just watched the sports on WLOX 13 (Biloxi) and they showed clip of J. Powe at pro day. They showed him do vertical jump where you hit the little sticks with your hand, the trainer didnt have to readjust the sticks after his attempt because he didnt event touch them. hopefully WLOX will post video on website soon.

He was convinced by Orgeron, who some called the best recruiter in the country at the time, to sign with OM. After that, all Powe ever did was what he was told. He could have quit on numerous occasions. Hell, most kids would have. But he persevered through difficult circumstances.

I just don't see how this should draw the ire of SPS. Now if you want to go after Orgeron or anyone else at OM you think broke some rule to get him eligible then have at it. But that shouldn't reflect badly on Powe. None at all.

I doubt many people here actually hate him. I'm sure most here hate to see him go after the past two seasons.

Your post is exactly the kind I'm talking about. Why attack him for what other people either did or said? All he did was overcome all the obstacles in front of him. The biggest of which was the NCAA, who we all hate.

I seriously don't think that many people really hate him at all. I don't. But it is fun as hell to laugh at him and I do enjoy that. And you gotta admit that for ANYBODY to not even reach the first bar on the vertical jump is funny as hell.

Personally, I think he got a little bit of a raw deal from the NCAA. Of course I think schools should be able to sign as many non-qualifiers as they want and if they make the grade after one year in school let them play. But I'll never understand why he didn't just go to JCJC for 2 years then transfer to UM for his last 2 years. As it wound up, he only got 3 at UM anyway and the first one was half wasted because he hadn't played in3 years.

Edit: Actually,I can think of one reason not to go to JCJC for2 years. If he didn't think he could graduate from junior college then he wouldn't have been eligible to transfer.

I mean he's lost millions after not going pro earlier. He showed a good bit of potential early on, but I don't remember hearing his name being called all last year.

It's because at 99% of the D-I schools in America, he would and should have had to go to JUCO first.

And then to TRY to paint him as this guy who "perseveres"- yeah, it's more like his lawyer persevered.

It's no different than Ole Miss fans making fun of Dontae Jones or Pig Prather.

I mean, it's not like he's the first piece of crap player I've made fun of on here like Clayton Moore or anything.

He came out of high school, I think, the number two defensive lineman in the country. He may have been number one on some sites. But, either way, he signed with your rival. That put a huge bullet mark on his back. Everything else kind of fell into place, I suppose.

I do agree that not reaching the first bar is somewhat comical.

...and made fun of The Mississippi State University for their football players being dummies. Then, you bring someone to campus who could barely read, what'd you expect?

Since Powe is gone, we'll just have to be content with calling CJ Johnson the DD Lewis of Ole Miss- a player who makes 15-20 tackles a game for a team that wins 1-2 games a year.

Why the rebs hate Smoot? After Tubberville jilted the rebs, the next year Smoot spent the MSU - Auburn game trashing talking Tubberville all through the game. Smoot called Tubberville a liar, said he wasn't loyal, shouted to Auburn players that they could trust their new coach, etc. One would have thought thereb nation would have appreciated it, but noooooo. Smoot gotmucho hate from message boards.

Back to Powe. The whole thing seems have been afarce. If theUniversity of Mississippi cantake someone from illiteracy tothe ability to do college level work in three years, then this state can save a butt-load of cash by shavingnine years off the the primary-middle-high schoolsystem. Also,when theassistance VP bragged on Powe in the CL puff-piece last fall by saying the senior Powe "actually goes to class" was she saying your other senior players don't attend class?</p>

someone who couldn't have qualified for my high school and couldn't read got a free ride at a college just because he was unusually large and could tackle people (not named Chris Relf). Someone who was illiterate now has a free education, meanwhile, 10 years later I'm still paying on my student loans after finishing in the top 5 of my High School Class, Scoring a 30 on my ACT, and graduating in engineering with a 3.6 gpa. Therefore, as far as I'm concerned, he can take all the flack in the world in return for having everything handed to him.

Now, I think it's great that football affords some people who would never otherwise have the opportunity a chance to get a college degree. However, most football players major in PE, basket weaving, or some other useless degree....and most of them don't even earn that (they either don't finish, or have people doing most of their work for them). I also agree with Pat that if someone can make the grade, they should be allowed to continue in college no matter what their high school transcript looked like. But, I seriously doubt that an illeterate actually made the grades for himself at The Harvard of the South.

and all they did was give relentless effort. No more hate for Powe than for our own team members.

The guy could not read out of High School, was in Special Ed. He rode the short bus and your lawyer buddies at TSUN got him in school and on the field at VH.
If he had not been a great DL prospect, there is no way in hell that he would have gotten into any 4 year college, Period. Plus he is a fat-***.......

I laughed when Powe was quoted as saying the reason he had a bad season this year was because of all the double teams. Well, if he does make an NFL roster, he will probably not receive as many double teams......because one blocker will probably be more than enough to get the job done. Suh was double teamed all through college, but still dominated. Also, by the team the owners and players reach a CBA, Powe will be close to 30 years old.

I am not the least bit concerned with the Black Bears next year. Powe, and a bunch of other seniors, are gone from what statistically was the worst defense in the history of Ole Miss' program. They are going to be rolling out a bunch ofredshirt freshmens (that couldnt beat out theircrappy starters last year)and JUCOs.

I predict that dam of a DL will be leaking like a 17ing sive by the time the Cougars show up in Lafayett Co.

After 4 years of high school, a year at Hargrave, and a year or two of PAID private tutors and thousands of dollars of BYU online courses, he still couldn't qualify.

Of course, Powe also had a 'guardian' who was not his parent. If MSU or State boosters attempted to help our recruits the same way that Powe and Oher were helped, we'd get put on probation.

Oher was the same way--he replaced years of failing grades with hours of BYU online courses, again paid for a 'guardian'. Sean Tuohy laughingly called it "The Great Mormon Grade Grab". If the NCAA is going to allow Oher and Powe to play for Ole Miss, then the the NCAA should not have any eligibility requirements. Meanwhile, State has recruits who are ruled ineligible and don't get to
play for the Maroon and White. Some of them are now out of football.
What about their stories?

It's pretty obvious that all the adults in Powes life have seen his physical abilities as a meal ticket to further their own dreams and hopes without giving much of a **** about him. Mama wants him to play in the NFL so the family can get out of their economic situation. She obviously didn't care about academics. His high school coaches only saw a big kid who can play football and win some games for them, they didn't give a **** whether he could read or write. Orgeron saw the same. And the rank and file sanctimonious ole miss fans fed anybody who'd listen this huge line of crap about how 'We're just trying to help some poor underprivileged kid'. ********! Y'all just wanted to win some football games and he was one of the folks who could help you do that. He'd better hope he makes some NFL team roster because that is his only hope for a decent job. IF he gets some sort of degree from ole miss it will be a singularly worthless piece of paper, nothing more than a fancy wall hanging.

You ole miss fans have taken a lot of shots at some of our player who were less than stellar in the academic department now it's time to man up and take it back. Not only have you become that which you made fun of, you went to even lower depths to get there.

Harvard of the south my ***. You think the real Harvard of the northwould have even given Powe the time of day much less a scholarship?
