Coach Mullen offering these guys with such unimpressive scholarship offers. You would think that a coaches ability to evaluate talent and to recognize what type of kid they want character wise would most certainly be trumped by what other schools have offered them and/or the number of stars by their name on the internet. I personally don't care how many 9+ win seasons the man has at State, if he doesn't start getting some 4 and 5 star kids that have scholarship offers from big time BCS schools then we don't need him.

In all seriousness I think there are way too many people who put way too much stock in websites that rate recruits vs. what their coach thinks of a recruit. And as far as offers are concerned, just how many kids do you think one school can properly evaluate to determine whether or not they want to offer them a scholarship? Think about thisif the top 25 programs evaluate 2000 kids each annuallyto determine who they will offer one of their 25 scholarships to then that comes to a grand total of 50,000 kids. Then let's say each school offers 200 of those they evaluated that would mean that a maximum5000of the 25,000 recieved an offerOf those 5000 a maximum of 625 players can be signed if all 25 programs needed to fill their full 25 slots in the same year.Obvioulsy even these numbers are exaggerated since mostcoaches will not personally evaluate 2000 kids nor will they offer 200 scholarships, not to mention the fact that many of these kids are being evaluated by the same schools nor does this take juco into consideration.

While considering thesethings you should ask yourself how many high school football players there are in the country. 3 or 4 million? Maybe more or maybe less, but you get my point.

Consider this, if all 119 schools evaluated 2000 kids, offered 200 and signed 25 each then what would the numbers be? A maximum of 238,000 evaluated, with 23,800 offered and2,975 actually signing a scholarship. Again we all know that these numbers are greatly exaggerated and even so it is still easy to see that less than half of the high school football players in this country are properly evaluated.

I'm not trying to say that all 2 star athletes with offers to smaller schools are as good as 5 star athletes with offers to bigger schools, but I do put at least a little bit more stock in what Mullen thinks of a player vs. a recruiting site or a coach from another school. Except for a few situations here and there I also believe it to bea total waste of time for MSU to try and pull top rated players from other states when that states home university is also actively recruiting the same players. Especially when the home school is LSU, Bama, Texas, OU, USC, ... Maybe one day this will change, but for now it is a waste of time and money. Having said that just exactly how many players would we actually be actively recruiting who do have scholarship offers from those schools? Mainly just the ones from Mississippi that those schools want plus maybe 2 or3 more each year.

So lets see, there are maybe 10 kids from Mississippi that will be actively recruited by some of the top programs in the country along with MSU, couple that with the 2 or 3 top rated out of state kids we are after and at most we are in competition with these schools for maybe 12 or 13 kids, and that's only when Mississippi is having a good year talent wise. We would be doing great if we could get half of these, and I believe this year we will get more than half but that's just my own opinion which really doesn't mean much. If we do get half then we will have a 50% success rate when competing with top schools, not bad by my estimation. Now, if we do beat them out on 50% of those players then that will be 6 out of our 25 signed recruits, therefore if this is will be your standard of judging how good we do in recruiting then you bout as well quit keeping up with it since you be largely disappointed about 75% of the time in most years.

I've got to quit now, my fingers are starting to ache.

How many BCS schools do you think even know where Port Gibson is? These are the kind of recruits that MSU needs to get to be successful. Guys like this don't always have a lot of offers because they are in the middle of no where at schools that no one knows about. Our coaches find these kids. If Mullen is offering this guy in June then he thinks he is a 4 star.

Look at J Banks for us now.... Some names Jerry Rice and Walter Payton come to mind also....

Mississippi is the most talent rich state in the county when it comes to professional athletes/per capita (very close battle with LA). Being in state, we are able to evaluate these players at small schools that the big boys cannot. I'm sure some bigger schools will now take notice and try to slip in on some of these throughout the year before signing day.

You may want to look at the offer list for Archie Manning, Brett Farve, Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Steve McNair, etc. They had very few offers and were all from small towns in the back country of Mississippi. None would have been better than a 2* under the present classification, yet all were excellent NFL players and some are still NFL record holders. People who are only interested in seeing what Steve, Yancy and the other have to say about a player are worse than idiots.

If you put a lot of these guys at Madison Central, thenBCS schools will come to calling. Too many uncut diamonds hidding in these smaller schools and if Mullen canfind them, then make something out of them, go for it.I wonder how many offers Bret Farve and Jerry Rice had on the table?

How much and why are teams like LSU, Oregon, Auburn, etc., paying people to find these types of players? Because they can't and don't know about these players in small town MS. As Mullen said, he'd rather find them himself, evaluate them with his coaches, and then offer them if they fit what he is trying to accomplish.

I dont care how remote the town is where you live.

Every year we sign quality SEC players that other schools simply don't know that much about. I don't give a **** if you believe me or not. But it happens every year.

About websites or other offers and I find that very encouraging. I've said this before, I trust the fact that the coaches know exactly what they are looking for and when they are confident in a kid they offer him. Mullen is a winner and damn well wants to keep earning the money he has worked so hard to achieve. Do you really think he would jepoardize his and his coaches future by selecting kids that can't help him be successful? I don't!

How many of them are still alive should be the question for the board. There was a lot of talent with all those guys listed. It's what you do with that talent that counts.

This is dumb. Their is not a single personthat is smarter than our coaches onhere when it comes to player evaluation and player development. Who cares about the stars just look at UM. how many 4 stars have never made it past a season or are on the bench. Now lets look at some of our 2 star. per rivals

Damein Anderson Playing time
Addison Lawrence Playing time
Chris 17ing Relf Could not trow a screen to save his life two years ago
Nick Bell If not for the tragedy I believehe would of been agreat player
Coorey Broomfield Playing
Arceto Clark Best Deep receiver last year
Sean Ferguson Playing
Devin Jones
Shane McCardell

Soif we end up with nothing but two stars GREAT!!!

If the clowns ranking players for Rivals and Scout were do damn great at talent evaluation, do you think they would be ranking players for Rivals and Scout? I dont think so.
Now, granted there are some easy kids to rank, but there are a lot more that get overlooked, which is exactly why LSU, Oregon and the like pay for information on kids (good point previous poster).

I will take a HC with two NC rings, a DC that coached at OU under Stoops and the rest of our staff's evaluations of players over the likes of Rosebowl and Yancy. Hell, there are members of the Rivals and Scoutsites that have better insight and info on players and our staff's interest than the damn MODs.

Way too many exampls of "2 star" players from remote parts of the country, Miss. included, that went on to successful college and NFL careers. We have to be successfulat identifying and signing these types because we will never put together an Alabama type class made up almost entirely of Scout and Rivals 5 and 4 star players.

i remember someone (i think todd4state) saying that mississippi baseball players take longer to develop than alabama players, simply because the coaching in Alabama is better. it also seems like we at MSU see many very raw athletes who eventually make their way into becoming good players. so for the coaches, it stands to reason that you won't find much developed talent, but you can find some good athletes that can be developed (for instance we just recently got a 3* WR that is mostly just fast, or chris relf). and if the case is poor coaching, would MSU benefit from coaching the coaches on player development?

this early in recruiting you can figure the coaches think they are a player regardless of offers. time will tell whether they are right or wrong. its LATE in the game (jan/feb) that you take a "diamond in the rough" cause you missed out on the ones you wanted. if mullen wasn't satisfied with this kid he wouldn't take the commitment this early.
