...when you are evaluating a coach, you don't forget about it. Especially because it happens every. 17ing. year. If we were to win the rest of our games and end up a 2 seed, then we would've been a one without Rider and/or Richmond. In reality, the bracketology has it about right. We'll be an 8 or a 9 and lose on the first weekend again. It's unacceptable that this keeps happening. When do you stop dwelling on it? When Rick Stansbury gets past the first round of the NCAA tournament. That's when. And the first step is to get a good seed, which is still in our hands at this point, and is what everybody is pulling for. We need to win the rest of our non conference games and then we'll see where we are.

I hope Rick and the team didn't dwell on it for more than a couple of hours, but I hope they remember it to this day. As for fans, I guess that's an individual thing. I was pissed for a little while. The next couple of wins didn't do much to fix that but I wrote it off as one bad day. Then Richmond stirred it all back up again. Winning back to back games against bad teams from major conferences for some reason has me a little more optimistic, but a loss to Wright State and I'll be back to pissed again.

I would love to see this team be a 5 seed. I don't think we are capable of much more unless Riek and Sidney turn out to be game changers. To do that, I am guessing we will need to be about 27-7 on Selection Sunday. Maybe 25-9 at worst. If we end up 12-3 in the non-conference, I think we'll need at least 11 SEC wins to get that seed and be playing on Sunday in Nashville. Run the table in the non conference (13-2) and win 12 SEC games and we can probably lose on Saturday and get it. To be any higher, I think we would also need to be a top four overall team in the SEC (maybe top three) and have some GOOD wins in there (UK, UT, UF, UM, VU, maybe Bama) and be playing on Sunday.

Beyond that I want to win two games in the NCAAs. If our program is going to be taken seriously, we HAVE to do this at some point. Thirteen years is too long when you want to claim to have a good program in a major conference. The higher our seed, the better our chances. I don't think the season is a waste if we don't advance to the SS, but I think it's another bullet in the gun of those who have no faith that Rick can get us there. Are we going to be better next year without Jarvis and Barry, especially if Sidney never plays and Riek is Marcus Campbellish? Unlikely. This is our best chance for a couple of years. Besides, if we were to advance to the SS, that five-six day period from the second round to the start of the Sweet 16 would set new records on this board. More than signing day, more than Croom got fired day, more than Egg Bowl day, more than LT got canned day. It would also give every State fan the chance to dream about winning another game or (shudder) two. In 1995, that dream died a hard and fast death against UCLA. In 96, it was like walking on clouds. I want to have that five days again.
