I can't open the full file from MHSAA at work....is Pearl dropping just to get the same number of teams in each 7A region? Happened to look at the current classifications this weekend and noticed one region had one more school in it than the other three regions.

[Disclaimer: My Hillcrest education makes me very very ignorant of public school sports classifications and such.]

Pearl dropped because there isn’t a tie for 24th like there was when reclassification was previously done.

I can’t recall if they were in that tie for 24th two years ago. However, Pearl is the largest 6A school.

I had hoped North Tippah (Walnut/Falkner) would remain in 2a; there's not enough combined talent there (and I hope I'm wrong about this) to be remotely competitive in 3a. Will probably end up playing Ripley every year.

Interesting. The 3 schools that moved from 4A to 5A last cycle (NE Jones, Sumrall & Purvus) go right back down. District 3- 6A just got tougher with Pearl, West Jones, Hattiesburg, George Co & Terry.

I heard (but not verified) that Meridian & Murrah were the 2 schools tied for 24th last cycle. 22nd & 24th this cycle. Sucks for Murrah. They really need to move down.

Yes, we went through this at Wesson when my son was in 9th grade. We had no business in Region 7-3A in football and basketball. He played 4 years getting skull-dragged in basketball especially, then they reclassified to 2A after he graduated. It sucked majorly.

Scanning this man how Moss Point has fallen. Used to be a Big 8 and old 5A power. Now 311 students & only 8 away from being 3A.

Guessing Katrina at first, and then the growth of East Central, did them in.

But yeah they put out players in the old days.

Does Mississippi really have enough differentiation to need 7 levels? It seems excessive to me.
More classes = more playoff teams = more money for the MHSAA. There are a lot of teams that make the playoffs that have no business making the playoffs.

In 3A there are 39 football playing schools. 32 of them make the playoffs.

Ridiculous.

The decline started even before Katrina. But yeah, that really hurt. Migration to East Central & Vancleave. Used to work about 4-5 weeks per year in Pascagoula back then. Even before Katrina MP was a blighted shell. I can’t imagine how bad it is now.

In 1A they all make it.

It's not really about the overall number, it's about the difference in the levels. And it's all between 5A and 7A. It's a parabolic effect, the top teams (like Brandon) are just so big they exaggerate the divisions.

Ridiculous.
The size of the actual playoffs is ridiculous, yes.

Katrina ?? 21 years ago on the other side of the state ? Probly dont even have schools in Waveland then
Guessing you are under 30 and don't actually remember Katrina? Just FYI, this was Katrina. The eye hitting in Waveland does not mean that Moss Point wasn't hit. Moss Point still had 20 ft of water in places.

That said, I think Moss Point's issues weren't really Katrina. I think people have been fleeing it just like they flee jackson. They just don't have the capital and jobs associated with it to cause people to talk about it or for there to be a lot of interest in reversing it.

In 7A, one of the Coast teams (likely D'iberville or Harrison Central) is going to have to be in Region 3, where their closest district game will be an hour and a half away.

Mendenhall dropping back to 3A after being 4A for so long is surprising....with that being said, it puts Mendenhall and Magee back as a district game and back to the end of the schedule the way it should have been like it was forever.
There are a few schools in 3A that can compete for the title and Mendenhall, Magee, Noxubee, Seminary should be at the top.

7A should go to 3 8-team divisions.
Horn Lake, Southaven, Desoto, Hernando, Lewisburg, Oxford, Tupelo, Starkville
Madison, Germantown, Clinton, Murrah, NWR, Brandon, Meridian, Oak Grove
Petal, Ocean Springs, St Martin, Biloxi, Gulfport, d'Ibervile, Harrison Central, West Harrison

You'd have to give a wild card to the best 6th place team and send the Central playoff teams north or south based on geography (generally Germantown, Madison, Clinton & NWR would go north and the rest would go south).

The MAIS playoff model is awful.

Saw where in 2A, Lee (8-2, 3-0 in district) beat North Delta (6-4, 2-1 in district) 34-6.

North Delta is the 1 seed
Lee is the 2 seed
I’m wondering why Canton isn’t the 2-seed and Lee is the 3-seed…

If you’re going by power points, Canton’s average is 38.1 compared to Lee’s 37.8…

If MAIS is going to use a 17ed up system, you’d think they would be 17ing consistent about it.

You would be wrong on the first paragraph dipschitt. I agree it has no effect on Moss Point schools 21 years later

Dang. I don't think MS School for the Blind will ever get out of 1A. That's tough considering their sports officiating alumni.

A few years ago Pearl had over 1100 students for classification purposes and was safely in the Top class. Seeing they Now only using 3 high school grades is interesting moving forward. I know Pearl has a larger than normal senior class this year. I also know they have had a significant influx of South Jackson residents into Pearl over the last several years. I wonder if that has driven some families to relocate their students.
