Controversial take but Kraft has run a very tight ship on this hire - no photos of anyone visiting PSU, no families touring the town, no ADs or governors making big statements. Talking heads know very little but are acting otherwise. Good chance we’re surprised here I think.
I dont think that is controversial at all. He has run a tight ship. Technology certainly lends a hand in that. Video interviews can be done. He likely has traveled to neutral locations to meet with potential coaches. He could do a video tour of the facilities. I know they have value, but does a coach need to see all that stuff in person?

Are we hiring a football coach or a CIA operative?

It is a Pat Kraft problem, and a Chesney problem. He has a stadium to pay for on top of a football team he is hoping gets back to championship caliber fast. That takes donors and a lot of money from them.

Chesney, or whoever the coach is, would be handcuffed in the portal and recruiting. That equals 8-4, not 11-1.
If he hires a guy the Donor Class wants and it flops, the money dries up just the same, the stadium is empty, etc.

If he hires a guy who can win a lot, the money will come out, the stadium is full, etc.

He can’t let the program be held hostage, nor can Chesney pass up this chance, because wealthy donors will pout. They’ll pout anyway so you can’t make decisions based on it. Kraft will get another job if they run him out, they all do, as will Chesney. So his one mandate is to pick the best football coach he can and not pass up one candidate, not one, he thinks is better than Terry Smith because he thinks the guy will only get 20 million to use but Terry will get 23 million.

Oh yeah I forgot; multiple Big Ten and Nattys are right around the corner. The post I was responding to was about Kraft having a difficult choice but whatever floats your boat.

I personally think it’s Chesney but holding out for an Alabama loss to get DeBoer.
It's funny when ya hope for a loss to get a coach -- or is it just me?

I’m with you.
Chesney is a home run. DeBoer is a grand slam and don’t care how they get here.
I would put Chesney as a no-out solid single, good start with promise for the future. I think "home run" is reading a bit too much Cignetti into the mix. DeBoer is an inside the park home run that puts you ahead with only 1 inning to go, in other words, in a great position to win.

There is a name circulating that I won't repeat because I didn't hear it first hand so they can share it if they want that was shocking
Dan Mullen -- just a guess. No inside info, no sources, nobody texted me. Personally, not a fan.
Sonny Dykes is mentioned on the interwebs. Wasn't he a Sandy Barbour hire at Cal?

Like I said i understand those who don’t agree with that. But I was mentioning him as a person to hire way before Franklin was even fired. Always been a favorite of mine.

Crazier than that lol
Dykes is interesting
I would take Mullen over Dykes in a heartbeat. MSU is a hard place to win and he took them to 8 bowl games in 9 years. Had a couple of really good years at Florida but got run out of town for not embracing modern recruiting timelines. Apparently learned his lesson 9-2 at UNLV this year.

A true QB guru, which i think this program is in desperate need of.

I don't know what to think about Mullen--the failure at Florida is tough for me to overlook. If I was hiring at Arkansas I'd be chasing him.

I am not endorsing Smith but your argument that hiring him is insanity by doing the same thing and expecting different results. is comical. Perhaps you missed the difference in the way the team played since Franklin was fired. Several posters have been critical of promoting an assistant coach must have missed how well Smart is doing at Georgia. Do you think Penn State made a mistake by hiring an assistant coach named Paterno who, unlike Smith, never coached a game before he was promoted. Again, I am not endorsing Smith.
If you say so, Art.

This is true, and over the long haul I don't think that would be Terry Smith. He's done a great job of rallying them this season, but for the future it seems best to bring someone else in. It's really a toss up whether that is somebody like Chesney, Hartline, Drinkwitz, Brohm, etc., but you have to pick one (or maybe hope one of them picks us).
Yes, it’s easy to get guys fire up for a brief period to prove something….maintaining it long term is a whole different ball game.look at UCLA this year.

The path is clear for Kraft to hire brian kelly.

😞
Haha. Kelly would all of a sudden be seen tucking into a plate of Scrapple, drawing out his “o” sounds and telling one and all how much he loved Sheetz AND Wawa equally

Pro-Terry backers need to plant a rumor that PSU's unwillingness to hire Terry has racial overtones. Those PC wimps would then hire him for sure.
While this likely isn’t a serious suggestion, the subject has been used in the past with the current interim HC:

Paul Finebaum usually has a Bama preference within the SEC. He had a good one on his show . He said something like lsu and its law school isn’t known for producing good lawyers , So this outcome was expected . Just pay the man.

And some claim that he's not a great recruiter. 🤷‍♀️

In cutting Smith, the board was also pressured by his critics, including some parents who attribute his success to his ability to attract players to transfer from other school districts. Three marquee players on this year's team: Brenon Thrift, Aiden Howard and Ricky Rodgers all transferred into Gateway from other districts. Zanella acknowledges that there is a perception among some parents that their property taxes are paying to educate the transfer players while their own sons can no longer make the team.
