The Google machine confirms that the WWII generation were not called the greatest generation until Tom Brokaw's book by that title came out in 1998. So your claim that that title is the blame for decisions made by baby boomers has no merit.

Ok I'd like it better if they were called the greatest soldiers cause I disagree it's the greatest generation ever when all your spawn are baby boomers, you invented the nuclear bomb and segregation was normal daily life in America. Again, great soldiers maybe the greatest and I'm grateful for their tremendous sacrifices but greatest generation as a whole including everyone else that wasn't in the military not so much.

There's not many people alive today that can understand what the world went through during WWII. This is the best video I've seen that sort of puts it in perspective. Unbelievable how many people died around the entire world.

Segregation was normal day life in every nation in 1944...EVERY. I'm assuming you've at least heard of The Holocaust.

a generation that grew up in the depression, fought the last great world war, fought oppressive communism in Korea, had to shake their fist at Khrushchev during the Cold War, almost see the end of the world over two weeks because of Cuba, built the Hoover dam in the timeframe that couldn’t be repeated today, and never demanded anything or feel entitled to anything along the way. Yea.. they absolutely sucked.

The bomb? It was inevitable. We didn’t hand the instructions to the Russians.

now just for laughs... who is the greatest generation?

America’s soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen are better than they have ever been. They are the most efficient warfighters ever assembled and are equipped with weapons, equipment and technology that our predecessors could never have imagined. The American citizenry, however, has become increasingly less worth fighting for and less appreciative of the sacrifices made for them. That’s the difference between this generation and the “greatest generation”.

They didn't start naming generations till WW1. American Revolution was kinda a big deal for our country though but again I wouldn't bestow that title on any generation. All have been great.

Hey stupid ***- the Greatest Generation fought and won the fiercest war this planet has ever seen, and many of those soldiers were in public office when the civil rights act of 1964 was passed. Read a 17ing book once in a while idiot.

Thanks for soiling a thoughtful thread with your miserable schtick.

Thought is more important than speech.

That Generation provided you the opportunity for either. We all know which you chose.

Your greatest generation must also include Russia and England's generations then right since we didn't really enter the war until 1942 while Russia lost over 24 million soldiers and civilians to our 418,000. Germany doesn't lose WW2 if Hitler didn't go full retard and attack Russia or stop from invading England or spread his army ridiculously thin over an area with a square footage the size of all of Africa or doesn't freeze all his troops to death in wintery cold as 17 Russia. USA doesn't really get to take credit for saving all of Europe, North Africa and half of Asia when the ultimate reason was a psychotic moron going full retard on his army and we didn't enter the fight till 3 years into it.

Greatest soldiers only? Who do you think kept the country running with millions of men gone? Rosie the Riveter stood for millions of women who entered the work force for the first time and built the tanks that chased the desert fox across Africa, the GP's that soldiers fell in love with, and most of the ammo that thankfully was the last thing to go through many a Nazi's minds.

They then came home, cooked supper, bathed the kids and were back at it the next day.

And in case you were wondering I didn't give you a single downvote. Those great men died so that we can have our own opinions, no matter how wrong or dumb some of those opinions may be.

Also brokaw didn’t label them the greatest generation just because of WWII it was also because they had to endure the extreme austerity of the Great Depression as children only to be called upon to again to sacrifice all as young adults to save the world from tyranny which they did willingly in no doubt the single most united effort in our nations history. Then this same generation built the greatest economy in history. Certainly the combination of circumstances from birth is what molded them into greatest generation and perhaps similar circumstances would do the same for any other but it happened to them and thus they earned the title. I do not see giving them that distinction as a slight of other generations.

We are currently hitching rides with the Russians to get to the orbiting space station.

Count me in as one...

who thinks Russia was coming for Germany if Hitler didn't come for them. For example, there was one front-line airfield the Germans overran early in Barbarossa that was stacked to the gills with bombs. The Luftwaffe started using the Russian ordnance, and when they finally retreated back west in 1944, there were still Russian bombs they hadn't used.

Hitler's mistakes on that front were not driving for Moscow in the fall, and then not allowing his commanders the flexibility they needed once winter arrived.

You far left liberals get so triggered over the phrase "Make America Great Again." It's hilarious.
I guess every generation needs a participation trophy. (Your take)
Well, we can't say our guys were great, there were other countries fighting before we were. (Your take)
The tide didn't turn when America joined the war, that was purely coincidental. (Your take)
Baby boomers are screwing up the country because their parents were called the greatest generation. (Your take)

How many ****** takes can you have in one thread?

