The decline started even before Katrina. But yeah, that really hurt. Migration to East Central & Vancleave. Used to work about 4-5 weeks per year in Pascagoula back then. Even before Katrina MP was a blighted shell. I can’t imagine how bad it is now.
The paper mill closing is the biggest reason it's went to hell.
Sad thing is up until the last few years, they could have been a 4a power. Not only is the population declining, the talent is too.

In 7A, one of the Coast teams (likely D'iberville or Harrison Central) is going to have to be in Region 3, where their closest district game will be an hour and a half away.
It'll be HC and it'll be hilarious. George County has had to deal with it for years now.

So Elzy combined with Greenwood and moved them up to 5A, and Falkner and Walnut combined into a 3A school. Makes me wonder about the fate of schools like Blue Mountain, Ingomar, West Union, Thrasher, Jumpertown, Wheeler, etc in Northeast MS.

Mt Olive having less than 100 students is baffling. Collins and Mt Olive need to consolidate. I'd love to know how much yearly is spent to keep it running (salaries, utilities, maintenance, food etc) for less than 100 students.

As do Mize-Taylorsville and Stringer-Bay Springs. But there's one thing all 3 of these pairs have in common and I don't think many on either side want to consolidate.

none want to consolidate. Magee and Mendenhall was supposed to already be consolidated. Blueprints on a school were made. Land was chosen. Then crickets.

At the least combine:
West Union/Myrtle
East Union/Ingomar
Jumpertown/Thrasher
New Site/Wheeler
Blue Mountain can send their 10s of students to Ripley

I had hoped North Tippah (Walnut/Falkner) would remain in 2a; there's not enough combined talent there (and I hope I'm wrong about this) to be remotely competitive in 3a. Will probably end up playing Ripley every year.
I’m sure Ripley will dominate the first few years but that will make for a cool new in county rivalry

It’s because consolidation only makes sense as a means of survival. Not because they MIGHT save some theoretical administration money.

Where consolidation really makes sense is when it’s time to replace facilities at at least one school, or when enrollment has dwindled enough you can absorb one school into another without any new construction.

7A should go to 3 8-team divisions.
Horn Lake, Southaven, Desoto, Hernando, Lewisburg, Oxford, Tupelo, Starkville
Madison, Germantown, Clinton, Murrah, NWR, Brandon, Meridian, Oak Grove
Petal, Ocean Springs, St Martin, Biloxi, Gulfport, d'Ibervile, Harrison Central, West Harrison

You'd have to give a wild card to the best 6th place team and send the Central playoff teams north or south based on geography (generally Germantown, Madison, Clinton & NWR would go north and the rest would go south).
3 7A regions may work for football with one game a week on a Friday night but not for other sports. For example Starkville is to far from Desoto county to make that feasible. 150-180 mile drive on a yellow dog.... on a school night....that's rough.

Just add a region with less schools and use a bye.

Region 1-3A will be Ripley, North Tippah, Kossuth, Alcorn Central, and Belmont.

Because it was a stupid idea that was pushed by county "powers" trying to get rich.
It was a rejection by the people of Simpson county and now there are new people in charge on the Board.
The bond was voted down, then they tried to fund it through a capitla lease agreement, and that made the people really angry.
They recinded the plan saying they couldnt afford the $41M cost. DUH?!
The land that was purchased was sold.
In short.....Mendenhall and Magee said It Ain't Happening.

I would be interested to see who else will be in Mendenhall and Magee's district.....woe to them.
Raleigh. Seminary would make sense but they will be paired with the pine belt area teams. If it is those four teams there wouldn’t be a harder district comparatively speaking in MS

Agreed, i would think Hazelhurst, JDC, Crystal Springs, McLaurin, Quitman, would be candidates to split up into divisions.
Who knows.
