And the defense held Ballard and Conner to 20 yards rushing on 12 carries...this is definitely the most undecided position to watch in spring practice. The early numbers ain't good.

After a pair of three-and-outs forced by the two defensive units to start the day, the first offense got on the board with a 62-yard Chris Relf run. Relf pulled the ball on an option read play and took it around the right end, showing breakaway speed as he raced to the endzone. On the next possession, the Tyler Russell-led second offense put together a nine-play, 65-yard drive capped by a Russell 34-yard touchdown pass to LaDarius Perkins

Relf is running the first offense...Russell's stats are against our 2nd defense

on the ground as long as we can run the ball effectively. Sounds like Relf didn't have much trouble running it.

Relf hit a 60 yard bomb to Bumphis in stride for a TD. Both played well today, and both threw a couple INTs, all off tips, as has been the case all spring so far. I don't know why everyone feels the need to hype Russell and dog Relf. Both of them are going to play and play a lot this season.

as a whole quarter per game this season...but as I have said repeatedly- we will get more big plays in the passing game with Relf- for example the 60 yard TD he threw to Bumphis today...

Relf is going to get 3/4 of the snaps this season

and the option pass Lee never could throw far enough will probably look good too- he just has to get the mid-range throws looking better....

I have no doubts Russell will end up being the better passer. People just need to be patient, let him mature, get some playing time next year for experience, and develop into the best QB he can be.

We have coaches that are actually developing QB's now...no need to rush someone who isnt ready for SEC speed defenses yet

Relf is the better runner and probably gets more early snaps but he didnt pass very well in games last year, game against Mississippi inluded. Hope both do well as I think it makes it much harder to game plan us. Perkins had the fastest time in the 100 and 200 meters in the state his sr year I think, looking forward to see him.
Any word on Marcus Green and how he's doing this spring

When does relf make the transition to tight end or whatever your projection was for him last year.

a good bit better. If we have to throw the ball, I think Tyler will definitely be in there. I could see the snaps being close to 50/50 unless Relf is running the offense like he did against UM.

we sign Cam Newton- which was what the staff was basing that idea on

what about the fact TR hasn't or can't secure the starting roll. Hence to be the backup for a Newton.???????????????????

We have a highly rated QB come in- be it Fant or Todd Jordan, or whoever, and then it's "Hey! Let's burn his RS and see what we've got! I hear this guy is the real deal, so he can play right now. I mean, playing against Madison Central's defense is just a notch below a Nick Saban led Alabama defense, right?" Heck, I remember people clamoring for Tyson Lee- a freaking walk-on- to start.

And then as soon as the guy throws an incompletion, it's "We need to switch him to WR and let the next real deal see what he can do."

It's a vicious cycle.

You are absolutely right about Russell. There is no reason to not let him develop when we have a functional QB in Relf. Unless we have a special Peyton Manning type of QB or we are just in a horrible situation as far as injuries, we should never play a freshman QB (true or RS) unless it is in a back-up role. Dan did the right thing in RS Tyler Russell. Especially when we have so many unproven WR's. We need to let Russell be a back-up for two years and then let him start as a junior. And I don't see us getting a Peyton Manning any time soon, although I would love to have one.

The thing that the Tyler Russell fans need to realize is that what we are doing for him right now is going to benefit him and MSU more in the long run as opposed to throwing him to the wolves and shattering his confidence.

the thinking was Newton was going to start if he signed, Russell would back him up- but Relf was too good to stand around on the sidelines and they were batting around ideas on how to get him on the field...

instead of being smartass- just ask the question to get your answer

and Relf go against the 2nd D and see what the numbers are before annointing Russell the better passer? While I wont be shocked in the least if he is, let's remember he was going against a lesser group of players to amass those numbers today

But you have to realize a lot of are cautious about him considering he couldn't beat out Lee last year for PT except for the 2nd half of the Arky game and the Egg Bowl. If he has improved his throws and can be a servicable QB for us then I am more than happy with him there considering that all we need is a few throws a game. I certainly don't think Russell is the savior either and I'm fine with him sitting for a few years...hell Eli Manning sat for a while and that's because OM had a good option in front of him. Relf may not be as good as Miller was but then again we don't need him to be.

He was kind of in the dog house for a lot of the year last year. He got suspended for a couple of games, and after that he started to turn it around during the Kentucky game.

That was a big reason why he couldn't beat out Lee.

Mullen seemed to think Russell had the better day. Unless Relf has changed he seemed to look at his deep option, the RB, or just run with it. A lot of times if he can complete those passes, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Numerous people thought last year unless Relf improved a lot in his passing ability that he would not see more than a few series a game. Everyone except UM caught on to how to defend him after a few plays, I don't know if we could be very successful just using him at QB for most of the time. Again, if he can complete the normal throws, I don't think Russell beats him out. I just don't know if he can complete even 50% over the course of a normal game. If he can't do that, we probably can't win with him unless we are running about 70% of the time and being successful doing it.
