You have a point about the value of spring games. However, the rationale for the cancellation of these games, allegedly because it gives contents a chance to scout potential portal targets, is lame.

Spring games are important for engagement with the fanbase. Since they are typically free/cheap, they often are the first experience for many people who can grow into being more fanatical.
If they go away, I don't think the loss of the game itself is any big deal. But I would hope that schools would continue to have a spring football event where fans can attend and be excited.

I agree. I never understood why you would add a possibility of injury in games like the Big 33 and Spring games. Just seemed stupid to me. Now with the element of outside talent evaluation happening during these games, it's a no brainer. Dump 'em.
Teams in larger cities can easily cancel their spring games. No Texas football fans in Austin for the game has very little impact on the city's economics. Teams in smaller college towns like State College however, if they cancelled, would cause an uproar amongst owners of the local businesses (hotels, restaurants, bars, shops, etc.) because 60,000+ people flocking to Happy Valley for the Blue-White game is vital to the local economy. Franklin/Kraft/Bendapudi are well aware of this and thus will never cancel our spring game. Mark it down.

Although I understand the spring game is not a clear, accurate picture of what to expect in September, I really look forward to the BW game every year.
It's a long 8 months from January to August without seeing the generic whites in action, and the BW game gives me a chance to see younger players who I have only read about or seen high school highlights of don the pads and actually play football for Penn State.
I am eager to see Grunkmeyer throw to the new WRs and to see Martin and Smith run against the new DL like Wafle, Andrews, and Cook.
It will be great to see Lavar's son suited up and hunting for a tackle. I look forward to seeing what other newcomers and redshirts look like on defense.
So the game is "meaningless" as far as a valid indicator of next season's squad. It's nice to watch a game without a shred of stress that Penn State won't convert a 3rd and 2 or a 4th and goal and that the defense might give up another 3rd and 17. Regardless of those outcomes, I can rationalize either solid defense or an effective offense: a win-win for me!

Any school that doesn’t host a spring scrimmage will just hold another practice instead. Doesn’t really reduce the injury risk.
Sure it does. Players in a game atmosphere give a little extra. It's natural. A controlled scrimmage would be OK, but, why bother. Another practice makes much more sense without crowds and outside cameras.
I've always enjoyed the Blue-White game and have sat through some terrible weather (rain-shortened game) and there have also been games where the weather was picture perfect. More than anything, it provided a Penn State football and CC Peppers fix for me, but if ever the game was held primarily for the benefit of the local economy, that's a terrible reason to expose players to injury in a meaningless event.
Blue White also shows the first drunken sunburns of the semester. Nothing is more glorious than seeing a close to passed out freshman with the raccoon face burn.
