you have set next to on a plane.

I have no one but thought it would be a good one to throw around.

sit between an Ole Miss professor and a LSU PhD student on a "flight" from Denver to Memphis that was very interesting. Apparently the professor once worked at LSU and knew several of the student's professors so I just kind of listened in all the way out to the runway. That is when we attempted to take-off. The plane got about 20 feet off the ground and was hit with a hard gust of wind from the side. The plane rocked and the pilot put it back down and blew all of the tires on the landing gear stopping us before the end of the runway. Had to sit there about 15 minutes while the response team did their thing checking everything. I was fascinated but half of the people were horrified. This was around 2002 so people were still very skeptical on planes.

DL 191 went down near the runway at DFW during a thunderstorm in 1985. Dude was a high school student at the time. Members of his family were killed.

He told me this while we were sitting on the tarmac waiting to push off. At DFW. On a f'n delta flight. During stormy weather conditions.

I sat amongst an Arena league football team. Sat next to a receiver and we talked football and football players, college and pro.

On another flight I sat next to a soldier coming home from Afghanistan. I was the first American civilian he'd spent any time with in a bout a year. He as full of stories and glad to talk to somebody.

GTR to ATL on an EMB 120. He was very quiet but told me he was on his way to the McDonald's All-American game. Funny thing is he was so tall that neither he nor I could get our tray tables down for the in-flight snack. Another guy I was traveling with offered him the solo exit row seat (very good legroom on those planes) but Travis turned him down. <div>
</div><div>Edit:</div><div>I'll actually say Outlaw was not the most interesting person, just most famous. Most interesting was a guy I sat next to on a CVG to BOS flight. He was an archaeologist and his daughter was going to some school in Boston. He was telling me about his work and was brushing up on Arabic for a trip to Malaysia (mostly Muslim country). I wondered what a lifestyle like that would be like.</div>

1. Some foreign guy who had the aisle seat and pointed out to me that the cockpit door was open as we were headed down the runway in our takeoff roll in Memphis on Sept. 10th, 2001.

2. Some hot chick wearing a spagetti strap tank-top. I was enjoying the show before the turbulence put me to sleep. I stayed awake longer than usual when the turbulence started. Usually I'm out like a light after the 3rd bounce. The nice part was offset and the mood totally ruined because some fat ***** to my left had a baby that shat all over itself just as the show was getting started and changed the diaper right there in the seat. So, it was either puke all over the hot chick or lean over to her side and let the turbulence put me to sleep and I breathed through my mouth.

3. Didn't sit next to him or anywhere around him but Goldberg was front row, aisle seat of first class the last time I flew out of San Diego. Even though there are always marines and sailors on those flights, I knew nothing was gonna get past Goldberg.

ETA:The sad ending in bold.

wasn't the only thing bouncing either. lol I could have been a Sixpack hero except for the disgusting monster to my left! I still should have slipped the phone out and taken a picture but I was afraid the oxygen mask were about to fall down. It was that bad. I'm sure the stench woke her up. I remember thinking "God I hope she opens her eyes and realizes that isn't me!"

Starr was on a flight from Bham to Atlanta and then on to Green Bay.Verypersonable. Great guy even tho he is a bama alum. Scheck was from Atl to Dallas. Sat in rear of plane with me, obviously very unhappy about not getting a FC upgrade and basically said hello and that was it for an hr and 45 min.Brando---I immediately told Brando I was a State fan, this was back in maybe 2003, 04 during the Stansbury/Gottfried wars and he had said something about a week or so earlier that lead me to think he was very pro-uat/Gottfried. Left the plane with different opinion. Still a vdefry arrogant *** to a degree. L Hamilton was from Philadelphia to Chicago and then her on to LA. She was about 10-15 yrs older but very hot and very friendly for a celebrity.

..there are good non-sports topics for summer, but this is not one of them.

Rule of Thumb #1 for summer non-sports topics:

Do not start a threat that baits the pathological liars.

Before this thread ends, we'll have people swearing they sat by Charles Mason, Jimmy Hoffa & Bigfoot.

