Still thinking. That's right, there isn't one. Oh yeah, I forgot about disc golf. That is all that needs to be said about Stansbury. He has consistently kept us competitive with the top programs in the country. I would give my left nut to be able to play the top 10 teams in the nation to within a touchdown with a chance to win in the 4th quarter. For any of his faults, he at least gives us a chance against the big boys.

You started by saying that State has been top-6 in the SEC in basketball over the last 50 years. Including what we've done since '96 shows we might've been top 6 in the last 15 years (most of which have been with Stansbury as head coach), not the last 50.

That was more of an anomaly than an indication that we've been some SEC powerhouse throughout the years. The fact is other than that one 6-year period and the 20 years since Stansbury arrived on campus, we've probably been the WORST basketball program in the SEC, with the possible exception of Mississippi.</p>

Which completely blows MSU's .432 overall winning percentage out of the water. In fact, Stans hasn't had even one season as low as .432.<div>
</div><div>Compare Stansbury's .650 winning percentage to the programs of the SEC in patdog's list, and Stans would be 2nd, behind Kentucky, and way ahead of #3 Alabama (.577). </div>

was that we've been good since Stansbury has been here (the previous 50 years before today). I thought your point was that we were good the 50 yearsbefore Stansbury got here, and that Stansbury has simply kept us at approximately the same level.

If you're trying to prove we've beenabove averagesince Stansbury got to State, then your facts support this, and I apologize for misinterpreting, but I'm really not sure why you're arguing that based on all the anti-Stansbury stuff you post. If you're trying to prove that Stansbury has kept us about where we were before he got here, then you should exclude what we did before he got here.

ETA: The original post was about how we were good the last 14 years, and your rebuttal was that we've been good the previous 50 years, which is why I assumed you meant the 50 years prior to the last 14. Apparently that's my mistake. Sorry.

I like Stans but the naysayers are correct that we haven't made the plays late in games to beat the top teams we have played. Duke, Memphis, Kentucky. We had shots to win all of those games and others. However, the fact that we are there with that shot puts Stans on the level of coaches just below the elite. When he starts winning those games, then he gets on the level with Pitino, Caliperi, etc. What is frustrating is to be right on the edge and not break through. I can't even address the posts that say that Stans doesn't know the game of basketball or that he can't coach and can only recruit. That's just silly. The problem with the Fire Stans crowd is that they don;'t seem to give a **** that this is a move that plunges us from the almost elite to the mediocre. 2nd place does suck, but what sucks more than anything is a team and program that can't even compete for top prizes. If you need to remember how bad that sucks, recall early football at the beginning of the previous decade and in the late 1980's. When a team lines up and does whatever it wants and you have no chance to make a play to stop them, man, that is what sucks more than heartbreak losses.

We've
held the nation's highest winning percentage in two separate seasons.
Only two other SEC teams have ever claimed the nations highest winning
percentage: Kentucky (5) and Arkansas (1). We're one of only two SEC teams to have an individual player with a major game, season, or career high record (<span style="background-color: yellow;">Varnado</span> - Career blocked shots). Pistol Pete at <span style="background-color: yellow;">LSU</span> is the only other SEC Player. Only Alabama, Tennessee, <span style="background-color: yellow;">LSU</span>,
and Kentucky have won more regular season championships and only
Kentucky, Alabama, and Tennessee have won more SEC tournaments. Add to
that, we won the West more than anybody ever did. We're also one of the six SEC teams to make a Final Four appearance.

false statement.

Since Babe was fired and with the lone exception of Ron Green's one year, Stans is the ONLY basketball coach to even have a winning SEC record ... period and that goes back to '65.

I lived through an dattended most games in the Joe Dan Gold, Kermit Davis, Hatfield, Boyd, Williams eras and it wasn't until the end of Williams careerthat we EVEN approached winning SEC basketball.<font size="1" face="Arial"><font size="1" face="Arial"><p align="left">Joe Dan Gold (MSU) 5 1966-70 51 74 .408 32 56 .364

you are actually, making the case against Coach. He says we have been good for 50 years but you point out that this has ONLY been from '90 - '11. Last time I looked that was 21 years ago through last year. And, exactly "how" long has the 'recruiter' been with the program? Exactly.

