This low viewership seems appropriate based on who was playing--no one cared.

Pretty ironic.

"Can't have Dayton be all #16 seeds. Nobody wants to watch that crap. The tournament is about entertainment."

So maybe we shouldn't even include these lower conferences at all.
Since all that matter is ratings.

It frustrates me to no end that the natty for football and hoops start at 9-930pm on Monday nights.

Try a little harder for no one to watch why don't you.

Why can't they do Fri night/Sun afternoon?

Every other tournament decision is made based on entertainment #1 - why not the championship game schedule as well.

These things are obviously predicated on teams and matchups, but I have such a counterintuitive view of it. Last year, with Kansas and UNC, I hardly gave it a look and could not have cared less who won. Not interesting or novel in either case ... but both are national brands, so...

I loved this tournament and the Final Four. UConn was the only real basketball brand name, and even it was completing a return from a ten-year exile. So much more interesting to me than the same old, same old.

Would have had higher viewership if FAU had made it into the final -- the general public loves a Cinderella story.

Also, the fact that UConn took a commanding lead in the 1st half sunk any chance of higher ratings.

You must have loved Gonzaga/Baylor! I did. Even though I don't particularly like Gonzaga

Not really surprising for the men's ratings. Casual fans are more attracted to big name programs. UConn has some cache in Basketball but SDSU probably did not attract too many TV eyeballs.
Agree about SDSU and UConn was re-building their cache this year.

Women’s numbers up, men’s down.

Not really that hard for women's numbers to be up. Low bar.
I'm still waiting to walk into a bar and see a women's game on any of the TVs. I still get mocked by friends when I even bring up women's basketball. And it's almost impossible for me to find takers for the free tickets I often get for RU women's home games.

I had it on but didn’t watch constantly since I figured a blowout win for UConn

I should have bet on it, what was the spread something like seven points ?

Timing has nothing to do with it. It was a brutal four teams

Casual sports fans are enamored with brand names. Men’s final four didn’t have them this year. Late night viewing is not the explanation for the viewership drop.

You'd think, but that one didn't do much for me. Hard to say why other than I can't stand Baylor and I'm kind of sick of Gonzaga.

Can't stand Baylor? Scott Drew is a great story.
I'm sick of Gonzaga too it was just great to have those two schools in the final

how is 9:30 too late? do you guys need baby sleep?? according to many everyone works from home anyway.
Yes, when you get up at 5:00 am for work, 9:30 is too late. It's also too late for young kids who have school. There's plenty of money being paid and made, so how about not being greedy hogs and maybe take slightly less so kids don't have to stay up until midnight to watch the game?

Yeah, kids were in bed right as it was starting. If you're trying to build the fan base by attracting younger viewers, late weeknight games aren't going to cut it. Nearly 50% of the US population is in the eastern time zone.

Lame tournament after round 2, no good teams, weak final four, totally forgettable final and winner. And late start time was absolutely a factor

I would assume you are retired and newly 75 if you graduated RU in ‘66… Not all of us can take five naps a day for four weeks straight to make up the lost sleep time after a casino binge.

Yes… The younger generations (some of us) actually work and are early risers to compete in the competitive marketplace we are employed in.
