My wife is flying into Chicago. What's the better airline?

Maybe it’s just me but any domestic flight under 4/5 hours I’m flying Spirit for $150 or less. Sometimes I’ll even go up to 6 hours if I can acquire a Xanax.

Can’t beat a round trip $72 Spirit flight to Vegas. Not letting the cost of flight take away from my debauchery funds.

Delta is the best airline. Maybe not the cheapest but definitely the most reliable.

United is probably going to have more flights than anyone else going into O’Hare at least.

I flew United a few months back. Just bought the "basic economy" ticket. I rarely fly United because it has always sucked and flies to the armpit airports of hell that I try to avoid like the plague (Denver, Houston, and Chicago.)

So United Basic Economy is Spirit. No option for a carry on. You must gate check for $65. No seat selection. They crammed the seats in worse than any airline I recall. I wrangled a refund (bought insurance from Hotels.com in case I had an employee get me arrested in a prostitution ring in Houston) on the return flight.

Flew Delta basic economy back home and they treated me like I was King Jaffe Joffer of Zamunda. Rose petals on the aisle type stuff.

Alaska, Delta, and American are all I will ever fly again. I was Southwest A preferred and even got a companion pass one year. They suck balls now too. American actually got better over the last 10 years at some point and is pretty accommodating, but Alaska and Delta are top shelf IMO.

If any of you fly out West, do yourself a favor and avoid Denver. It's the most over crowded airport around these days. Weather is bad (lots of nasty thunderstorms in the spring and summer and of course winter storms) and delays are plentiful. Too many people for that airport. It's mostly connections so when weather is bad everyone is delayed and there is nowhere to sit. It's a sardine can at times.

Flying into Chicago......make sure she is packing body armor, mace and stun gun, and tell her to keep her head down at all times!
Good grief is she going alone?
Prayers for your wife's safety!

American or United?
They're both fine. I fly all of the major three and Delta consistently ranks above all of them but even they can end up upside down sometimes....

ETA: you can actually look up on time statistics for the exact flight she is going to fly for every airline and make that determination from there.

She will be with friends for a pampered chef conference.

Southwest to Midway is what I normally fly. It’s way easier to navigate than Ohare.
I used to go several times a year. Drove over to Birmingham, direct on Southwest to Midway, cheap and quick. Just don’t get out of your rental car on Southside.

So many people are terrified of places for no reason. How do you guys go through life with the piss running down your leg?
I know Chicago has had some of its violence pop up in touristy areas since I have been there, but when I went there precovid, it felt like the safest place I've ever been. The only place we came across that was sketchy was the L stop near where the blackhawks play. Not sure if that's consistently sketchy or not, but other than that, I think I could have walked around holding a wad of $100 bills visible in my hand and been fine. Even at 2am, there were always people around and they generally seemed to be more affluent than we were. Not a fair comparison since it was post-COVID, but Chicago felt much cleaner and nicer than Manhattan, although Manhattan felt safe too, if a little dirty in Midtown and lower manhattan

Flown into both airports. Midway is MUCH easier and quicker. Fly Southwest into Midway if you can.

My last few trips on American have been without incident or complication. Delta was my go to airline but they lost our luggage
both coming and going on a recent wedding trip. Mistakes happen, but it was their very poor altitude about my problem that was the killer. Bottom line, any of the majors will get you there but it's the luck of the draw if you run into a disgruntled employee.

You hear nightmares about their reliability. Have you experienced that with them?

In my employment days, American was my go-to airline. It was fastest to the west coast - Delta always had to go through Atlanta, so that was backtracking. They also had good 'upgrade to first class' stickers that they'd send on a regular basis. They've probably devolved like the rest nowadays tho.

Fly into Midway regardless of the airline. If she must fly to O’Hare, be sure to arrive earlier in the day. You don’t want to be traveling downtown during afternoon rush hour.

Southwest has been absolutely fantastic lately for those who prefer to eat lunch and dinner at an airport.
Man.. no kidding.... was supposed to land in Jacksonville at 7pm Monday night. Got there at 1am Tuesday. Nonstop delays lately.

Love how the “Chicago” dog whistle always brings out the lunatic fringe.

I have flown spirit a decent amount and have never had a bad experience. Seats are less plush but don't seem to be any less comfortable. People crack on the customers but Spirit doesn't seem to be any more or less a bus in the sky than the other non-Delta airlines. Southwest and American have been worse in my experience than Spirit. I rarely check a bag though. Not sure if that would change things.
