My wooly thoughts

A. MTSU was fun. No, it wasn't an SEC venue, and it was hardly Athens- my favorite SEC road trip- but it was charming in it's own way. One of the colder games I think I have ever been to.

B. Trip was made better because the hotel room was free after a rat wandered into our hotel room.

C. It was nice to see some decent officiating.

D. I can really see the value of Chris Relf. Sometimes Tyson seems to lose focus a little bit and I think putting Relf in therr for an occasional series or for an occasional play or two helps him to refocus a little bit without hurting the team. Our offense was really sloppy in the second half, and I think that was part of it.

E. AD is a beast. All of the people that ***** about him, are probably going to be wishing he had a fifth year of eligibility next year. OK, so he's not Ladanian Tomlinson, and I know that he "dances too much" behind the LOS, but the fact of the matter is, he has really improved and taken his game to the next level this year. He's practically 100 yards and at least one TD guaranteed every time. And let's face it- he has put up some really good numbers behind crap for o-lines, and with people stacking 9 men in the box every time he suited up for three years. That could explain at least some of the tiptoeing.

F. I don't know how much the talent of the other team had to do with this, but I'm at least a little bit optomistic that our secondary can improve as the season goes on. I thought Maurice Langston played pretty well at one CB spot, and then what else can you say about Corey Broomfield and Johnathan Banks? They both played really well against a passing team. Then Charles Mitchell had a good game as well.

G. I look forward to seeing what Dan has cooked up for our team every week. This week it was finally Bumphis in the wildcat, which didn't work out as well as I thought it would. Maybe Dan knows something I don't after all. Nonetheless, it was good to see that he tried. Derek Pegues is crying somewhere. And on ST, the fake where Elliott kept the ball- that was cool.

I thought before the season started that AD had the potential for a breakout year. He spent 3 years running behind an crappy OL against a stacked defensive front. And now the OL was going to have better coaching and the defense was going to be spread out.

What special teams fake? Now I consumed a record amount of Maker's Mark during the game so there is a good chance I missed it.

Leon took the kick and started running upfield and Elliott came around and Leon handed it off to him for a reverse. Elliott and his lightning speed galloped for about 5 yards before he was caught by every defender on the field.

had the ball, and kind of hung out and Berry went ahead like he had the ball, and everyone went after Leon, and then Elliott snuck around the other side and took it out to the 30.

Saw that. At first I was look - COOL, then I was like who is that slow #*%^. Then I was like - damn that's next year's most experienced RB.

The play definitely raised an eyebrow until Elliott took all the life out of it. I'm giving him a pass because of the ACL tear but damn he looks so out of place on the field when the ball is in his hands.

Our offense was sloppy but Mullen definitely slowed down the play calling and went probably the most conservative he will go all season on offense today. We weren't trying to achieve much except one thing we haven't been able to do and that is close out a game without turnovers. That was a victory in its own. And yes we miss Chris Relf. Hoping he gets out of the doghouse soon.

Broomfield and Banks finding the ball was great especially being freshmen. The bad thing is the only way we are getting picks is when the quarterback misses his reciever by 5-10 yards which is a huge favor for our defensive backs because they struggle so bad to cover and keep up with their man. Our d-backs still spend too much time trying to find the reciever when the ball is in the air instead of being in position to break up a pass. If that quarterback is putting the ball on the money we won't be making those interceptions needless to say.

The wildcat might be something we are going to dig into more as this season winds down. It was very interesting nonetheless and maybe we just wanted to get Bumphis a feel for it tonight but didn't want to exploit it.

Besides sloppy play on offense the only thing that was a major letdown on that side of the ball I thought today was our offensive line. They did not play as well as they have been this season. Who knows I'll just say the cold weather affected everyones play to a point today.

E. I've said that for 3 years now. Hard to run when everyone in the 17ing stadium knows you're getting the ball.

G. Absolutely. Crxxms vastly underutilized DP. It pains me to imagine him on Mullen's team. And let's add Omarr Conner & Jerious Norwood to this list. *sigh, grumble, sigh*

This game was the perfect set up for a let down game. We were coming off 3 close losses, and were on the road at a Sun belt school. The results were what I had feared, we came out flat, and played sloppy most of the game on offense. We played awful on the OL, which contributed to our sloppiness. A win is a win though, and it was much need. We are due for an upset, not saying its going to happen Saturday, but I have feeling that we will be as jacked up as we have been all year Saturday night. No doubt in my mind Mullen wants this game.

C. It was nice to see some decent officiating.
Other than the official review of the punt that allegedly went off a State guy's foot, I agree that it was a nicely officiated game.

Every time I find myself getting frustrated at the offense, I have to remind myself that neither Lee nor Relf would even smell the field anywhere else in the SEC. For some reason, that helps me calm down and normally I keep from getting irritated at them because I guess it's not their faults that we've had such a lazy recruiter for 5 years. I agree that the occasional change of pace helps our offense right now, though.
F. I don't know how much the talent of the other team had to do with this, but I'm at least a little bit optomistic that our secondary can improve as the season goes on.
I'm not extremely optimistic about this season, but I am VERY optimistic that our secondary will be vastly improved next year. The fact that we have a couple true freshmen back there tells you all you need to know about the lack of depth and quality of personnel that has been there. If we can get a couple JUCO guys to come in, I think that the secondary problem will be quickly fixed next season.

Their guy was able to get around our guy and turn the return inside, as he was supposed to. If we made that bock around the 24, Elliot would have had corner and gone a long way.

Having SEC officials, instead of ACC or CFO West, will do that for you.

Two years ago, I saw my first ACC football game. On my way home from the MSU-Auburn game, I caught the Georgia Tech-Boston College game in Atlanta. I have not ranted against SEC officials ever since. Sure, they miss calls. They're human. But none are so egregious as what you will see from other conferences.

SEC officials truly are the best in the nation.
