When these agents get involved sometimes it takes longer to negotiate a contract.
More than double what he was making. That's a bit much. Would have been fine giving him a 125% bump & using the rest of those millions to buy more & better players.
Worries me a little.Currently he's the lowest paid SEC head coach (among universities who report salary). $6.5 million would make him 8 out of 14. It seems like a big jump, but it just gets him to middle of the pack, which I think is fair given what he's shown so far.
That is an absolute no-no. Not sure how many times it has to be repeated but universities and their athletic departments can not be involved in NIL deals....period.More than double what he was making. That's a bit much. Would have been fine giving him a 125% bump & using the rest of those millions to buy more & better players.
Worries me a little.
The great Bill Muschamp went 9-4 in year 2, beating Michigan in the Outback Bowl. Don't want a repeat of what happened next.
I don't care. I want to cheat. In fact, I want to cheat better than anyone else. Cheating in college football leads to championships. I want those. That is an absolute no-no. Not sure how many times it has to be repeated but universities and their athletic departments can not be involved in NIL deals....period.
Universities and their athletic depts are not SUPPOSED to be involved in NIL deals, but we all know it is happening everywhere. Don't be naive. That is an absolute no-no. Right. The current system practically encourages is.Universities and their athletic depts are not SUPPOSED to be involved in NIL deals, but we all know it is happening everywhere. Don't be naive.
I am not naive. I realize that there are some schools that are involved on differing levels.....but IF you get caught......(especially at a program like ours) expect to be made an example of. We wouldn't get the benefit of the doubt.Universities and their athletic depts are not SUPPOSED to be involved in NIL deals, but we all know it is happening everywhere. Don't be naive.
Thought this was done. What have they been doing?
You've got to have an eye toward the market.More than double what he was making. That's a bit much. Would have been fine giving him a 125% bump & using the rest of those millions to buy more & better players.
I get what you're saying, but how many of those making more are overpaid? It just seems like a circular argument to me to say that our guy needs to make more because some other school overpaid for their guy. Then, the next time Missouri or Miss State thinks about giving their guy a raise, they will use our guy's salary as a comparable. It feels like the fraudulent appraisals in the early 2000s that contributed to the real estate bubble.Currently he's the lowest paid SEC head coach (among universities who report salary). $6.5 million would make him 8 out of 14. Oh, no doubt. They’re all overpaid. But folks get skittish and worry that someone else will come along and throw a little extra money at your guy and take him away. That’s why Michigan State way overpaid for Mel Tucker. This is probably as much a reward for what he’s accomplished, as well as preemptively overpaying him to prevent others from pursuing him.I get what you're saying, but how many of those making more are overpaid? It absolutely has to come with raised expectations.I like Beamer but I too think it’s a bit much after 2 seasons.
For this kind of jack, expectations should be raised from our normal 7-8 win seasons.
What is the buyout if and when this raise all turns out to be a horrible idea? Why not give him a one million dollar raise…. and let’s see how it goes next year. This crap of giving out huge raises after a good year is ridiculous. I don’t care what other coaches make, those coaches are so over paid in most cases it’s not even funny. Can you imagine paying Stoops 6.5 mil a year…he averages 6.6 wins per year in his 10 at UK.
can you imagine getting $1 million raise and not being happy? I don’t remember what Shane was making but let’s say it’s 3.5, and he goes to 4.5, I think he would be a happy camper. The more we see improvement in the more he can get raises.. but this crap I’m doubling someone’s salary after an eight and five year it’s kind of scary and irrational
It's necessary to fight off all the other power 5 schools trying to steal him from us. /sarcWhy not give him a one million dollar raise…. and let’s see how it goes next year. I know it's sarcasm but the bait was put out. I don't know how serious that rumor was or if it was seen, but it was there. It's necessary to fight off all the other power 5 schools trying to steal him from us. /sarc
You've got to have an eye toward the market if you're trying to keep a guy. There's no use trying to denigrate the merit of other people's pay in order to excuse paying your guy less. I'm not saying all salaries are just, only that you aren't going to run counter to the market if your goal is to keep a coach.I get what you're saying, but how many of those making more are overpaid? Yep. It’s preemptive. Everyone’s impatient, looking for the next hot coach and willing to roll the dice. Reality is you have to overpay to ward off other suitors. It's necessary to fight off all the other power 5 schools trying to steal him from us. /sarc
Without cause it starts at $5 million, which is not one years salary. What is the buyout if and when this raise all turns out to be a horrible idea?

Yeah the issue is nobody was coming to snatch our up and comer out of Cola. No sense in giving out that type of raise this year.I'm with you. I'd like to see a guy put a little more of a body of work together before getting big raises, but it's what you have to do these days. Everyone's desperate to find the next good/great coach so if you don't pay your coach who has had success, someone else will. MSU freaked out and gave Mel Tucker an enormous pay day after 1 year and then they didn't even make a bowl this year.
....and if a Michigan or LSU came along and snatched him away with a large contract and he then had huge success there, you'd be criticizing Tanner and the BOT for their short-sightedness. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. Shocking!!Too much. But that’s what Tanner does and BOT does. Need more proof of his abilities. Oh well, it’s only money.
so a bump to 4 would be a big raise........if he has another good year, go to 6. Pay the assistants that deserve it big money to stay. If Shane does well next year and the year after, his name may indeed pop up on radars elsewhere. We can pay to keep him and I truly believe him when he says this is his dream job. I'd take 7 mil for my dream job.It was 2.75. It was low.
That's pretty normal....in fact, probably a little lower percentage than is normal. When Muschamp got his raise, normal buyout was around 100% of the remaining contract. Muschamp's got lowered in the extension that went into effect a year prior to his firing. Buyouts were dropping from 100% at that time but didn't see any as low as 65%. Seventy to 75% were the lowest I saw in the new coaching contracts....and many were around 85%.so a bump to 4 would be a big raise........if he has another good year, go to 6. Pay the assistants that deserve it big money to stay. If Shane does well next year and the year after, his name may indeed pop up on radars elsewhere. My biggest concern is the buyout...which to me even if we give him the 6 mil, why include a buyout of 65% of the remaining years on the contract. That's almost 4 mil per year on the remaining contract years. If he has 3 years left, we pay him 12 mil. He would only be fired if he turns us back into a Muschamp dumpster, or does something unethical.....the latter seems like it would never happen but if we start losing big, the seat gets hot quick. Can't fathom paying people doing a crappy job 12 mil to go away. Goes against my upbringing.

Shane deserved a big raise, and yes, he was low.....but we took a chance on him since he was never a coach, he got a HUGE increase over what he's made ever in his life, he's done a very good job and I'm a fan..........but 2.75 mil ain't chump change for an unproven head coach. Now he's got two years, we see he's got a chance to be special............but if he has a losing record this next season, 6 mil is a ton to pay. No one was coming after him for 4-5 mil this year so were we really worried he was leaving?
But yeah, he was low and a calibration was needed......me thinks we over calibrated based on the short sample size. Muschamp doing well his 2nd year still rings in my ear as a way not to jump the gun on contracts. And for the record, I was a Beamer fan the day we hired him. Now bigger.
It's kind of like a nuclear attack - either you're preemptive or you're toast!Yep. It’s preemptive. Everyone’s impatient, looking for the next hot coach and willing to roll the dice. Reality is you have to overpay to ward off other suitors.
