Never knew that Ray Guy turned down a scholarship from Bama to play at USM.

Bama was only going to use him as a kicker and USM said he could play QB/DB as well. Dude was a hell of an all around athlete.

“If I had it to do all over again, I’d choose Southern Miss,” Guy said.
“I fell in love with Hattiesburg and USM.” He added that the 5-1 ratio
of female students to male students might also have been a consideration
in his choice.
Surely they jest. How did that happen??

Per US News the ratio is 61% female / 39% male. That's a damn good ratio.

Southern would sometimes call Ray Guy in to punt on 3rd down. He was just that good.

I heard that since Favre was unable to text pics while he was a student in Hattyburg (no cellphones in his day), he just walked around campus with his pants around his ankles. Thats how he got the nickname "gunslinger".

It wasn't 5-1, but it could have approached 3-1 because there were still a lot of teachers being produced relative to other majors then. Ray is a fixture around here now. He's always fun to talk to.

When Ray graduated from USM I believe he held the record for interceptions as a db. He also kicked a 60 yard field goal while at USM. He also threw two no hitters as a pitcher at USM. When he was with the Raiders he was their third string emergency qb. It is a disgrace he is not in the NFL hall of fame.

I started researching the longest punt in NFL history: 98 yards by Steve O'Neal in 1969. From his own 1 yd line, the ball was downed at the opponents 1 yd line. Pretty impressive. Here's a nice little read about it:

In 1972 against Ole Miss Ray kicked a 93 yard punt. He punted out of his end zone and the ball landed inside the ten and went in the end zone.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Seriously, he works as a fund-raiser for USM. Not sure if it's a full time job or part time, but he's not just a name they use to get people's attention. I've never met him but he seems like a good Eagle and he was definitely a huge stud athlete in his day. Too bad he was a little before my time. We actually had season tickets to USM games for a couple of seasons about 5-6 years after he was gone. Wish I could have seen him play.

But if you put a punter in, he would be second. You realize he is not the best punter in NFL history.

sold his superbowl rings because he was broke. Any more news on that ? My two cents: Him not being in the NFL hall of fame is a travesty .

I don't think there is ever one "best" player all-time at any position, but Ray Guy is definitely one of the best punters ever.

I did not say he wasn't one of the best, but he wasn't THE best statistically, by number of years leading the league in punting, by pro bowls, by championship appearances, or any other measure. I agree with you that it's hard, if not impossible, to say who was the best of all time, save for Jerry Rice at WR. Anyway, Guy certainly was one of the best and I think he and Jerrell Wilson are fairly well ahead of #3, but I'm not sure about that.

Especially when you're talking about statistics over a period of years. You said Guy was the 2nd best punter ever. I say there was nobody better, but there were a handful you can mention in the same group as Guy. The people that picked the 75-year team clearly thought he was the best ever. He definitely deserves to be in the HOF.

One more thing about Guy. He could have played DB for the Raiders and probably started. But Madden said he was way too valuable as a punter to risk injury.

I was being recruited by USM to play football and was invited to their football camp the summer before my senior year. While there guy came over to the camp and gave a punting clinic. Everyone got to watch it. He was a very nice guy.

Now you say he was the best, and you have no idea what you're talking about. Wilson was a pro-bowler more often, appeared in as many championship games, averaged more per punt for the career, had a similar length career, I could go on and on. I don't care what was picked in 94, it's because Ray Guy was fresh in their mind rather than a guy who played in the early 60s. I don't think Guy beats Wilson in a single statistic category, though he may in 1, but they are very close. Both deserve to be in, I'm not arguing against Guy. If you think it's an injustice that Guy is not in, and I do, then why compound it by putting him in over another just as, or more, deserving person that NO one talks about because he retired almost 20 years before Guy started playing and before widespread TV coverage.

It's not like they picked a guy who retired the year before over a guy that retired 20 years before.

Take areading comprehension class. I said there is no 1 best player. Saying there's no one better than Guy but he's in the handful that are the best isn't the same as saying he's the 1 best punter of all time. Wilson's in the same group. He's not the best punter of all time, but there's never been any better than him.

BTW, Wilson also played at USM. And yes, they both deserve to be in the HOF.

But you obviously didn't even know about Mr. Wilson and you also said "I say there was nobody better," doesn't matter what you say after that, you're saying he was the best. You can't say I think no one is better than x, though there are a handful that could be discussed as good as x and then claim you aren't saying x is the best ever because that's precisely what you did. However, Wilson was better by almost every statistic measure, period. So, he (Wilson) was better, but only by a hair. What I didn't know was that Wilson played at USM, too. My only point for posting in this post is that for those offended by Guy's absence, be offended double for Wilson, too. Neither should be discussed without the other. Both should be in and no one of them should be in without the other.

Some men were born to be great leaders. Others born to create timeless works of art. Some men were born to build empires, others to destroy them. Ray Guy was born to kick the ever-living **** out of footballs.

And where the hell did you get the idea I didn't even know who Wilson was? I SAW HIM PLAY late in his career with the Chiefs. He's equally as good as Guy. But there's no way to say that one is better than the other. Stats don't tell the whole story. For instance, there isn't an official stat for hang time that I can find. But it's very important. Also, ifKicker A hasmore kicks from inside the 50, then his average is going to be less than Kicker B's is even if they're equally good.

we lost Bo Jackson for much the same reason - he wanted to play football and baseball and we said no, just football. Turns out he would have been better off to have chosen just baseball. He would have played for twenty years and been a Hall of Famer.

But if it is, your coaches were idiots. It's one thing to losea punter because you're not recruiting him as a position player (and I have no doubt that if Bear had thought he could get on the field at DB he would have told Guy he could play both), but to lose a highly recruited RB because you won't let him play baseball is pretty incredible. Again, I highly doubt there's any truth to this.

in the nation, is choosing FSU over the Tide. He wants to play baseball too and Saban says pick one or the other.

As for the Bo scenario I laid out: he grew up 30 minutes from Tuscaloosa and was solid for Bama up to the last minute.
