Sorry if Germans. According to the survivor, the two NFL players gave up hope very early on. I just can't imagine that, no matter what the conditions. I know that Marquis Cooper had a wife and child, not sure about the others. I can't wrap my mind around why in the world you take the jacket off....period.

and do not even want to begin to try. I might have a new "worst fear" because of this story.

really. It can make you do all sorts of stupid stuff. People have even stripped down naked in snow due to it
I'm a scuba diver and one thing people don't really understand is just how quickly you lose body heat in the water. Even relatively warm water can cause you problems. These guys were in the open ocean and it was stripping out all their internal heat. Along with making your mind do some pretty odd things it also would hurt really, really bad. Personally, I'm holding on to the damn boat till the very end but I can see how someone who knows nothing about hypothermia could let their mind trick them into giving up.

I forget where I saw it, but basically in the later stages of hypothermia the mind begins to perceive intense heat for some reason, so people who are actually freezing to death feel like they're getting very hot, thus the 'crazy stripping' business.
