As a society, we do a really ****** job of identifying and getting people help. I always think about that dude who shot up the Waffle House in Nashville. He had more red flags than a Russian military parade, but his family and the police just kept giving him a pass.
Another one is a guy I worked with for many years, and went fishing with from time to time. He came to our retiree picnic one year, and was off the rails in that he was formerly a slow talking, laid back guy, but that day he was like a different person. He rambled on frantically, spouting stuff about the Bible and talking in a voice that sounded nothing like him. We all of laughed it off. A month later, he was in the newspaper when he was arrested for aggravated stalking. It turned out that he was arrested earlier that year for stalking, and was forced to undergo counseling. Two months after he was at the picnic, he got into an argument with his neighbor. The neighbor called the cops. He was waiting on the cops to get there, and when they did, he greeted them with 3 shells of 00 buckshot and then barricaded himself in his house before shooting and killing himself a couple of hours later. One of the cops was seriously injured and had to undergo 3 surgeries, nearly losing his leg and was laid up for awhile.