On a flight back from Amsterdam to Newark in December of 1999 I was seated next to an Arabian guy who bore an uncanny resemblance to Mohammed Atta. It's a pretty long flight so inevitably I engaged him in a little conversation. We talked a little about travelling and University (I was completing a study abroad Semester in Holland). He spoke of living in Afghanistan, which didn't seem odd at the time and living in Russia. And his studying in Hamburg. We didn't talk a whole lot because he was sort of odd and stand-offish. For instance he said he was a photographer but when I asked him about what type of camera he liked he couldn't really name what type camera he preferred. I just chalked it up to him being some weird Arab/German guy in a black leather jacket. I donned the head phones and enjoyed much of the rest of the flight listening to music.Toward the end of the flight he started intently asking me about how to get connecting flights and how long it took to fly to Los Angeles since that was his next destination.<div>Ever since 9/11 I've always contended I shared a flight with Mohammed Atta. The picture of him from the news 100% matches my recollection. I've seldom thought about calling the FBI to see if they are aware of any pre-9/11 flights he may have taken. I still have my flight info and ticket in case I ever get the nerve to do it. Although I really don't think I want to know.</div><div>
</div><div>(Of course if there is some Arabian guy out there telling stories of sitting next to a fat guy from Mississippi in 1999, I'm sorry I tell people you were Mohammed Atta.)

On a flight from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh, circa 2002. He talked a lot about how they practice by putting themselves in harnesses and rigs over nets before doing stunts "naked". Also talked about how they teach them to crash, by relaxing. He said you do more damage by tensing up than by, and I'm paraphrasing, letting yourself relax and "flop" around.<div>
</div><div>Not necessarily interesting, but kinda' scary; On a flight from Denver to Atlantashortly after 9/11,I sat next to an obviously Muslim woman that kept dialing and checking her cell phone while taxiing for takeoff AFTER all cell phones were supposed to be off. I told her if she didn't turn it off I was going to get the flight attendant and she didn't understand me, or pretended not to. I called the flight attendant and he did NOTHING. Before I could get another flight attendant they were told to be seated for takeoff. After we got in the air and BEFORE the fasten seat belt sign was off, she called the same flight attendant over that had previously done NOTHING and asked him a question. I couldn't understand her, but I guess he did because she got up, took a prayer rug out of her carry on, spread it out next to the exit door and started praying. Me and the guy across the aisle from me were making plans to tackle her if she reached for her cell phone, the exit door handle (not that it would open in flight), or made any other suspicious moves. I realize now that she was probably checking her cell phone for a call to prayer, but at the time I didn't and wouldn't have cared anyway. Anyway, it was pretty scary and, I think, very inappropriate considering the events that had recently taken place on 9/11. BTW, I was pulled out of the boarding line before that flight for a random search and she was not.</div><div>

Tim Brando wasn't in a plane, or at an airport. Sat next to us in a restaurant. My son (about 2 at the time) was looking over the booth behind us jabbering to someone. The guy was talking back to him and the women at the table were oohing and aahing over how cute he was. The guy was talking about him being a ladies man (or something to that effect). I turned around and saw him and thought he looked familiar. Maybe someone from my home town i thought (we were on vacation). Took me a while to figure out who he was. I was 90% sure who he was when our waiter began talking to him about his radio show. Bingo, that's who it was. Really nice guy. His family was nice too. They were parked next to us also. Some crappy looking van. Good to see someone famous not in a Bentley. Gotta respect people like that.

Also saw a guy a few people in front of me in line in the airport. I thought to myself that guy looks like Shaggy. I mentioned this to my wife. When I did the guy directly in front of me turned around and looked at me kind of funny. When he turned back around I noticed he had a big bundle of back stage passes clipped on his backpack. The guy I thought was Shaggy went through the line and was met by some girls wanting to take pictures. Bingo, Shaggy.

growing up in Savannah, GA, I played little league football for the Southside Raiders and our uniforms were exactly like the Oakland Raiders...they were our favorite team for me and all my team mates...when Kenny walked on the airplane from Mobile to Memphis, I just knew he was sitting next to me and he did...we talked all the way to Memphis, mostly about the Raiders...I had no desire to know anything about UAT.

Oscar Goodman.

I didn't really know a thing about him, but I was on a flight from Vegas to Reno and the guy I was with pointed him out. I wouldn't have known him otherwise.

I did remember him from the movie casino.

Very nice guy. Pretty good mayor by all accounts as well.

Could not have been a nicer man and we talked baseball for 2 hours. Told me Harmon Killebrew was so strong he could twist the cover of a baseball, TonyGwynn had the best swing he ever saw, Eddie Stanky was the most brilliant baseball man he ever knew, Whitey Herzog the greatest manager of people, Bob Veale threw a baseballharder than any man who ever lived, Frank Robinson was the toughest hitter he faced in the 60's,and that Rickey Henderson was the strangest person he ever met in big league baseball.

