Neeli has totally offloaded the search to Pat, it's his call. Secondly, the BOT only will get involved to approve a "contract", they will not know the name, just approve a contract.

The big problem with that is that most of the players who planned to enter the portal (at least the good ones) had their people contacting other teams as soon as the games were over last Saturday, and likely will have their deals already worked out long before the portal opens.

and the coach will be announced long before January. December 9th is the latest IMO
UCLA insiders have been reporting for weeks that Chesney was waiting on where he stood in the PSU search. Chesney obviously wanted the PSU job first before taking the UCLA job.
If he was holding out, wouldn't it make sense that he just accepted at UCLA because Kraft informed him he wasnt going to get it? IMO, this signals that Kraft has the guy and he's agreed to wait to announce it. So I would think, it has to be someone playing for something of significance this week or next.

After lecturing everyone on what “off the record” means, he then went on to say PSU has a plan and there likely would not be any announcement even today. Then when peppered by comments says it’s someone with head coaching experience- but not Hartline, Meyer, DeBoer, and isn’t surprised Chesney is going to UCLA.
From the names floated that leaves Lincoln Riley (unlikely), Daboll, Heupel from Tennessee, Freeman from ND, and Sitake from BYU.

He wouldn’t be a great pick for PSU IMO. He’s from Utah and a former player and coach at BYU. He has no contacts recruiting in the northeast or mid Atlantic/ DMV regions. He’s not well known and may not bring a bunch of players with him across the country leaving BYU. It just would seem likely a really odd match.

Its not the plan that's ever the problem, its the execution of the plan. We wont know the execution of Krafts plan until the end.
Just some not-so-random thoughts about this ****-show we're experiencing:
- I hope at least some of us will have a long memory when the announcement is finally made and call out the jag-offs on here, Twitter/X, or whatever other platform that's being used to share "inside info" or say they have heard its a "big name" but can't name the guy. I realize we live in this digital age along with this "everyone has to have a take" era in sports media where statements are simply forgotten as soon as something else comes along but I hope appropriate folks are called out for spouting out crap.
- Kraft better end up with a home-run hire or else this will look horrible. The one thing that keeps popping in my head is when Nebraska went with Callahan after Solich. They have never been a factor since. The BYU option reeks of that type of move.
- At the same time, he could be running an awful search, failed with each prospective candidate and somehow still fall a$$ backwards into a great hire. My point being that he may get too much credit if he ends up with a great choice but I think he deserves ALL the blame if he makes an awful choice.
- I'm not sure how useful a podcast (Snyder) or tweets from supposed insiders are when they won't actually name names. I get it's about clicks now and not facts but if you are essentially an independent journalist, I don't know how you build a base by just alluding to vague inklings of insider info. I canceled her substack in part for any actual information.
- I was and am still in favor of the firing of Franklin. I was never a big fan of his but give him credit for what he was able to accomplish. But it was always clear he was never a great game-day coach nor did he have the ability to out scheme an opponent. This year, it became evident that he lacked the ability to rally a team. The players have loved him but he couldn't dig them out of the mental hole they and he were in.
- I don't blame Kraft for firing him when he did. Franklin had lost the team, lost the fans, and it was spiraling. Firing him then prevent 7 more weeks of question about whether he would be fired at the end of the season. Kraft may be blamed for the choice but he shouldn't be blamed for doing it when he did.
- I respect and appreciate Terry Smith for all that he's done and the man he is but I don't see how he would be an improvement over Franklin. You can't base what would be a hundred million dollar decision on 6-7 weeks where they only beat 3 awful teams. If this was 2013 and BOB had left mid-season and Smith stepped in with a 3-3 closing record, I would be more open to it given the circumstances of the hole the team was in. There is too much at stake to place it with a first-time HC who hasn't even been a coordinator at the college-level.
- This is just personal opinion but why do I care what Scott and Jay Paterno think of this search? They aren't Joe.
- Unless the hire was Urban Meyer or another coach who was not currently with a team, why did anyone think Kraft would have settled the search by now?
- I'm so sick of the national sports media who spent years criticizing Franklin (I heard 'Big Game James' for years on XM radio) but as soon as PSU steps up to make a brave choice--he's the best they will ever have? I get sports media, nowadays, are dripping with hypocrisy but at the very least acknowledge your role in creating this narrative about him.
- Any time a big school coaching search happens, it is amazing how much is made of coaches' spouses and their liking or hating their current or potential towns. I'm not just responding to this board but others and social media. Of course, this year it hits closer to home with our own search as we heard Deboer's wife doesn't like the south, Lincoln Riley's wife doesn't like LA. Is this just the go-to reason to convince oneself that the coach is a real option?
- In my opinion, all this boils down to common sense. If it made sense for the candidate to say yes to a PSU offer, then I would deem them an actual possibility. There is zero common sense for Deboer, Riley, or Freeman to make the move to PSU from their current schools. To think any of them were realistic, you'd have to live in a fantasy world I don't inhabit.
- Guys I'm cool with getting the gig: Hartline, Heupel, Will Stein.
- Guys I'd be concerned with but willing to wait and see: Tomlin (there's no actual reporting of him but I could see it happening)--I think he would kill it with recruiting/transfers the first few years but on-the-field, I think we'd see the same issues that have been happening with the Steelers for the past 5-7 years. Brent Key--little to no midwest connections but good coach.
- Guys that would cause me to become a casual fan and stop my giving: BYU guy (see above), Daboll, Rhule (if he were to come back into consideration), Smith, Gruden, and Fitzgerald (thank god MSU took him).
Regarding the prospect of Kalani Sitake as HC.....his BYU salary is only $3M. This could make it possible to retain Terry Smith in a more prominent role and pay them both very well. There's also the possibility that Sitake brings with him 5 star QB, Ryder Lyons who's committed to BYU.

