Chase Lewallen from Sumrall High School committed to MSU today. I guess he sees the shape that we're in and can expect early playing time. He is a junior SS. He had offers from Ole Miss, Florida State, Oklahoma State and Southern Miss.

Sounds like a good pick up.

and we are also recruiting one of his teammates- Jared Miller who is a 6'3" 220 pound pitcher who throws in the low 90's. USM is also recruiting him as well.

Miller is a senior, I believe.

Signing Lewallen makes sense because we will lose Butler, and Sneed after next year, and I expect we will go after at least two more high school infielders. I'm also thinking that we are going to go after 2-3 more high school OF's to.

Lewallen is currently hitting .420.

The guy that I want is Korey Barlow from Jackson Prep. He's a 3B with legit power. Unfortunately, I hear he is an LSU lean. Hopefully we can sway him.

How can you tell how good a kid is when it comes to baseball recruiting?

I think a good and obvious start is to look at who offers him. But since each of those offers could be for different amounts of scholarship money, is there a way to differentiate? In football every kid gets the same scholarship but not in baseball.

Both of these kids have some great offers but in general is there a way to separate them at the end of the day?
Not looking for an OM v. MSU, just a general thought

we are mostly staying away from small MPSA schools except for the catcher from Brookhaven Academy. Also, we aren't recruiting just from our camp. That is an improvement. Also, Polk and Raffo aren't recruiting these guys. That is my source that these guys are pretty decent.

Lewallen and Miller are both solid players, Lewallen moreso. He will be immediate help. As for CT, he is a nice player, too. Most of those schools you have listed haven't actually offered, but I still think he will be a very good college player. Look at him like a Hogue.....not really a pro guy, but a solid college player. Good gets.....

that baseball recruiting is a little bit easier than the others because baseball stats are so refined.

But I typically look at height, handedness, position, and for pitchers fastball velocity first.

I like pitchers who are at least 6'0" tall and I'm a big fan of the guys who are 6'3"- 6'5" because those are the guys that have the frame to put on weight and develop. Win/loss record for pitcher is kind of useless, it more or less tells how good their high school team was, but that's also not necessarily a bad thing. I look at strikeout to walk ratio and then strikeout to innings pitched ratio. A guy who has 100 K's and 10 walks in 50 innings is probably going to be a pretty good prospect as long as he doesn't come from a small MPSA school. Also look at ERA- a good D-I prospect should have an ERA of 1.50 or below. If you get a pitcher with an ERA of below 1.00, with the other stats I mentioned, he's probably pretty good.

Hitters are different. After you see how tall they are and how big they are, you then can look at the stats. A guy who hits at least 5 home runs in Mississippi is going to have a chance to be a decent power hitter in college by his senior year. Someone who has more than 10 is a legit power hitter. I expect ALL hitters to hit at least .400 in high school if they are a legit D-I prospect. Then you look at stolen base totals, and those kind of speak for themselves. So, a guy with 16 home runs, 60 RBI's a .480 AVG and 20 steals is going to be a pretty good prospect. Catchers you can kind of look past some things like AVG or power if they are very good defensively. That's a MUST for catching prospects. Also realize that most D-I prospects who are middle infielders are going to be SS for their high school team, and some 3B. Some corner guys play 3B- Barlow is a good example, and some 1B, especially LH 1B play first in high school. Most OF prospects play CF. So, if a guy plays second on his HS team, I'm going to be a little weary of his defense.

Another thing to look at is the community. A player from Madison Central is probably going to be more refined than a player from Canton High School.

Those are some of the main predictors, and also why I'm excited about a guy like CC Watson and think that Matt Lane is going to be a project.
