It's not so much that as the fact that your fans
genuinely believe you're on the cusp of greatness, and a lot of that
belief stems from your position relative to ours, which is about as bad
as it has been historically.
Mullen has been the epitome of mediocre. I'll give him that he's won
the games against the weak opponents, but he hasn't done much else, and
this year appears to be by far his best recruiting class since the one
Croom put together for him in 2009, and honestly any coach that can walk
and chew gum should be able to take advantage of the situation he had
with this year's class to put a decent class together.
I've said before that Mullen doesn't scare me. Sure he's won 3 Egg
Bowls, primarily by running about 5 offensive plays against a DC that
didn't know how to stop them for 3 years. Outside of Egg Bowls though,
his offense has been mediocre with a few glimpses of being better. He's
a mediocre recruiter who either doesn't understand the game or just
isn't that great in the living room. His best quality so far, in my
opinion, has been his ability to find and hire good assistants.
That's an important quality, but I've said before and I'll say again
that I don't think Mullen will take you to much more than 7 or 8 win
regular seasons while at MSU. That's including 4-0 in OOC just about
every year with your OOC scheduling (which I wish we would do by the
way). Compared to State's history, that'll be a good run, but it's not
something that we can't catch, even competing with you in-state.
We've thought many times we were going to be able to leave you in our
dust. It hasn't happened yet, and you won't leave us either. If you
didn't leave us behind in the 70s, and we didn't leave you behind in the
00s, it isn't happening. There will be an ebb and flow. You enjoy the
high times, as you should, but don't get too carried away, because the
fall isn't very fun.