I get so tired of these myths that the Red Army fought defeated the Nazis in the East alone. It's complete revisionist history. Also, comparing number of deaths doesn't linearly measure the sacrifice of a nation. The Russians were shooting their own soldiers in the back for cowardice. Just because one country has more deaths during a war doesn't mean they should be more highly commended - maybe they just aren't very good at it. The truth is without the industrious might of the United States (Capitalism) that supplied and fed Russia through the early days of the war in the East, Moscow, Stalingrad, and Leningrad fall along with the entirety of Russia. Hell, Stalin signed a truce with Hitler, and they were deciding how to divide up Poland among Germany and Russia before Hitler broke that truce. Very noble.

US Eagle squadrons were fighting in the air over the English Channel pre official US involvement in the war, and the only reason we weren't on the western side of the continent until 1944 was because it was completely occupied by the Nazis. US and British fought their way onto the continent through North Africa, and were in Italy by 1943. Not to mention we were fighting another war on the other side of the world completely alone in the pacific. Yes- other countries played a role in the war, but the fact is that the war could not have been won without the United States. The same can't be said for Canada, Belgium or whomever else. Period. I'll end this with Churchill's quote upon hearing the news of Pearl Harbor. He knew what US involvement ultimately meant for the world.

"So, we had won after all! …We had won the war. England would live; Britain would live; the Commonwealth of Nations and the Empire would live. How long the war would last or in what fashion it would end no man could tell, nor did I at this moment care. . . . We should not be wiped out. Our history would not come to an end. We might not even have to die as individuals. Hitler’s fate was sealed. Mussolini’s fate was sealed. As for the Japanese, they would be ground to powder. All the rest was merely the proper application of overwhelming force."

That’s a little ridiculous. I am not devaluing anything contributed by anyone. I already laid out what the whole point was in my previous reply to 00dawg. And the whole post was in regards to the topic of the thread (D-day, specifically Operation Neptune), not the entirety of Operation Overlord which was obviously much larger in scope. You are correct that Overlord / Neptune would have failed without American ground force and tactical involvement. It also would have failed without British involvement or possibly without the Canadian involvement as well. Every nation contributed and sacrificed a great deal in that battle and the war as a whole. It’s kind of insulting to all involved to even try to keep score on who the “real MVP” was, which is what some people try to do.
STFU. Only a true dick would find a way to start an argument in a thread like this.

You're correct our lend lease act with Russia was a gigantic help for them to be able to defeat Germany on the Eastern front but USA nor England were ever engaged in military action on that front which is credited as being the main reason for the defeat of the Nazis.

The Eastern Front was decisive in determining the outcome in the European theatre of operations in World War II, eventually serving as the main reason for the defeat of Nazi Germany and the Axis nations

****. Facing a similar scenario today, you would never get enough men to volunteer and do what they did. You MIGHT get enough guys to fill maybe ONE wave of Higgins boats to storm towards multiple machine gun nests on a cliff. They are literally trying to ban dodgeball in schools now.

Maybe the greatest generation were actually terrible parents? If we are making the leap to banning dodgeball is a reflection of greatness of a generation, we must look at who raised the following generations and ask why they didn't do a better job with their kids? Why did they raise kids that would become such pansies? … Or maybe banning dodgeball is a weak measure of a generation and both you and I are being terribly hyperbolic.

Our founding farthers were a pretty good generation too. As were the people that explored and won the west. America has always been full of great generations.

Will you quit being a puss and blaming 2 words on whatever issues you have going on? My beef with you isn't that you are unwilling to use the words "greatest generation", that just says more about you than it does those men and women. My beef is that in not doing so and giving your explanations you are going out of your way to insinuate that that generation really wasnt even that great. And to go out of your way to die on that metaphorical hill on D-Day of all days is disturbing.

They were soldiers. They were told they were going in. They didn't have a choice. It's not like commanders are gonna call off D-day cause the soldiers said they didn't feel like going. Yes I know many of those guys voluntarily signed up for service. But I also think you're kind of shitting on our current military members, like they somehow lack the courage that those guys had. Times have changed, but I guarantee you countless men and women have behaved just as courageously in the wars since WWII. From Korea, Vietnam to our current blunders in the Middle East.

I think that's probably true, but I am concerned that the officer ranks are being afflicted with the same kind of garbage mediocrities that think they are elite that have filled a lot of our other institutions, and they are just a generation behind as far as the rot goes. No first hand knowledge of it, just seeing some of the virtue signaling that takes place and knowing that the officer ranks that are advancing are coming through universities and political influences that have managed to ruin so many of our other institutions.

Why are you acting like being triggered is a bad thing? Trump is the most triggered human to ever walk the earth. He can't go an hour without being triggered and melting on Twitter

Now I did vote for trump. You probably did too. Let's embrace his lead and celebrate being triggered and melting on social media

As the saying goes ..."I learned it from you dad. I learned it by watching you..... Presidents who are triggered have citizens who are triggered"
