the ball well. Like Azzurri, I prefer our second WR unit to the first. Tubby makes things happen, and Morrow is simply more talented than the other guys. Hill was impressive. I think some of our WRs problems have to do with our scheme. We simply aren't good at getting guys open. We have a solid unit here with some depth, but they are going to struggle once again to get open against decent defenses. I'd like to see Heavens and Ricco get a chance to stretch the field a little bit, because they're both faster than Bumphis and Clark.

Defense

1) It is really, really weird Virges, who has been penciled in as a starter since the spring didn't play. I know what Mullen said, but I'm not buying that. Maybe we just didn't want to show Auburn whatever package we run with him in there he brings to the table. For our DL to be as good as we hope it will, we're going to need Virges and P.J. to play a big role.

2) Autry looked solid. He'll be our best pass rusher. Boyd is Boyd. We know what we're getting there. I prefer Eulls at DE, and I think we're going to need him there to keep Auburn from getting to the corner. Quay is going to be a beast. He is explosive. Nick seemed to just standing around half the time, but he is really out-of-shape. Smith really looks the part, but I don't expect him to do anything spectacular. I still don't like Devin Jones in there.

3) We're loaded at LB. Cam, our leading tackler last year, probably looked worse than anyone else we played there. He still looks lost in space/translation. Wells was all over the damn place, and I loved how we use him and Skinner to blitz off the edge in passing situations. They can really help our pass rush. Hughes is fast. McKinney will be gone before his senior season. He's a freak.

4) Didn't really seem much from our safties. They could be a problem early. We're good at CB. Slay will probably end up getting drafted, Love will provide a boost when he comes back, and Jiles is going to be a star.

ST

1) Nothing to be impressed with. Not having our kicker situations settled heading into what is probably going to be a low-scoring game is worrisome. Perkins doesn't need to be returning anything.

As of right now, I don't see us beating Auburn. There OL looked better than I expected it to, and Tre Mason is awesome. Frazier isn't going to scare anyone, though. If we can protect Russell we can win, but I think they sack Russell five or so times. Our OL is going to kill us in every game we play.

.....but a couple of bones to pick on them...

We didn't show much blitzing because Mullen stated before...and after the game that he wants to see the front 4 get pressure on the QB. There is "work" to be done to achieve that goal....

MSU, like so many other teams are looking for that kicker who can kick off very high and to the goal line, because we "want" them to try and return it to pin them deeper that the 25 which is where the ball is now placed after touchbacks. The average starting point for teams last year was around the 26 or 27 yard line due to not being able to kick the ball out of the end zone. Now kicking it out of the end zone essentially the same field position. No biggie as long as the guys can get down there under the kick and make a dang tackle.

Now to one negative that glares: We still don't seem to have the depth needed to win every week in the SEC. Not only should our second units be able to dominate a SWAC school, some of out 3rd teamers should be beter than their starters. JSU had a 93 yard drive against mostly first teamers and had they been able to catch the ball, they probably would have been very close to us in offensive stats.

I remarked several times that I was hoping we were intentionally trying to hit the 1 yard line with our kickoffs, I just couldn't be sure.

Agree on the defense. I am just hoping we were playing down to our competition.

I dont care to see anything else out of Heavens or Ricco. As Columbus Dawg pointed out to me earlier, the best set we could put on the field right now is probably Arceto/Tubby/Morrow/Hill. That should be our starting 3WR group. Bumphis should get heavy rotation and be the other slot receiver in 4WR sets. I like Chris Smith, I really do, and I value that he probably has some chemistry with Russell that others dont - but I just dont think he brings any gamebreaking ability to the table. When have we seen Smith running away from a secondary?

I love to read these threads. You guys could do a thirty minute diatribe of Santa Clause yearly speach of "Ho HO Ho, Merry Christmas".
