I completely agree but as long as most of our lineups are filled w OAD our defense won't be elite like it was in the past. Should be a fun offensive year though.

I have to agree on the lack of correlation from OAD"s to TRULY ELITE DUKE DEFENSE... I dont know how stats breakdown since we adjusted our recruiting philosophy, but I venture to say we dont play D w/the PASSION the Wojo and Battier led teams got into the grills of opposing teams.

Don't know if I can agree with the statement about lack of passion.JMO but think it it takes more than one year to learn how to play together and learn the both the strengths and the weaknesses of your teamates

Team chemistry certainly gets better after a few years together. Jeez just look at the Spurs 20+ year run. We're going to be starting over in terms of team culture when K hangs it up.

It certainly takes time, the right mentality and commitment...usually things that freshmen don't come in with, especially in today's game that is so me centric and offense offense offense. Most kids don't have a clue how to play proper defense one on one let alone in any type of structured system.

I don't think our recruiting philosophy has changed. I think the environment has changed. Kids who would never have left even as soon as ten years ago are leaving after a year.

Yes it's tough because so much is expected of these kids so soon. Grant Hill joined a loaded experienced team and could pick his spots and did not have to be
the man from day one. Different times. We've discussed it but kids are not willing to wait their turn anymore. And if kids hear even a rumor of them being in the first round they are gone it seems. That's why I'm hoping that OC Vrank, Big D and the two Jordans will change this. But guys have to stick around and I'm hoping they will. :)

The majority of our OAD's and most OAD's at all schools do not have the passion to play D because AAU ball has become SO DOMINANT in today's basketball culture. Its all about an Offensive Showcase! It reinforces a philosophy in kids that they can get by with such a style at the collegiate level for a year (possibly two in some cases) before they go to The League. OFC

That's exactly right. It takes most freshman whether they are 5 stars or not 2 to 3 years after coming out of high school to learn to play D. OFC

I don't like comparing ourselves to others but uk has been very young over the years and have played great defense Most of the time. Why is that and why has duke struggled? Is k defense much harder to learn? Does k not emphasize like he had in past?

That's because the kids right out of high school have no clue to what defense is. They play look out defense . In other words the yell "lookout he got by me. " OFC

I don't disagree younger players are not ready to d up to the level a coach would want. But what is duke doing different than some of the younger teams out there that play much better defense. I don't know but others who understand basketball better than I might know. Defense has been bad for awhile now and there's more to it than youth if you look at the results of other young teams.

I agree. I don't think our recruiting philosophy has changed. We have ALWAYS went after top notch, highly sought after players haven't we? Players who could have left early but didn't. Now, those same players leave. Some of our better recruits from the 90's and 2000's who stayed 3 or 4 years, would likely leave now. I hate the OAD thing, but...if my son were a player that would be a lottery pick after the first year, I know what my advice would be....thank coach for everything he's done for you as you walk out!

Just gor sake of talking points, how many of the starters on 2010 you think could have left after one year? Kyle and Lance have carved out a nice niche for themselves, but no way were they ready for NBA EARLY in their careers. (I think Kyle considered after his jr yr jumping). Zoobs didnt blossom til 2nd half of his sr year, and Nolan and Scheyer were excellent COLLEGE guards. (Scheyer may have had a nice career if not for a serious eye injury). JMO.....

Talking different things here. Players in general that could have gone ten years ago would have stayed, now they would go. Those guys the only one even remotely close to having the chance to go would have been Kyle. Additionally, much like unc now, we were not landing OAD kids- we tried to get Wall and others. Luckily Kyrie broke the trend for us.

Thats what I mean, our recruiting philosophy has changed in sense NONE of those guys were OADs.....We tend to go after the KYRIE and JABARI guys more now- the guys who can potentially transcend a team when they take floor immediately. Nothing wrong with that, just an adjustment by Coach K and his staff to the times.

Right I'm saying nothing changed though, we are just landing them. We recruited OADs the whole time. We just didn't land them. We recruited KD, Brandan Wright, Spencer Hawes, John Wall, Kevin Love, Harrison Barnes (who should have been OAD), etc. it wasn't until we landed Kyrie that we were able to reel them in. Maybe you're saying that we go after more than one of them per cycle, perhaps true but honestly we've recruited more than one plenty of times and only landed a single OAD, in plenty of cases.

Yes definitely, and as a DUKE follower forever I realize your point- Shaun Livingston too who went straight to NBA. I AM SAYING we definitely do go after MORE NOW, and I think K and staff would concede so....As I say nothing wrong w/it- you just do not see the VINTAGE DUKE D as frequently...OFC
