They were in contact seems like he doesn't want to leave ISU. Not saying they offered just that he was iffy about whether he would leave and how interested he was. Personally I like the guy a lot.
Yeah major programs are lining up for Franklin. Notice how he’s not a candidate for any of the top jobs and he’ll probably end up at Virginia Tech.

So, Kraft helped his buddy get a contract extension that was totally unnecessary on Nebraska's part and dumb I might add.
Campbell is an excellent coach; so is Chesney. Chesney could very well bring skilled players looking to make the jump from Group of Five to B10 ball.
They were great back in the day, but time has way passed them bye.
IMO Fran Ganter was one of if not the best OC's in PS history in his day. He was also the best RB recruiter and RB coach PS has ever had. He was called by ESPN as the brightest young coach in college football when he was OC. Then cancer happened on the coaching staff, and the rest is history. Probably shouldn't have reopened that can of worms.
Whoever gets this thing by default or however they're going to get it needs to pull a Gundy and say, "This is Penn State. This program is a man" and get tough about it instead of getting all afraid of it. Definitely by the end of his time at PSU, Franklin was scared to death of it. Even Terry Smith now puckers around in the Indiana game, but aggressively avoids a free 3 points at MSU. Time to get tough and stop the stupid.
BGJ may eventually end up at VT, but the reports over the weekend about BGJ to VT sure sounded like his agent trying to drum up interest. I do think the VT opportunity would work out much better for BGJ than the reported interest in the Arkansas job.
Don't be surprised if Matt Rhule ends up at PSU.
Patience, that takes those coaches off the board for everyone looking for a coach, a list that’s growing. We really won’t know how could a hire Kraft makes for a couple years. It’s not Krafts fault that A&M, Alabama, Notre Dame Dame and Indiana are all still in the playoff race. Personally, while perhaps a bigger risk, I would like to see him hire an up and commer.
That’s a shame, because we need a coach that can mitigate the difference in NIL, or really just coach UP the players to get maximum performance and to show the country that you can come here for NFL preparation (beyond edge, TE and RB.) We’re not poor, but we’re not among the elite either in terms of NIL. I fear big name coaches that are accustomed to big resources would come here and fail. I think there is a different skillset for head coaches between Bama or Oregon and PSU. That’s why I like Campbell so much. Too bad he doesn’t want to leave. We need somebody like him and Kraft needs to avoid big name pr splash hires and instead insert a best fit that may not be a big name. We do not need a Ryan Day or Kirby Smart type (not that they’re on any list to come here.)
You bring up a very good point about the playoff; since the 12 team format, I believe this is the first year of such high profile firings. With a 4 team playoff, many of these teams aren't still hanging around. Will be interesting to see how this plays out because for now, as long as there is a chance at the playoff, coaches are staying put (and getting paid big to do so).
I agree that he may in fact fit that same type of mold and could be great for us, but he holds a lot of risk not having any power football experience at any level. As we’ve talked about in the forum, Cignetti had decades of power football experience at various levels.
It’s just not possible. I’ve seen this comment on other forums, but people do not understand his new contract. He has a $15 million buyout currently with the new extension.
$15MM is chump change nowadays and negotiable, especially with Franklin's buyout offset. Just a heads up: don't be surprised when it happens.

So full of crap given the realities of the current professionalization of CFB with absolute and unlimited Free Agency! Absurd to fire a coach who placed in the Top 12 of 7 of the last 9 CFP Final Rankings (1 of only a handful of teams to accomplish this) and turn around and say you're going to hire a new coach for $12 mil a year with zero expectations or accountability over the next 3 years. Just an absurd position to take - if Krafts hire produces squat over his first 3 years, PSU is toast and will be relegated to long-term irrelevancy. PSU would be 4 years removed from their last National Playoff appearance and you think this new coach will be able to build an elite roster given the realities of the current CFB environment - what laughable bs! You're off your rocker if you think recruits (NIL X-fer portal or elite HS recuits) want to go play for a coach with zero track-record of consistently making the Top 12 of the CFP Rankings (i.e., making the National Playoff). Just laughable that you think Kraft should give the new $12 million a year man a free pass for 3 years after firing a coach that finished in the Top 12 of the Final CFP Rankings 7 of the last 9 seasons (one of only like 6 coaches/programs in the Nation to accomplish this). If new guy is three years out with zero success in regards to the Playoff - PSU will have relegated themselves to mediocrity at best.... and paid elite money for the mediocre results. Do tell what you do after 4 years with still irrelevant results relative to the National scene (yeah, that's going to be real attractive to elite Portal X-fers and HS Recruits) - hoping, wishing and praying is not a strategy. Kraft should be shown the door if he brings in a coach, pays him an "elite" compensation package and he produces nothing his first 3 years. Fired ignominiously just as he prescribed for a coach who accomplished what only 5 other programs did over the prior decade.
Exactly, the primary thing Mr. Krafty has done is get most of the top candidates raises and contract extensions with poison pills that lock them in. We've already heard from the geniuses top candidates and their answer was "no thanks", but thank you very much for the leverage I needed regarding my new contract - I owe you one Krafty The Clown, you're the best.

It seems to me that it is rare to get fired as head coach of a major program and immediately get hired as head coach of another major program. Typically, the sh|tcanned needs to take a step back to rebuild his reputation and give folks time to get over whatever it was that got him fired — Spend a year or two out of coaching, as a successful assistant coach, or as a successful head coach of a lesser program.

As I recall, Rhule’s buyout is a paltry $15 MM. PSU wastes that kind of money like regular people breathe air.

I have no doubt that he would be an upgrade for PSU for 2026 and beyond. Franklin had peaked with his success here and was unlikely to reach that peak again. He had unprofessionally checked out.
A fair question is Drink worth what it would take to hire him? He’s supposedly making $9M. Just because PSU may be able to spend more, should they open up the Brink’s truck on a hire there could be a question about.
I’m more inclined to go with Chesney. Would think he’d be available for a good raise with incentives making it possible to be Brink’s truck worthy if he was successful enough to make the PSU fans happy.
Different "buyouts." Fifteen million for a coach to get out of his contract with a school is up there. Might even be the highest and is probably not negotiable.
Somewhere near $25 million when all of the dust settles.
