What are the rules for jersey #'s in the NFL? I always thought there were set #'s for positions with the exception of WR/TE because of theamount of players on the roster for those respective positions. I am guessing if all the LBs take up all the LB #s they fall to the 40's?

QB: 1-19
WR: 10-19, 80-89
RB: 20-39
FB: 40-49 (Where Chaney Falls)
LB: 50-59
etc, etc...

Position(s) Primary Alternate
QB, P, K 1-19
RB, DB 20-49
C 50-59 60-79
G, T 60-79
WR 80-89 10-19
TE 80-89
DL (NT/DT/DE) 60-79 90-99
LB 50-59 90-99

I could've sworn that LBs could wear in the 40s. Not sure how Chaney would get 49. Maybe the roster is full enough right now and they'll have to switch him later.

ETA: Here is a footnote:
During the preseason period when rosters are larger, the League will allow duplication and other temporary deviations from the numbering scheme specified above, but the rule must be adhered to for all players during the regular season and postseason. Clubs must make numbers available to adhere to the rule, even if it requires putting back into circulation a number that has been retired or withheld for other reasons. See 7-2-3 for reporting change of position. (Note 2)

In other words, he'll have his number changed before the season starts. Here is the site I'm finding this on: http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/index.nsf/Documents/0-jers-nums

92 and 99 are retired, Reggie White and Jerome Brown,so that's two less for him to wear already...Makes sense.

if necessary. I'll bet they make enough cuts through training camp that it's not a problem. Those rules are pretty strict though.

It's probably a good thing too, even though it's something so minor, sets a precedent for who is in charge.
