Nebraska best state to view Total Eclipse

August 21, 2017, the total eclipse of the sun will travel through the entire state of Nebraska including Lincoln at approx 1:03 pm, central time. Huge crowds are expected for the event which hasn't occured in the US for over 30 years.

Memorial Stadium would be a great place to view this special event! It would be cool if the coaches could use this as a symbol of resurrgence to totally eclipse the competition!

Remember vividly the disappointing eclipse of 1979. Got dragged out into the parking lot of my elementary school to stare into these crappy pinhole cameras we had made for the event. Even as a young child I remember thinking whoppee-freeking-doo about it. Seriously. It gets a little darker for two minutes, and you still can't look at the sun. Not to rain on anybody's excitement, but I just don't get it.

My brother from the west coast skipped a family reunion, and a cousin's wedding, so he could instead sit in a field for two minutes.

I remember that as well, same experience, pinhole cameras that showed the sun with a small wedge out of the side.

However that particular eclipse was a partial (very) solar eclipse...this one will be a total solar eclipse, truly a once in a lifetime event. I cannot wait, goes through my hometown of Scottsbluff, I'll be traveling from Denver to see it. I just hope we have the typically clear August bluebird morning skies on that day!

I remember it too, but we were far outside the path of totality for that one. The path of totality just went through the Northwest. Even then, I do remember it getting dark enough for the streetlights to come on. This one we are right in the path of totality(at least in Lincoln where I am), so it will get dark like night for a couple of minutes. I've heard that the temperature will drop about 10 degrees too.

was in 8th grade for the '79 letdown. just got kinda shady out as I remember. pinhole viewers sucked. much better looking at it thru our classmate's brother's welding mask.

Actually the best spot to view the totality of the Eclipse is in western Kentucky, but many areas will have great views of the event.

Funny you say that. My parents work at a local museum/tourist attraction in SE Nebraska and one day some lady came in asking about the eclipse. They told her about how SE Nebraska was in the path of the eclipse, where it was best to see it and when it was. She looked at her calendar and had a pissed off look on her face. She looked up at them and said, "But, that's a Monday. Why would they ever schedule this on a Monday? Why not a Saturday when more people are off of work?". My dad said he had to turn and walk away because he was trying to hold back his laughter.

Western Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming are the best areas to view the eclipse. Other areas have a greater chance of cloudy skies (Oregon, etc), and it's easier to move down the freeway if needed. A total solar eclipse is a very different phenomenon from a partial eclipse, which is why states in the path will see a massive influx of visitors. Totality is 2 minutes, but from the beginning of the initial partial eclipse to the end of the eclipse it will be about 3 hours.

I just got back from spending 2 weeks back in Omaha and I went to Runza's quite a few times! I also stopped at the Runza's in Valentine and bought 2 for my trip home! Nothing like a Runza to make you think about Nebraska!
