I fully expect for Surber to be the guy FYI. I'm just not super high on him being able to score many points at NCAAs. Love the kid so I would be ecstatic to be dead wrong.

The good news is we are going to see where he stacks up pretty quickly. He is going to hit a lot of guys ranked ahead of him to start the season.

I'm just interested to see how he will hold up health wise. If he can't go will they throw Cody out there or are would they be hell bent on redshirting him.

I don’t think so. I think DT has been pretty clear on wanting to wrestle our best lineup. If Luke is doing well then he’s the guy but I don’t see us shelfing Cody if Luke can’t go

Didn’t surber beat Cardenas at u23s one time in the best of 3? He was really close to making the u23 squad. Looked great at CKLV until injury. I think he continues improving with the skill in the room now as many of you have said…RS Merril give surber the chance and hopefully he stays healthy..

Yes he did and that’s my point… Luke has beat or hung in there with all of the favorites. When healthy, Luke is a damn good wrestler. I just have a feeling that he’s going to stay healthy and shock alot of people this year

I've been a fan of Surber since watching him in high school. Saying that, his health history is lengthy and not favorable for Surber to make it through an entire season. I would hate for this team to lose Surber in February and have to rely on CM going into Nationals with limited experience.

197 is still tough though. Five returning AAs from last years plus a former champ (who no one knows what to expect from). I'm just saying on the list of weights we have a chance to AA at 197 might be our weakest weight. And this is assuming Surber is 100% all year.
49 and 57 are significantly deeper imo.

Freshman are built different these days, if Merrill goes I would expect a lot from him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he AA’d this year if he goes.

Surber and Cardenas also meet at the NCAA tournament in 2023 and it was ugly for the good guy.

Not really arguing about what weight is deeper. I'm just not ready to say a weight that returns 6 AAs from last year plus AJ "cleared out". Yeah it cleared out at the very top but I don't think any of us are arguing Surber is going to be in title contention.

Lets all keep in mind that Surber for the betterment of the team bulked up for 2 years at HWT. Using the term 'bulked up" probably doesn't give justice to the fact that he was still very undersized at HWT and was a terrible fit for him style wise. Then unexpectedly, after the AJ departure, cut down to his natural weight at 197. Then got hurt early on at CKLV and wrestled injured the rest of the season. I don't think we have seen what Surber is truly capable of when fully healthy. He is a strong competitor and shows a lot of heart on the mat. Yes, there are health concerns with him staying healthy, but I would prefer to see him go and Merrill get the RS for future points.

Edit: I just fact check my own memory and it says on wrestlestat that he only wrestled 1 season at HWT. So the 22-23 season was his first at 197 where he went 21-10 and was R16 at NCAA's. Was he healthy this season?

Something to keep in mind. Surber will see Munoz and Novak in Nov duals before he even gets to the CKLV. By Flo's rankings thats #5 and #10 bk to bk. He will be tested right away for sure.
Spratleys going to have a tough opening home weekend. Jore Volk and then Figueroa. If he can beat at least one of them that will be a good sign.

I talked to Surber a few days ago. He's excited, kept a lot of things close to the vest. Said we are really going to enjoy the fan experience.

No real breaking news - expecting to see a line-up close to this for the opener:

125: Spratley
133: Witcraft
141: Jamison or Hughes
149: Jamison or Young
157: Travis
165: Amine
174: Hamiti
184: Plott
197: Merrill or Surber
285: Captain America

Gonna suck if one of those at 141-149 doesn't see the mat.

I love Witcraft but I wish/hope Hughes gets down to 133lbs. That would make a better lineup, imo

There are a few different things going on which will be interesting to see how they play out. We won’t know for sure till 11/15.

Interestingly, the Roster has been updated and Hughes is listed as 133 only and Jamison 141 only. It’s all going to work itself out.

Sounds like:
125: Spratpin
133: Huughes
141: Jamison
149: Young
157: Travis
165: Amine
174: Hamiti
184: Plott
197: Surber
285: Pindrickson

I like the bookends! :)

Hopefully Hughes can make the CKLV. There's only a handful of duals where he will see a ranked guy. If he misses some of those and doesn't hit the CKLV he won't be real tested by NCAAs. The B12 only has one ranked wrestler in the top 10 at 133. Frost from ISU.

I think he does and I think he wrestles most the season.

Im guessing around a dozen matches before B12's?

It seems 133 to 149 is the only murky part of the lineup. Possibly 197 but that obviously is going to be one guy or another, with Merrill holding a redshirt.

Another interesting scenario, if Hughes can't make 133 and will opt to challenge 141 instead, could McComas be the guy? In his interview in the summer, he said he's about 148 in the summer but added he could cut to 125 if he really needed to lol. To be honest, if Hughes can't make 133 comfortably for a season and McComas is clearly ahead of Witcraft, it probably makes sense. Redshirting if anything can create a jam later with everyone DT is bringing in there.

This is a great analysis but cmon man if you're going to be an OSU fan on an OSU fan board you have to lose the PSU logo lol
