Nebraska makes major impression on fast-rising EDGE
Nebraska hosted numerous top recruits over the weekend, and one is a very intriguing athlete who left high on the Huskers.
Feel bad for the recruiting guys who got into this business 20 years ago when it was booming. They are all probably in their 40s and 50s and are watching NIL and the transfer portal ruin their sport.![]()
You still ain’t getting my $$!!!!
It was a sketchy investment of our money and our time discussing & studying these recruits even back then. Now that it's half as relevant as it used to be with NIL, then divide that by half because of the instant quit & transfer BS, there's really not much of a point to investing much in any of this.Feel bad for the recruiting guys who got into this business 20 years ago when it was booming. At least with politics I feel like I might learn something...none of these kids are winning anything at Nebraska in the year 2030. And based on our transfer portal this year, I wouldn't be surprised if Rhule is spending on high school kids and then he can come back and say "but we have a great 27 class", and they will only play for Matt Rhule. I guess if you feel you can't get the portal kids, this is next best thing and he can always say...but, but, but we are the youngest team in the big 10.It was a sketchy investment of our money and our time discussing & studying these recruits even back then. Just like those who insist on bringing up politics. Everyone is already dug in. Nobody is going to change. There's no point and it's all just a waste of time.
It is crazy how it changed almost overnight for those recruiting dorks.Feel bad for the recruiting guys who got into this business 20 years ago when it was booming. They are all probably in their 40s and 50s and are watching NIL and the transfer portal ruin their sport.
NIL/portal is another variable to add as far as assembling a team. It puts a stronger premium on evaluation. Production high fliers are going to demand a bigger price for their services and a dozen or so teams with NIL dough are going to compete for their services. The other teams are going to have to find solutions that get them a roster that will allow them to compete. Cignetti now has access to players he did not when he got to IU. But that first team was a bunch of mid-major all stars, plus a few finds from P4 portal guys. The number of former JMU players on IU's depth chart top line was huge. So Cignetti found a way. Greats coaches do that. NU needs to find the approach that will work for them.It was a sketchy investment of our money and our time discussing & studying these recruits even back then. And we haven't found that approach yet. I do think that the wrong approach is going into every NIL period thinking that you have to find transfers for every position. I applaud NU for actually believing in the RB room despite the critics.NIL/portal is another variable to add as far as assembling a team. It puts a stronger premium on evaluation. Good point on the QB. I think the system situation comes down to coaching. Hopefully we have coaches that understand the system on either side and can coach to it, make in game adjustments on the fly, and recruit to it.Next year's team may be better than 2025 simply because a different mix of portal guys fits better with the offensive and defensive plans NU coaches develop. NU has to find an approach that works for them. For example, Holgerson did nothing but sing Raiola's praises. But as talented as DR is, he isn't the type of QB that can do the things Holgerson wants from a QB at a high level. Maybe Colandrea is.
NU is in a chicken and egg situation. They have to get to a better competitive situation in the league in order to draw more top end players, but having more top end players is what gets them to the upper echelon of the league. I think NU's approach to the portal was a good one. They weren't going to get any high flying portal players on the DL just after firing the DC and DL coach after a pretty messy season of play. The LB room upgraded nicely. And they added a couple of DB guys and the competition should be good for those spots. On the OL, the kids Raiola recruited haven't panned out for the most part, but they did get some quality guys from the portal and line should be better next year. The QB room was overhauled. And we haven't found that approach yet. I do think that the wrong approach is going into every NIL period thinking that you have to find transfers for every position. I follow the NFL pretty closely. There are good teams out there who have undrafted free agents starting for them. Our staff needs to understand what they must have-- and go get that-- and what they can get by with at other positions. For instance, everyone knows that you can field a good interior offensive line with three star kids from within the 500 mile radius if you know what you are doing. No sense in recruiting coast to coast or spending a half million every year to bring in a guard.
