With a bullpen that had Nathan and Glen Perkins to get three outs with a three run lead, he brings Rivera into the game in the 9th. That's overmanaging and stupid.
Too many things could happen wrong/differently if he doesn't bring him in 3-0 in the 8th. What if the NL takes the lead and then closes it in the top of the 9th with Rivera never getting into the game? Leyland played it perfectly.
Really? And ruin the moment of clearing the entire field for his entrance? They had it planned as was obvious by the entire entrance being filmed and the entire field being cleared off for only Rivera to run on to. They had the moment perfectly in the 8th. I'm glad Leyland managed it that way because that was a top 5 All-Star moment in my book.
Edited to add: in the postgame interview by MLBNetwork they asked Rivera about being brought in in the 8th. He said Leyland asked him before the game if he was alright with coming in in the 8th and Rivera said yes. The whole thing had been planned before the first pitch. MLB and Leyland wanted an entire inning for Rivera. His last inning ever in an ASG. The plan worked to perfection.
I can understand wanting the save but man that was an awesome moment. I can't wait to watch his final regular season game at home. How do they top that?
