No one who knows Mitch Barnhart believes he offered Oats. I will say there were numerous rumors last season’s end that Oats was considering the NBA and rumors that he wasn’t happy with the Alabama NIL situation. Things do change year over year.

Whether it happens this year or next, we’ll probably be looking for another coach if Pope doesn’t show some kind of progress or if he decides he cannot handle the job.
I don't get why people are trying to argue Mitch didn't offer Nat Oats. It's almost like y'all's self-confidence depends on Nate Oats not having told us no.

That's some weird stuff. He didn't offer him publicly, no. Because he would have said no. He didn't say, "Hey, Kentucky hasn't offered me, I am interested," he said, "I am not going to Kentucky."

Because Mitch Barnhart placed more importance and effort in the women’s basketball program than the men’s when searching for a coach. It’s f-ing absurd!

Why is that? Why is the women’s coach a better recruiter? Why did they beat Louisville on their own court when Pope could not?

It is strange to see some so vehemently say Oats was not contacted.
A certain number of top coaches were contacted by agents, runners about their interest level. This happens at every major program - including here.
I would be upset if the top were not contacted: Oats, Drew, Hurley, Donovan.

Just wait until Oats is at a place like Kansas, UNC or UCLA and he's competing for Final Fours every season.

We missed our chance. Mitch is a coward. His legacy is one of missed opportunities, playing it safe, and handing the mantle of top program in the nation over to Duke.

ucla won’t happen. UNC won’t either. They’re a lot like UK in that they’re snobby about their hires. Oats and UNC? Not sure that would even work. They’ll stay in house yet again with some no name.

Kansas is a real option. They’re all out to win at all costs. They will hire either Beard or Oats after Self and I’m sad to say and never thought I would, Kansas is a threat to us down the line at some point if we don’t pick it up and start acting like we care. Win at all costs? I mean yea, pretty much. I don’t want my degrees totally tarnished and the university I love ran through the mud, but this is now professional sports. Those old rules don’t apply, hire the best man for the job and let the chips fall.

Still not giving up on Mark. I still think because of the NIL there is a way to make this work. He did really good last year. It’s possible this issue was a personal thing and isn’t about Mark. Maybe a one off.

Oats was coming out of a murder investigation involving 2 players and then they threw up gun signs during intros before the body was cold. Not only was he not offered, many programs would have fired him. I’m fine offering him if this doesn’t work but no there are reasons why Barnhart wouldn’t hire him. I’m just giving you the reason not saying I wouldn’t have.

No way Barnhart offered him and even if he did, he wanted it cheap because of the buyout. Basically “with you baggage and the buyout if you want Kentucky you’ll do it for this price”. That’s max. But I don’t even think that happened.

NIL changes the timeline for rebuilds now, especially when you're looking at a $15 to 22 million dollar team each year. It's not like what it was during the Pitino years or even the Smith years, where a rebuild might have taken a few years. Now you can bring in a brand new competitive team at warp speed.

That's why I'm not okay with giving Mark 4 to 5 years if he doesn't right this ship quickly. He has until next year to make this program top 5 again. This year is year 2. Next year is year 3. At that point, we need to at least be sniffing Elite Eights again and bringing in elite recruiting hauls. I don't even think a Final Four will be necessary, but making Kentucky relevant again nationally will be (top 2 in the SEC, top 5 nationally).

I think a coach has to show a path to success as they grow a team. If that is not there, then the coach should be questioned.
The style of play needs to be defined.

Don’t be foolish. We all know how the coaching search went when BCG was hired. Mitch didn’t even try to find a decent coach then. This cycle he arrogantly assumed Scott Drew would take the job before getting cockblocked by the family and then lazily jumped on the first guy who fit his narrow view of morality and would take the job no matter what.

Why Pope over say Frank Vogel, another UK alum? Dude literally has an NBA title and is known for his elite defense. If we’re taking a chance why not a know property? It’s working out better for BYU with an NBA guy than Pope.

There is no baggage, that incident chiefly involved a guy who wasnt even a player(he was a friend of Darius Miles) having words with the young lady's boyfriend, who was clearly looking for trouble. Very little journalism and thoroughness from the police. Media witchunt and complete effort to smear the program.

This guy would kill it at UK, here's an article about him and UK last year.

Just before UConn and Purdue tipped off in the national championship on April 8, Oats and Alabama's Athletic Director, Greg Byrne, released a joint statement announcing Oats would remain in Tuscaloosa and not pursue the Kentucky job.