And he still lamented that something went wrong with his elbow at Fenway Park in late September, 1967 when the Red Sox won. He was rolling ina game on Saturdaythe last weekend of the season and something popped and he had to leave the game. Had won 7 or 8 straight games and was in top form. Said the Twins, not the Sox, would have won the pennant that year if that hadn't happened. Tried to pitch through it but it was like a knife in his elbow.

And Kaat was about 55 I'd guess at the time, and he was 6 foot 5 and still had hands and forearms that would put Popeye to shame. What a great ride that was.

Nobody famous. Downtown Julie Brown at the height of her MTV gig was on the same plane. She was wearing some weird ****.

I did fly solo from ATL to GTR. Only passenger on the plane. Flight attendant did her pre-flight safety speech. Then she told me snacks are here and drinks here help yourself. If you need anything holler and then she sat down and snoozed for most of the flight.

I grew up a Celtics fan and sat next to Cedric Maxwell on a plane to Charlotte. It was my first encounter with someone that was that famous and important to me. I invited him to the foodshow I was working the next day and he said he would come. Well, he sure as **** showed up with his wife, brought me an autographed picture and a team signed ball. I left him with an icechest full of all the 12-14 lightly dusted shrimp I had in the booth! Sorry to the customers that were shortchaged that day. I had no choice. It was a childhood LEGEND!!

Steven Covey was very cool because I just thought he was an interesting person that I learned a lot from until half way through the flight, when he got up to use the restroom, another passenger tapped me on the shoulder and said, you do know that's Steven Covey don't you? I was pretty impressed because our company had just gone through the 7-habits training, and it was just before he released the 8th habit.

Sat next to Dampier once and behind him another time. Cool dude, but not the most exciting person to just talk to.

I was on a flight with Laura Bush the other day. Couldn't get anywhere near her. That was the most security I had ever seen for one person. On right before take off - Off as soon as we land. in and out the little side door there on the jetway with SS car pulled up to the stairs.

Saw Chumlee sitting by himself at the little checkerboard tables by the windows at LAX (maybe OC?). Didn't stop to say hi, but it did suprise me and I thought later that it would have been cool to just say hello.

Although it was in the security check line and not a flight on the way back from the Cincy Master's tournament. Super nice guy and very engaging.

Also was on a flight with a guy wearing a World Ice Golf Champsionship polo - I intentionally sought him out at Baggage Claim to ask him about it. He had played it a few years earlier and was a pretty cool story to hear.

And once sat next to a produce for MTV that was doing a show on superfans and had been doing work on the Ozzie Ozborne episode. Very interesting stories there.

Was on a 50-seat small diameter fuselage jet from Huntsville to Washington once, with the window seat. It was bad enough because I had to bend my head slightly to the side under normal circumstances. I'd been there a few minutes and a guy who must've weighed 500 lbs got on. I remember thinking, "I sure hope he doesn't sit by me!". But, alas, he did. First thing he did was raise the center armrest and then flop down ... taking up over half my seat. Thankfully the flight was short, but you can imagine the contortions I had to go through ... butt raised against the outside corner of my seat, head cocked at about 45 degrees ... pretty miserable. They should've made him buy two tickets. And there were no spare seats.<div>
</div><div>I guess the most interesting was when I got the seat next to Senator Sparkman. And it was in the back of the bus. No first class for him. Interesting fellow.</div><div>
</div><div>Had another incident where I was in the aisle seat and some chick gets on, stops at my seat, and starts yelling that I'd gotten her seat. I checked my boarding pass, and sure enough I was in the right seat. But so was she ... they'd double-booked the seat. She was literally yelling, so the stewardess asked if I'd like another seat. So she put me in first class. Just one of the "empowered" females ....</div><div>
</div><div>And on a flight to Florida once the stewardess dumped a cup of coffee in my lap ... right in the "private" area. She commenced to wipe me down with a napkin. I didn't mind at all ....</div>

from Phoenix to Nashville. Very nice guy. We talked about flying as he was studying to get his instrument rating. It wasnt until we landed i told him i was a fan of his music.<div>
</div><div>Although that's pretty cool, as much as I fly i wouldve thought I would have more stories of interesting people. This is the only one that's even close.</div>
