I would just prefer the M-State alone. Moreover, I think the seal should be used on everything related to academics.

However, as I said in another thread, the M-State is growing on me, as is the new helmet.

The alternative designs are good - definitely better than walking bully.

are a little more lax than they should be. A major university needs to be a little tighter on its brand usage. If we're ever going to have some semblance of long-term identity nationwide, we need to get this crap done right, right now. It's officially released at this point, which means we'll be seeing this same thing in about 5 years. It's not that hard to get this right.

I like them all OK. Some of the older bulldog "spirit marks" were better. I like the cowbell, just wonder why they don't flip it over so you can RING IT! Wouldn't mind seeing the Bulldog (head or MState version) on the helment.

the use of the cowbell one. Do I think it looks great? It's ok... Do I want it on our football helmets? Of course not... but the cowbell is OURS. The cowbell IS Mississippi State. It's OUR tradition in a sport that is known for it's unique traditions at each campus. What's frustrating is that so many other schools and/or pro teams are adopting the use of it. 1) It's watering down OUR tradition and 2) the more schools that use it, the more it will be perceived as a problem, the more chance some organization (NCAA - No Cowbells Anymore Association) might decide to actually outright ban it. Even if it's something that just goes on banners in the junction or on tshirts or something, I think it should be adopted and put out there.

...stepping off soapbox

Is the fact that there's no separation between the banner and the bottom part of the M in the first one. The problem is that appears to be the primary one.
Basically what Azzuri was saying.

It should be turned 270 degrees. The bell should point upward, not downward. Obviously designed by someone that has never rang a cowbell.

From MSU:
</p>
A nine-month process begun by former Mississippi State president Robert H. "Doc" Foglesong is culminating in the introduction of new graphic symbols intended to unify and modernize current university marks, said Interim President Roy H. Ruby.</p>

"A committee that included representatives from our trademarks and licensing office, as well as other units around campus, worked with a professional design firm to develop marks that incorporate the well-recognized M-State into the university's official signature," he said.</p>

The firm, Joe Bosack Graphic Design of Pottsville, Penn., has created work for the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, the National Football League, Major League Baseball, Universal Studios, and dozens of individual teams and universities. The firm also created the Southeastern Conference's logo on the occasion of its 75th anniversary in 2007.</p>

Both corporate and spirit marks are included in new trademarked symbols that represent an evolving and modern university, Ruby said. They were formally approved by the previous interim president earlier this fall.</p>

"The new university wordmark incorporates a crest that is drawn directly from a shape in the center of MSU's traditional seal, forming a link to our history and past," he said. "The M-State is centered in that shape and will be used with a new typeface that clearly ties the symbol to the full university name."</p>

Spirit marks include a more modernized Bully logo, a trademarked pawprint and a cowbell, all expected to be popular marks on official MSU merchandise. The M-State has been slightly streamlined so that fine details are not lost when translated to clothing and other official MSU merchandise.</p>

"These are now being introduced in some athletic department merchandise and have been made available to official MSU vendors," Ruby said. "Graphic standards for campus use of the symbols are being rolled out now, and campus units should adopt these as they order new supplies of letterhead, update Web sites or plan new publications.</p>

"We hope this family of marks will help Mississippi State brand itself consistently across every form of communication, ranging from publications and merchandise to Web sites and other electronic media," Ruby concluded.</p>
And if you'll notice, the web site now has the new logo at the top of the page.

one of the university images for quite some time.

You may know better though.