Oats did mention to Davis, however, that there was some consideration to making the move within the SEC.

"To be even in the conversation -- I mean, the job was never offered to me. It's not -- it didn't get to that point at all," Oats said. "But there was a lot of speculation circulating around the country for a day -- or part of a day there -- that maybe I'd be in the mix. I actually thought about it."

"I think we've got a chance to win a national championship at Alabama, and I think it would mean a lot more winning one here than maybe it would be winning one somewhere where they've won with lots of different coaches over a period of time. It's almost expected at a place like Kentucky. If you don't make the Final Four, they're gonna -- you had a disappointing year, to be honest with you. John Calipari is a pretty good coach. He's won a lot of games. He's won everywhere he's been, and they weren't happy. I mean, he won a national championship. But you expect a Final Four -- which I don't mind. I wouldn't mind having that pressure, to be honest with you. I just think there's part of me that would actually enjoy that to a point because I put a lot of pressure on myself, anyways.

This guy would dominate here. Why he was never offered I have no idea. He has no title and is hungry for one. Already made the final four. 5 SEC titles, 2 elite 8s. How was this not the hire last spring?

Something about a divorce and/or kids.

But honestly, it wasn't something that couldn’t have been worked out with any serious program. I go back to Alabama football. Do you think that would stop them from hiring possibly the best coach in the SEC? Let's be real here. Mitch Barnhart is an aberration.

Why Nate Oats. That guy went 16-15 in his first year with returning players. In his 7th year and no titles. 147–64 at Bama. Got beat by Purdue this year at home.
Would that get it here? Cmon.

If we had Oats, the goalposts would just shift. We would be angry about defense just like we are with Pope. And when we lose, we would say we need even MORE one and dones, talent. Then, if we got that and lose, we would say we need more older players and dominate the portal. We can’t get out of our own way as a fanbase. The path requires patience and none of us have it, me included.

You just slurp up that LOD drool. You go on thinking nonsense. Go sit in your pumpkin patch and be really sincere. He ain’t coming. One huge reason…there is no job to come to. Poor baby. It will be ok.
“Go sit in the pumpkin patch and be really sincere” made me chuckle🤷‍♂️😂😂😂

Not sold on Oats. He can’t win the big games. Too reliant on the 3 and doesn’t seem to have an answer how to run traditional offense inside the 3 point line. His bigs want to hang out on the perimeter too much.

My order was:
Pearl
Oats
Hurley

Didn't really have any others on my want list.
That’s what it should’ve been . Mitch d**ed around with cal doing the stupid tv interview or whatever and was 3 wks late made pope not be able to recruit and his team last year wasn’t great came back from 15-20 pts all the time . Did the bare minimum of a sweet 16 . This year will be much worse will be lucky to make the tournament as of the way the teams looking. Much better last yr significantly worse this season

Oats with Kentucky resources would be the most dangerous combination in college basketball.

People keep forgetting that Alabama doesn't have our level of NIL for hoops. It's close, but not on the same level. Give Oats access to our boosters and fan support, and he'd crush it here. Anyone arguing differently is naive and hasn't been paying attention.

Let's just call it for what it is. Mitch bringing in Pope was a scared move. He didn't want to be rejected, and he knew Pope would say yes.

It's the kind of move that will set the program back. We'll have four losses by Christmas, maybe even more, and the Pope apologists will blame it on injuries, despite the depth that they were hailing as vintage great during the summer.

Good to hear from you SOS , I’m still alive … l 😂 but we keep keeping our arse handed to us I might not show up here at all , football isn’t relevant, basketball is 🫤. I’ll start caring a lot more when our players do the same .. I’m looking at you OO . And a couple others .. I wish BG had my hoops smarts .. it would be a huge increase .

Scared move? Are you serious? Mitch cowering in the corner signing a napkin maybe.

Only thing scared here are coaches that don't want to put up with the unrelenting slavering, gut rending crap slinging bashing that the lunatic fringe of the KY fanbase hurls at the last four coaches. Oats laughed. UConn guy laughed. Others laughed. Pope stood up. Bottom line is we got what you guys asked for. A three jacking offense and a bunch of poor little rich boy players. Benny boy paradise.

'Bama was exposed last night, losing to a solid Gonzaga team by 10 in Vegas. Shut down the 3s and they look weak. The Gonzaga defense was impressive.
