My thoughts on Dylan Favre after seeing him play for the first time.

Somebody's going to wind up with a pretty damn good QB that nobody else wanted and I hope it's us. I thought his stats were inflated because he played in a bad district and didn't face any competition. But he's for real. He looked like a smaller version of his uncle out there. Strong arm, excellent touch on his passes, good runner, tough, and prone to throwing the ball up for grabs sometimes. It also impressed me that at 5'10" 190lb he also played linebacker on defense. He only had 16 tackles and 1 pick on defense to go with his 360 yards passing and 90 yards rushing.

And for everybody who keeps bringing up the Tyson Lee comparisons, please quit embarrassing yourselves. There is no comparison. There's just not.

See how that worked out. I think we are talking to him and he is definetly on our radar, but are going to check out some other options first.

Not to mention, his uncle probably threw no more than 50 passes in his entire HS career and played on some terrible teams. My guess is we're waiting on Brunetti and if we don't get him, I wouldn't be surprised to see us offer Favre.

First of all, I trust your judgement on this. And I will say that I can see where Favre would be better than Tyson Lee just because Tyson did not have a very strong arm and he made a LOT of stupid mistakes but was given a pass by and large for whatever reason by a lot of people, and I could see where Favre would be better than Lee in that area.

That said, as good as he may be, he is too short to play QB in the SEC. I think he will probably end up at Delta State or a Sun Belt school and do well. Or, he may walk-on somewhere like MSU or USM.

..Dylan Favre play in person, but MSU has been just down the road where a QB under 6 ft. tried to get the job done.

Relf, Newton & Russell are, as far as height, where we need to be right now.

Dylan Favre sounds like a good fit for Southern Miss or Delta State, but I think the MSU fanbase is pretty worn out over watching little men try to play QB for the maroon & white.

And listed at 5'10" in HS = 5'7" in reality. Period. The only reason to sign Midget Favre is if Uncle Brett says he'll donate a large wad of cash to the school he signs with. But he should never see the field, unless we're letting him run the victory formation.

Just because someone puts up ridiculous stats in high school or JUCO doesn't mean they will project well to D-1 especially SEC level D-1....There is a reason big schools aren't beating on his door

from what I could find on scout. Favre may be too small for the SEC, but I'd take him over Lee any day. Although I don't see him being any better than the guys we got now (Russell & Stegall).

<span style="font-style: italic;">2007: Completed 201-of-323 passes (.622) for 2,308 yards and 12 touchdowns...His passing yardage was third-best nationally (230.8 yards per game)...Named first-team, all-America by the National Junior College Athletic Association</span> <br style="font-style: italic;"> <br style="font-style: italic;"> <span style="font-style: italic;">2006: Completed 169-of-248 passes (.681) for 2,124 yards, 19 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.</span>

High completion percentage, but not many yards or touchdowns relative to the number of passes he threw (at least in his SOPH season for the TDs). I never saw Lee play in HS or JUCO, but I know for a fact he never had anywhere the arm strength or the touch on the ball that Favre has already. I'm not saying we should drop Brunetti for Favre, but if we don't sign Brunetti, I think Favre would be a pretty good backup plan. The height is definitely an issue, but there have been plenty of short QBs that have done well. The main reason Lee sucked was because he sucked, not just because he was short.

Rick says he stood next to him and he thinks he's 5'11". Now Rick is a huge homer and oftentimes defends the indefensible (Crxxm for one), but I don't think he's a liar. The consensus of everyone who's ever posted on this board claiming to have stood next to Tyson Lee is that 5'8" would be generous. So Favre's got a good 3 inches on Lee, not to mention that at 17, he still may grow another inch or two.

that was under six feet tall that did well was Doug Flutie. I think he is the exception rather than the rule. And even he was a journeyman who got benched I don't know how many times.

There is a reason for that above the high school/JUCO level.

You want a tall QB so that he can see over the line, find his receivers, and then you add in the fact that a bigger person is likely to be more durable- see Mike Henig- are all reasons why you want a taller QB.

