School gets money they have to use for gifts. Kids get to pick said gifts. Rings.
We were 2nd place in a game between two teams. And 39 other teams finished 2nd in the same manner. Salutatorian gets a medal because they finished 2nd out of the entire student body.
Same with the Olympics or swim meets & track and field in HS…1st, 2nd & 3rd all get medals or ribbons. Everyone else gets jack shite.
I understand that. And Johnny Nose Picker absolutely loves the trophy he won for his team going 0-12 and coming in last place. Especially since his neighbor Tommy who's team went 12-0 in the same league got the exact same trophy.
The point with the Cats is…don't give them the option. You want to let the players pick the gift? Fine. Just don't make a ring one of the options. Only have that as an option if you WIN the bowl game.

I got a kick-*** high school class ring -- gold, big *** emerald (birthstone), baseball on one side basketball on the other, cool beveling around the bottom of it. I mean it was pimp as hell and DAF.
