Good move. Wonder if Patrick County stays. That’s an easy 2 and a half hour bus ride.

Hour+ on the bus to go anywhere in the Piedmont but GW (and that one will be pretty close to an hour), big oof.

They better hope they're either really good or really terrible, playoff road trips to Salem, Blacksburg, or PC start at 3 hours long.

Martinsville should be in the Dogwood IMO..

This is wild to me. I remember seeing Salem play them four times in the 90s in the POs (Salem ending Martinsville's season each time), like they were a solidly 4A level school and I check Wikipedia now and their enrollment has basically dropped by 50% over the last 20 years and the city's population has gone down nearly 25% since the 1990 census.

all city schools are losing population and need to give their children that they have left a good experience athletically by biting the bullet and going down in competition.

Between Hooker, Bassett, Dan River Mills and tobacco jobs leaving, the whole area is pretty much dead man’s land. Martinsville/Henry County still a lot better living than Danville/South Boston/Halifax.

The Martinsville area has and always will be inferior to the Danville area. Danville always had more professional and managerial jobs. Danville is getting the casino and never lost its economy at the rate of the Martinsville area.
Went down to Danville Christmas and saw lots of those trucks sitting outside the new truck plant.

Job wise, thanks to Goodyear & Nestle. Martinsville has always had more progressive people than Danville City. Much nicer people and prettier women in Martinsville/Henry Counry.

I don't feel inferior to Danville. When Nafta hit in the early 90's it killed us. All textile, furniture and support business left the area and also the workforce left. In the late 60's to mid 70's Martinsville had 1300-1400 hundred students and was in the AAA Western district with GW, Halifax, Jefferson-Roanoke, and EC Glass among others. Now we have about 540 students and are not sure how long the school will remain open. We have been thru some tough times but we sure don't feel inferior to anyone.

I’ve never heard Martinsville being inferior to Danville. For me it’s always been the other way around. I’m a Danville native. May not be a lot to do in Martinsville but it’s head and shoulders better than Danville.

Wow....who knew that as a Iifelong resident of Martinsville that I should feel inferior to Danville?? All I knew about Danville before Tommy schooled me is that I don't take my family there after the sun goes down.

With Martinsville's decision to return to a town and incorporate back into Henry County it does seem like closing the high school might be an inevitability but these things happen (opening new, closing/merging old) all the time. I'm not terribly familiar with the geography of the county, would the kids most likely end up at MV or Bassett? If they weren't to split them it would turn (let's say 500 kids) Bassett into a middle of the pack 5A school and either put MV at one of the biggest 4A or one of the smallest 5A schools, of course when they run the numbers again this could shift slightly.

Would they want to rock the boat in such a way or would they just seek to try and split them somewhat so Bassett stays in 4A and MV simply moves up one division instead of potentially two?

The right coach could turn that program around. Bluestone is traditionally just as darn huge as Salem and Franklin County. How the hell they are that bad, has never ever sat well with me. Park View is always good in basketball and has a competitive football team. The right coach with the right culture could turn them into something special. IMO , it’s one of the better jobs in the state.

When is Danville getting a casino?

^That seems like it would be wildly popular depending on what they offered. For anyone in the triangle, it's a four or five hour drive to the nearest casino (Maryland Live, Harrah's Cherokee or Charles Town).

It’s Jack to do there but it’s an hour drive to Richmond, an hour to Raleigh/Durham, 2 hours, 15 min to the beach. Not bad at all trade off.

Did not to intend to insult anyone from Martinsville. Danville has just done less worse economically during the economic realignment. No locality in the Piedmont area is what they used to be.
Hope MHS continues. Great tradition in all sports and they have a good football coach who is a greater human being, Coach Martin. He is a lot like Coach Harry Johnson was in Danville

It should also be noted that Danville voters approved a sales tax increase in November that will benefit the school system and allow some much needed facility upgrades. Expect GW to be young next year and they may struggle but it's a place that will never be bad in football. With the improvements, the casino and the athletes the school has year in and year out they Eagles will always be a team to reckon with.

I agree with you that Bobby Martin is a good coach and man. We handled Martinsville fairly easily this year but you can see the improvement he's made in his short tenure there.

Does anyone know when a decision on PC will be reached? If they stay in the Piedmont everyone will have to drop an out of district game to accommodate Mecklenburg County. Teams need to know sooner than later especially the opponents that are dropped so they have time to find someone else to play.

Danville’s biggest problem is the lack of culture. Casino not fixing that. It’s not a Nick Anderson thing, it’s not really a GW thing. It’s citywide. There’s also no pride from this generation.

I went through one of my Weapons Control schools with a guy from Chase City. He was NFL size. I never understood how Bluestone was so bad either.

Pretty much how I've always felt about the triangle. Second rate (unless you're in college) but close to everything.

Hard to argue with your last point Bo. I agree this generation thinks a lot differently. There's a lot of the "me" mentality in people today. When combined with little hope for a future, minimal pride and no parental accountability, it becomes a breeding ground for failure. Let's hope the Eagles are far from that.

It probably won't be until the next cycle until we find out about Patrick County High School.
