Especially the ones that said to paraphrase- "If I had a knee injury, I wouldn't be standing on the sidelines".

No. Like MJD said, "All I'm saying is that he can finish the game on a hurt knee... I played the whole season on one..."

Phillip Rivers played most of a conference title game against the Colts with a torn ACL. I've seen no official word that Cutler had a torn MCL, but even if he did, he should have played.

And as for Urlacher, he's still looking for his jock after Brandon Jackson broke his kankles for him.

According to Wikipedia...

In the 2007 AFC Championship Game, Rivers' was lauded by his teammates and the press for playing the entire game with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, which later required surgery and was ranked among the NFL Top 10 Gutsiest Performances.[13][14] Chris Harry of the Orlando Sentinel said "I don't think anyone will ever accuse Philip Rivers of being soft."[13] Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune said, "To go out there and put his knee, and ultimately his career, on the line. It has to go down as one of the gutsiest performances."[13]

Even if he couldn't go or would hurt the team, he still could have been involved. Every time they showed him, he was sitting there doing nothing while the 3rd string qb was trying to read the overhead photos. Cutler could have put a headset on or tried to help the 3rd string guy with advice and knowledge of their defense and coverage but he just sat there. That was the most baffling thing to me. It looked like he just didn't give a ****.

a greater than 50% chance the partial tear becomes a complete one.

No NFL player gets paid to take that kind of risk with their career.

plus, he probably wouldn't throw that accurately anyway on a hurt knee. If I'm the coach, even if i don't care about his health, i don't put him back in. I'd want the known variable (the backup). If Cutler came back in and threw two picks, the same clowns would be cussing the coach for not using the backup.

It seems like ACL surgery and rehab is pretty good now, but I wonder how good it is for MCLs? I'm just wondering if the doctors were saying that if Cutler went back out there and hurt his knee further (and factoring in the likelihood of further injury), his career would pretty much be over, no matter how much or little pain he was having. Just saying that Rivers could have been playing on a knee whose injury could not get much worse and could be repaired with a high probability of success whereas Cutler's injury could have gotten far worse with little chance of recovery. I'd love to hear a sports medicine or orthopedic specialist's take on this. <div>
</div><div>By the way, Rivers came out of the game in which he hurt his knee. I suppose if SD lost that game then Rivers would have faced the same scrutiny Cutler is getting now. Had Chicago ended up winning Cutler might have a chance of getting surgery and giving a gutsy Super Bowl performance. Oh well.</div><div>

Howdid theJags end up this year? How did the Chargers end up in 2007? I know you've probably never been injured because frankly, chess and go fisharen'tthat dangerous. Doesn't surprise me you jump in on this topic since you are a habitual bandwaggon jumper.

And even though I wanted to go back out there, the trainers said no due to my knee bending sideways. I was able to play the next week with a brace, but an on the field decision without a DR checking it out, is just too risky. Although I'm sure the Bears employ doctors on the sidelines.

and you guys were in the NFC championship game and getting paid $50 million (much of which is guaranteed) over a 5 year period when you got your respective injuries too I suppose...

Seriously, Cutler needs to grow a sack. Unless he had a fully torn tendon, and he couldn't plant on it without collapsing, he should've been in the game.

I heard something before the game saying Cutler stood the most to lose in that particular game, because the Bears brought him in specifically to fix the QB problem. If he failed, he was going to get it harder than anyone else.

Not only did he fail, but he looks like he quit on his team. He better have a very serious injury come up or he's going to get killed for it. We're talking about Chicago here, the Midwest. It's a blue collar fanbase, and I don't know that any of the fans are going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

ETA: This is a franchise defined by Dick Butkus, Mike Singletary, and Mike Ditka, among others (Payton, Sayers, Halas). Point being, their fans are used to tough players and that mentality. I just can't imagine this ever sitting well with them. Cutler was already disliked by the Broncos fans I believe, and I think he may be in a situation now where he needs to find a new home again.

No, I played for Oak Grove before they were relevant. But not going back out wasn't my choice...I'm sure Doctors have the last say on professional teams as well.

And that's why Cutler has an automatic out, and he has taken it. But I would imagine that Philip Rivers didn't get an "all-clear" report when he had a week to think on it and still went out there with a torn ACL and MCL and played. I personally can't stand Rivers, but I respect him. I can't stand Cutler nor do I respect him, and neither do most of the players in the NFL at this point. Give me Orton before Cutler. Least I know we'll go down guns blazin.<div>
</div><div>I'd love to see Cutler playing for the Jets. Bart Scott would have whipped his *** right there on the sidelines.

He has missed ONE game in his entire career (and that was with a mandated concussion). He took some shots while at Vandy and with the Bears.

Again, to question what you would/wouldn't do in that situation is crazy. I don't think he just went "nah, I think I will just sit this one out and not risk my paycheck". Hell, why would he ever set foot on the field again?

I don't know all the facts therefore, i'm not going to bash a guy who as you said has took a beating throughout his career and still only missed 1 game. Which was mandatory.

Injuries seem to be one of the weirdest aspects of them. Intensely painful ones can be worked through and there may not be anything seriously wrong, such as a broken finger. People can break their necks in car wrecks and have no realization of it until they are walking away and collapse from damaging their spinal cords. I remember people calling Colt McCoy a puss because he didn't come back into a game after he got an injury that didn't even cause any pain but caused him to lose feeling in the arm. The guy couldn't throw because so much of mechanical motion is determined by feedback (try drinking a cup of water after getting a Novocaine shot at the dentist office. You don't drool because you can't move your lip, but because your brain doesn't realize your lip is hanging open). With Cutler, it was likely that another hit on a partially torn MCL could have resulted in something far worse than a fully torn ACL, namely a fully torn MCL and a fully torn ACL. The doctor's weren't going to let him back out there until they knew exactly what it was and treated it, and that wouldn't happen until after the game. Even Philip Rivers came out of the game after he got that injury several years ago. We all hear about how he went out the next weekend, but he still left the game with an injury when the outcome of the game was still in doubt.

this thread should be renamed "the super-gay cutler apologist thread." he went back out on the field after halftime. period. if he was a man, he'd have stayed on the field. but he's not. he's an uber-talented spoiled brat with no nuts. and it's apparent to most red-blooded americans, which is why it's all over the news. and now he's crying about it, which makes it worse. cry about certain things and you get a pass, but cry about how everyone of your contemporaries thinks you're a _ussy and you confirm that you are in fact a _ussy.

and don't confuse this issue. rivers had a torn ACL. cutler has a sprained MCL that won't require surgery, although he'll probably get surgery to try and avoid the complete unveiling of his womaness.

I can guarantee you this: cutler throws a 75 yard TD on that first drive after the half and he's back in there for the next series.
