Clearly a step in the wrong direction for us this weekend. Still very much in the Top 8 mix but we’ll be sweating it out a bit now.
Not really worth discussing Arkansas, Texas, Vandy, and now Tennessee. They’re pretty clearly ahead of us in the pecking order and probably your Top 4 seeds if the season ended today.
Most likely you’ll have at least one national seed from the Pac-12. That’s probably Arizona as of today, could end up being Oregon or Stanford. Notre Dame will probably be in the Top 8 too as the presumed ACC champ.
So you’ve basically got two spots up for grabs and several teams in the mix: MSU, TCU, Texas Tech, ECU, Oregon, Stanford, Florida.
Here would be my biggest concern: Florida. I have a strong feeling the SEC isn’t getting more than four Top 8 seeds, and that has been indicated by national writers as well. As previously mentioned, Arkansas/Vandy/Tennessee appear to be locks at this point. So I don’t think both MSU and Florida will be in the Top 8.
A week or two ago the resume comparison was very lopsided in our favor, but now it’s much closer. They’ve been red hot, are up to 16 in the RPI, and have actually passed us in the conference standings. We still have an edge in the metrics but the gap has shrunk considerably. They close with Arkansas in Fayetteville, meaning their RPI should only move up win or lose. Here’s the other interesting thing, as it currently looks, Florida and MSU are probably going to be your 4 and 5 seeds in Hoover, meaning there’s a good chance we play each other. Are any potential games going to be significant for national seed purposes? They very would could.
For now, we absolutely must win two in Tuscaloosa next weekend. It would actually be a nice boost for our RPI too, Bama is sitting at 24 currently. Win that series and you probably make up a good bit of the ground you lost in the RPI this weekend. But lose the series and it may all but sink your Top 8 chances.