Look at how bad our offense was hamstrung just by Lee's size alone. Think about the time when he got stopped on the goal line by LSU when had he been even six feet tall he probably gets in.

My ideal QB is a guy who is 6'5" and 225. Or roughly the size of Tyler Russell. I can accept a guy that is Kevin Fant's size at a minimum- about 6 feet tall and no lighter than 180. Anyone under that is walk-on bait as far as I'm concerned.

I have nothing against Dylan Favre at all, but we can't assume that he is going to grow either and I think we could spend a scholarship on someone that could help us out more. I want to buy Favre, but I just can't.

And just off the top of my head I can think of Eric Zeier, who was right at 6 feet. Also, Doug Flutie was one of the best college QBs ever. We're not talking about pro careers here.

but in our offense, where we want our quarterback to carry the ball 10-15 times a game, bigger is better.

and he weighs 225 and Zeir is listed at 6'1" on google. Like I said, six feet is my minimum height for a QB at MSU- I probably should have clarified that- both are at that height. And both are taller than Dylan Favre.

He's probably more suited for a Texas Tech type spread than an MSU type spread. We don't truly spread the field all that much, or at least we didn't this year. However, at 5'11" , 190 now (I'm taking Rick Cleveland's word that he's a legitimate 5'11") he could easily grow into 6'0", 210-220 in 2-3 years which would be big enough for our offense.

<span style="font-weight: bold;">"Yes, he did throw three interceptions."

</span>I am aware of the passing yards but he still threw THREE pics in a single game. As well as Favre did, I am not sure this helps Cleveland's argument<span style="font-weight: bold;">.

when you look at recruits from now to play QB under Mullen, they need to look like tall RB's that can pass</p>

That's what he did on 2 of the picks. The other was just a terrible pass (really all 3 were because the other 2 should have been thrown out of bounds).

over 1200 yards rushing to go with his 5500+ yards passing. A lot of RBs would be happy to have that many yards rushing.

so he will not be walking on somewhere if push comes to shove. He is #3 on our HS QB list and #1 (brunetti) and #2 (mason) do not look too promising at this point.

all accounts indicate he wants an offer from MSU.</p>

but i think he is worth a gamble if we get Newton. If we have Newton, Russell, Relf, and Stegall for the next 2 years, we have some wiggle room to take a gamble. He would be fighting for a backup job, or at best the 2'nd QB in a two QB system (and that would be ONLY if he panned out). I know we don't have a lot of roster spots for project QBs, but I think the MS record holder with the last name Favre is worth a small gamble. If we needed a starting QB for next year, then obviously it would be stupid to offer him.</p>

beggars can't be choosers mode. We definitely need to sign at least one QB this year. If we get Newton then I don't think signing a HS QB is even necessary this year given we would have 4 QBs on the roster next year and none of them Seniors. However, if we can't sign Newton, Brunetti or Mason then Favre may be our best option. Heck, I don't even know another highly rated HS or JUCO QB we are in on.

from an USM person in my office, Fedora called him on friday night and offered.

At this point, with the way our QB recruiting is going, I wouldn't be pissed if we offered. I also wouldn't be pissed if we offered Witt Haggard from Lamar.

doubt Dylan is a great player and could possibly do some great things playing at the right level but the SEC is as close to the NFL as it gets and 5 feet 9 QB is not going to get it. You can't see over the offensive of defensive lineman and a great number of your passes will get deflected so you must be in a roll out situation to be effective and defenses can adjust to that pretty quickly.

Let's say Johnie Cooks had a nephew who was undersized but had just performed better than any defensive end in MS high school football history. Think we'd have waited until 2 months before signing day to offer him?

If we do not sign a HS QB this year, we should sign Chandler Rogers of Brookhaven Academy. They were 15-0 this year and won state (over the guy from Lamar) and he threw from 51 TD's as a junior. He's also 6'3" and 185 lbs.