After Babe left we SUCKED period, until the last .... 'bout 20 years.

you are actually, making the case against Coach. He says we have been good for 50 years but you point out that this has ONLY been from '90 - '11. Last time I looked that was 21 years ago through last year. And, exactly "how" long has the 'recruiter' been with the program? Exactly.

After Babe left we SUCKED period, until the last .... 'bout 20 years.
he has clearly showed that when looking at all the FACTS- we have been one of the better SEC programs. Nobody is disputing that the last 20 years or so have been better- we are all in agreement- but basketball didnt start at Miss State in 1990. Not to mention, Stansbury didnt recruit one starter on the 1991 SEC championship team. <div>
</div><div>If we were so terrible as you say-</div><div>
</div><div>we wouldnt be 7th in overall winning percentage all-time</div><div>we wouldnt be one of only 6 SEC schools to make a Final Four</div><div>we wouldnt be one of the top schools in SEC titles won</div><div>
</div><div>If you think we are so bad- try looking at some other school's history</div><div>

Name another program at MSU where we have been a top 6 program in the SEC for the past 14 years...

You're using stansbury's success to show how good we are to show how bad he is. What the Fu.c.k man...make up your mind. Quit using all of his wins, his "hardware" (lol, you're so damn stupid), and his tournament appearances and then try to make your case. Even your dumb *** will surely see very quickly that your argument fails to hold water. He has brought our program to a new level and all you can do is ***** about it and call for his head so you can feel Internet cool. Is there another level for our program? Sure. Will Stansbury get us there? Probably not. It's ok to admit that and say you want to find the guy that can get us there. Fine...that's acceptable. Probably a dumb move, but it's at least understandable. But, at least give the man his credit where it's due or just STFU already. You look so stupid right now.

support your argument against Stansbury. If anything, they tend to hurt your argument. No, basketball didn't start at MSU when he arrived, but it had been a pretty bad program for quite awhile. There had been some good seasons, but on the whole, the 20-30 years pre-1990 were not good. The point that's been made by others is that Stansbury did not walk into a program with a great recent history; he's been partially responsible for getting State into the top half of the SEC.

As for the fact that Stansbury didn't recruit the players on the 1991 championship, so what? Your argument seems to be that he's not a good coach, yet he was an assistant coach on that team, so deserves at least a small portion of the credit for the season, even if he didn't recruit the players. It's inconsistent to blame him for bad coaching of players he's recruited while not giving him any credit for coaching players he didn't recuit.

wtf are you talking about?<div>
</div><div>All this has been to show basketball existed before Stands got here. Nowhere in there have I said he has done a bad job overall as our head coach</div><div>
</div><div>You're level of understanding appears to be somewhere between stump and jello</div><div>

You list all of stansbury's accomplishments as evidence that our program is one of the better SEC programs. Meanwhile, you do nothing but bash the guy and call for his head in countless other threads. Seems to me the guy has you pretty well pegged.

then I've got no disagreement with you here. I just don't see what you're trying to argue in this thread. You're certainly correct that State had good years prior to the last 14 years, but that really has nothing to do with the original thread, I don't think.

The original poster seemed to be pointing out that Stansbury has gotten State to a decent overall level in basketball, and you seemed to be disagreeing with that, even when additional facts kept showing that prior to Stansbury, State had not been decent for quite some time.</p>

<span style="font-style: italic;">(and forgive the Spellcheck highlighter)</span>

The first part showed since time immemorial that we have the seventh best overall record in the SEC, belying the 'quick Google' search patdog made earlier.

I don't care about your petty beef with Coach, but just throwing some incomplete stats that **** on our basketball history to prove a point or prove somebody wrong is a level of dipshittery that I just don't abide.

The fact is that we've been on an incline since the 90's and have plateaued. Does anybody dispute that?

We are better off now than we were in the early 90's, the 80's, the 70's, late 60's, and previous to the mid-50's. Does anybody dispute that?

When you look at the complete picture, saying we have a tradition of winning that only rates better than Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina is categorically untrue. Does anybody dispute that?

In fact, if not for the rednecks that populate(d) our state in the late 50's and
early 60's keeping us from playing 'tha collards', I don't think we
would have even suffered as bad as we did during the 60's-80's. Again, saying our team smells like **** just because you don't like the person that says they smell great is retarded and self-defeating. Again, does anybody dispute that?

I mean... is there really anybody on this board that doesn't think Mississippi State is, as a basketball program, in the top half of the SEC?
