In 12 years, only two teams - Kentucky and Florida - have won more games than we have in the SEC. And those are the only schools that have won more conference championships and conference tournament championships.

especially this:

Q: Why have you stayed at Mississippi State for so long?

A: This is my 20th year [eight as an assistant and 12 as a head coach]. All the time you see people jump for jobs or other situations where you'll make more money. But this is a good fit for me. We can win and compete for championships here. Starkville is a great college town. We have beautiful facilities and a great campus. For eight years in a row, every ticket has been sold by the time we play our first game.

We're competing for championships. It's a great college town, we're selling out every game and it's a great place to raise a family. A bad traffic day in Starkville is a 10-minute drive anywhere. We live seven miles from campus. If you're a Mississippi kid, there's no reason to leave. You've got the perfect place to play right here in the country.

We traveled to South Padre in November for five or six days. He can't travel with us, so at Thanksgiving he added 12 pounds.
edit to add: this brings up an issue that i always have with these guys that are supposedly destined for the NBA but have trouble getting eligible. if you were 18 to 19 years old and supposedly knew (or at least believed) that you were going to be drafted in the NBA for millions of dollars in about 8 months, would you even consider letting yourself get out of shape?

A visit to the UK board revealed several posts about what a good job Stansbury has done at MSU and how under-rated he is. Basically every season Kentucky fans know that there will be 3 teams that will be competing with them for the SEC......Florida, UT, and State. Even though we have not been to a Sweet 16, we have been the most steady and stable program in the SEC over the last decade with maybe the exception of Florida. UT and UK have been though 3 coaches each in the last 10 years.

Like Stans said in the article, "he's never been held accountable." I don't know what kind of kid Sidney is, if he's spoiled or a brat, but it seems that he has been pretty nonchalant about most things. I remember reading an interview with Sidney when we were talking about signing him and I think the whole time when the guy was trying to interview him, or at least when he was in the room with him, Sidney just starred at his cell phone and kept his head down and barely said a word. I got the gist from the interview that Sidney was basically just a giant kid who hasn't really grown up yet.

i wouldn't have worked hard for the chance at millions. maybe i like money more than the next guy. maybe it's because i grew in a ghetto similar to DS's old neighborhood.

I would be working out to the point where I could take Schwarzenegger, Van Damme, and Segal all at the same time. That is what kind of blows my mind, is that the kid has the chance to make millions in the NBA but decides to eat his weight in turkey over Thanksgiving. Seriously, 12 pounds. I honestly didn't think a person could gain 12 pounds over the course of a weekend.

how in the hell he has kept Robert Kirby on his staff for so long. He is the grease that turns the wheel.

I doubt this board is a fair slice of reality as far as what most MSU fans think of Rick Stansbury. Most of the arguments about him here are just for the sake of arguing fueled by a few internet personalities that will blindly defend or blindly tear down no matter what. I'm sure the masses are very supportive and happy with Rick.

Plus, who really cares if UK compliments somebody anyhow? It's easy to compliment a coach when you are sitting on top. We post no threat to UK's way of life - especially from the Western Division. They will say nice things about anybody as long as we aren't a threat to dethrone them as the Kings of SEC basketball. I'm sure they have terrible things to say about Bruce Pearl and Billy Donovan since they are divisional opponents. I'd say those are high-quality coaches.

You do realize we have won 3 straight against UK, including hammering them at Rupp last season. UK fans are about a million times more knowledgable about basketball than the average State fan just from having followed it for so long.

Thanks for posting.

Me and my brother were watching the game together, and about half way through the first, he was already screaming "We need a new coach. Stansbury just sucks." We argued for a while. Unfortunately , I end up arguing with someone about this at least once a week during basketball season.

My first year at MSU was the first year we sucked in football. Thank GOD for Rick Stansbury. During my time there, MSU basketball became my favorite thing to do. Never thought it was possible.

While I personally am not a Stans-hater, we had another coach that opposing fans were very complimentary of...