Regarding wives comments, over the years I "dragged" my wife to northern Appalachia in Pennsyltucky, the Australian bush and the windy great plains of Wyoming in addition to other more attractive places. Did she like it? No. Did she adapt? Yes. Did she create lasting friendships? Yes. These coaches wives can cry me a river only after having moved 22 times
As weird as this all is going, is it possible that it is DeBoer? It seems like such a crazy longshot that doesn't make any sense but I could see him not wanting it getting out until after the CCG. Would at least explain why things are so strange but if so what happens if he wins the CCG? And they are likely going to the playoffs regardless, would he not coach the team?

agreed. he is now playing with fire because of signing day. I know it doesn't mean much because the kids csan turn around and portal. But let's be honest, how many kinds on BYU commit list and flipping to the portal over xmas because that dude comes here?
Right now, JF has found a big game he can finally win at and the score is currently JF 56 PK 0.
LOL I tried to tell people but to no avail. Oh well. That said I liked him and was holding out hope that we would be able to come to an agreement with him but sadly no. IMO he will be an excellent coach for them recruiting there shouldn't be a problem as Cali is just loaded every year.

Deboer has 0 ties to the east coast except for being at Alabama the past 2 years. He was in Big Ten territory as an assistant at Indiana and at Southern Illinois and Eastern Michigan as he worked his way up the coaching ladder.
Sitake just seems like a BYU lifer. His entire coaching career has not only been all west coast but it’s been almost all Utah only. He’s been coaching in the state of Utah every year since 2002 except for 2015 at Oregon St. 22 of the last 23 years in Utah only (at BYU, Utah, and Southern Utah).
Not questioning his abilities as a coach, but this seems like such a weird fit.
It would be a non-sensical hire in so many ways.

Duke has 5 losses on the weak ACC. PSU is now a 3rd tier school.
PSU is the ONLY P5 program that still has a HC vacancy, AND the only school that lost the incoming recruiting class. Kraft really screwed this up, and it could mean the end to Penn State football as we know it.
That probably is the goal, but they should spend the $700 MM on stadium renovations first.

Agree with most of this. I think AK is an "ok" recruiter and has gotten some recruits on his own. It was said by o-state folks last year when we got Knowles that he was a lazy and reluctant recruiter and that LJ and Walton & Laranitis were their main defensive recruiters
