Counterpoint: If a panther, which is native to Florida, snuck in the park and killed a kid, would they also be liable? In both cases, it's never happened before.
Gray area no doubt. Read in some article couple years ago a gator in same place chased someone for a bit. So it did kind of happen before tho no injury. Family was so scared they stayed far away from that beach remainder of stay. Panther or gator is quite a difference for such imo.

I want to take in a poisonous snake into Walmarts lawn and garden. let it loose and let it bite me, then sue the Waltons for every penny they got. All 20 billion of it.
Like the copperhead in Lowes garden area recently tho no one was bitten. Scared the sh*t out of em tho

I don't know the first thing about panthers. If that's a similar dynamic to what's going on with this tragedy (in listening to native Floridians ITT, any hotel built next to a large lake is going to have plenty of gators), then ya.

A certain amount of security is to be expected if you're paying that type of cash for a hotel room.
All I know is they're black. So they can't be no count.

Copperheads? ****, let's not get crazy here. Just need one strong enough to get me to the hospital.

Might I suggest inducing a non lethal self inflicted allergic reaction of some sort while pretending to be attacked by the Hognose snake. Non poisonous and plays like a cobra. Won't bite, keep messin with it is just rolls over and plays dead.

Absolutely cannot fathom what the dad is going through. Good lord how tragic. The whole story just seems crazy to me. You're at a Disney Resort with a beach and you can sit on the sand and watch movies but there is a danger of getting eaten by an alligator if you have your feet in the water? It just sounds crazy, like what the hell is Disney thinking? The whole thing is just so bizarre to me. Can't believe it hasn't happened before.

I'm not one for frivolous lawsuits, but that family deserves to walk away with a LOT of money.

Disney actively recruits tourists who *arent* from Florida and who don't know the first thing about gators. If I'm paying >$600/night for a room at a luxury hotel owned by one of the most famous corporations in the world, I would expect not only extensive education and warnings about life-threatening risks, but also legitimate barriers from said risks. This isn't ****ing Botswana.

If you have lethal, camouflaged apex predators within striking distance of your guests, you need to do a LOT to mitigate those risks.
I haven't had my mind changed very often from a message board post, but this one did it. Really.

My hope now is I can get in on a class action suit for being on the property the same day.

To me it seems like common sense because they're from Nebraska which is football crazy and they beat the Florida GATORS in a national championship . Why are they called Gators if that animal is not prevalent in Florida . Even if they're not sports fans it is still common sense that if you travel to many places that there are wild animals .

Alaska-Grizzly
California parts-mountain lion
Yosemite and Yellowstone-wolves at the least

People need to take responsibility for themselves and stop depending on the world to baby proof itself . If you've got a kid that is too young to think for themselves then it's your responsibility to do that until they can .

I'm not sure I'd be able to live with it. And to make it worse I've got a 2 year old son.

I really think I'd die too, right then and there. I can't see myself not going into the water and never coming out.

As a dad of two toddlers, this is the most horrific thing I could imagine. I would want to die as well. I couldn't go on after that.

Back in 2008 I was I fishing in a farm pond with a buddy in Williston (north Florida) and my buddy had his infant baby with us. Well, there was a 4 foot gator in the water staring at us about 20 feet off the bank. He kept inching closer and closer. Got as close as 10 feet and then my buddy hung his infant baby in a tree in some hammock looking ****. Fish weren't biting because of it, and that gator wanted my buddy's baby.

I just remember the look in that gator's eyes. It wanted that fresh baby meat.

Interesting. Back in mid 70's I went gator hunting on a small lake with a friend that owned a farm up in Williston. gators were thick as thieves. PS we didn't use baby's as bait though. [winking]

haha, I hope not.

Also have another buddy in 2010 who worked at these rich people's land in Leesburg. This property sits on the runway where Randy Rhodes died in that plane/bus crash back in the day. My buddy saw one on the owner's property. Brought his rifle out and shot it. He skinned it and gave me a bunch of meat. Damn was it good. We let it marinate for a couple of days in some buttermilk. Dayyyum.

Did you and your buddy eat them after you shot them up? A lot of gators up in that area.

Terrible event. Disney might as well write the check out right now to the family if signs were not posted in the area.

Terrible situation.

However swimming in a lagoon after dark anywhere in the state of Florida is swimming at your own risk to wildlife.

Kid is two years old. He should have been destined for bed. There were signs clearly marked.

It is a tragedy but could have certainly been avoided.

Disney may as well back up the truck for this family. Reports say there were signs posted to not get in the water. But any reasonable person would believe thats a warning regarding swimming; not being eaten.

No way a corporation of that size doesnt have a duty to monitor their grounds for such wildlife; especially on a portion where its built as a beach. Inexcusable.

It seems ridiculous when companies label or disclaim any scenario but they have to when we live in a world with many walking around with a hand out .

Being young and believing you're invincible can backfire , you can't make up "f*** that gator" and then boom .

I captured one of those in the woods when I was a kid and kept it as a pet in an old chicken wire hutch until it 'escaped.' (You don't think my parents would have...no, they couldn't have...) What kind of a dumb-*** nerd was I? But the damn thing was entertaining. It behaved exactly as advertised.

Hog noses are mildly venomous. They are back fanged however. There are documented allergic reactions.

Ran into one in the woods once that hissed as loud as an air compressor.
