But they shouldn't put up as much of a fight as App State or Detroit. We have a chance to be 9-0 when we head off on our voyage.

Detroit is a good win and mccallum is very impressive as a freshman. Detroit was picked to finish second in their league behind Butler.

He is coming along very well. He was our best big man tonight. Kodi had a very off game; could tell that he was pouting from not getting enough touches on offense. That one where he drove down the court and created an offensive charge at the end was horrible. Never know which Kodi is going to show up?

Ravern must be our first, second, and third option when he is on fire like he was tonight. The dunk +1 was awesome. Maybe Ravern is coming into hisown finally. For the first threeyearshe would disappear after receiving a hard foul.TonightDetroit's Jarvis impersonator fouled the **** out of Ravern and a few minutes later Ravern dunked all over someone. Way to hang in there.

Benock played solid D (Hamnu!) and Beckham was servicable; lots of good assists. Was surprised the opposing team pressed Bryant and not Beckham?

That seemed to be a pretty decent team, even scoring well distributed throughout the lineup. Two good wins over the last two games. Pretty decent level of play for early.

Adding Dee is going to take this team to a whole other level. Sidney might provide some drama and Kodi will pout with fewer minutes, but we should certainly have established some good depth by then. Go dogs.

Some of you guys don't know how big the wins against Appalachain State and Detroit are. They are both quality wins and will be RPI 100 wins. Both teams are picked 2nd in their conference and wouldn't surprise me if they won it. App State has 2 great guards who can score, and Detroit is just going to get better as the season goes along.

If we can find a way to start off 9-0 we may be set up for a good season with the SEC west as weak as ever.

1. Kodi fades in the 2nd half. He looks tired. He also takes shots when the game is on the line when he shouldn't. Tonight he took 3 3's in the last 3 or 4 minutes and missed them all, had 2 turnovers trying to force things, let Detroit get some easy put backs and rebounds because he just wasn't aware of where his man was. He did hit a couple of big shots early, but then nothing.
2. Bryant will take over Beckhams minutes before Dee gets back. At least he will if he can start hitting ft's. He is just more agressive on the drive and seems to have a clue on running the "offense".
3. I like Steele's effort on defense, he plays with more energy on the defensive end of the floor than anybody when he is out there.
4. For some reason we just don't get the ball to Ravern at the end of games. Not sure why.
5. Lewis will take Bailey's spot if Elgin doesn't get his *** in gear. He still has a long way to go.

In the words of Mathew McConnahey as the Marshall coach (I have no idea if I spelled that right, and I'm not gonna look it up because that would make me feel kind of icky) "there's a first time for everything"

Speaking of Marshall, they still have the best team name in college sports. The Thundering Herd. Who can top that?

Is he still just going to be a 'project' all season long? Why is it most 7 foot + players are so slow?
I want a 7'2" giant that is aggressive in the paint. Tell him they stole his McDonald's french fries. Show him a pic of his momma with the opposing teams center. Hell, hit him between the eyes with a wooden spoon 100 times before gametime.Whatever it takes to get him jacked up and in command under the bucket.

against Troy and some of the other easier games in the preSEC-season. We will need him to provide some minutes during our 4 game stretch before the exhibition game where Sidney returns. I expect that he will get better as the year progresses but other than sparks of decent play here and there I don't expect alot out of him this year.

What actually happened, for those of you like prairiedawg who didn't watch the game, is that in the entire second half Kodi took two threes. One of them was in the last four minutes. Now, did Kodi play well? No. He did give us 30 valuable minutes, and even his presence on the floor is better than more minutes for Lewis or Bailey. He didn't shoot it well, turned it over too much and forced a couple of things. But he also grabbed nine rebounds and hit two free throws with 28 seconds left to push our lead back to five. Two misses there and we were in deep trouble.

The last five minutes of that game were a microcosm of the Stansbury era. Let's examine.

4:56 Benock hits a three to push the lead to 12. We were in the midst of some of our best all around play of the night. Active on offense, getting by on defense.

4:27 The miss another three and Beckham gets fouled. He misses the FT and we don't pick up Calliste in transition. He nails the three to cut it to 9. Then we went into the famous Stansbury stall.

3:49 Twanny heaves a desperation three from the top of the key. Doesn't draw iron. Shot clock violation and media timeout.

3:35 Out of the break Calliste drives the lane for a nearly uncontested layup. Our 12 point lead is now 7 due to a missed FT and a terrible possession.

3:10 Kodi misses a three from the left wing as the shot clock hits 10. It was a bad decision. Period. It was also the best shot we took in the last five minutes.

2:48 Detroit misses.

2:25 Steele fires a three from the corner with a guy closing at him. Terrible freshman decision. Plenty of time to work some clock and also look to score. We seem to think you can only do one of those a time.

1:58 Detroit gets a bucket and our lead is now 5. Every Bulldog fan alive starts thinking, "Here we go again."

1:23 Ravern misses a heave from about midcourt. Notice that there is a 35 second gap between their bucket and our shot. This is the kind of look you get in our stall offense.

1:14 Calliste drives and hits another layup, and now our comfortable 12 point margin is down to 3 because we tried to run clock and took terrible shots (all threes) while Detroit went to the rim. Oh by the way, Kodi fouled on this layup but Calliste missed the FT, thank goodness.

0:42 Bryant finds himself with the ball at about half court as the shot clock winds down yet again, so it's his turn to launch a guarded 22 foot three. He misses of course.

0:37 Detroit, again going to the rim, gets fouled on the floor and goes to the line to try and score with the clock stopped. Thankfully, again, they miss the front end of the 1 and 1. This was their chance to cut it to 1.

0:28 Kodi hits two FTs to push it back to 5. Huge, huge swing in the game with their misses and Kodi's makes.

0:21 Detroit scored. Guess how. Layup. Back to a 3 pt game.

0:19 Bryant hits 1 of 2 to get us a 4 point lead. Detroit picked up a free throw right after that but could get no closer.

I don't know why any of this shocks me. We do the same thing every time we have a lead. We lose our aggressiveness and try to run the clock out. Against a more quality opponent, that is not going to work. You would think the two UK losses from last year would have taught our staff a lesson, but they seem to have forgotten that already.

Glad we won, but I don't feel like last night was much of a step forward for the team.

I have no such expectation. It's painful to watch the guy even try to run. I suspect the career of John Riek is coming to a close soon. Maybe December. Maybe March.

Running out the clock is part of basketball. Stansbury isn't the only coach that does it.

When they cut our 8 point lead to 2 with 14:00 left in the second half, was Stansbury stalling then also? No, teams are going to make runs.

If you look at the first half, we were trailing at the 14 minute mark. What this tells me is that their starting 5 was slightly better than ours, but we had a deeper bench than them. At the end of the game, when their starting 5 was out there, they made another run.

If Stansbury was the only coach in America that went deep into the shotclock when protecting a lead, I would say that you may have a point. Perhaps he needs to get more creative in terms of the play that is ran with 10 seconds left on the shot clock; but running clock was definitely the right call.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to make a game yet, and the first one I make will probably be Belhaven here in Jackson, but I'm ok with starting 3-0, even if they are wins that we were expected to win.

As the season moves forward, I feel like we are only going to improve, and with the addition of Sidney and Dee, things are looking up.

Someone might could answer this who was at these game, but has Shaun Smith got any playing time yet?

On another note, I wish we would be able to see Sidney, Ravern, Hood, Deville Smith and Dee all together...beast of a team.

back into the game with us when we had them essentially put away. Its just amazing that Stans thinks it can be good strategy to go into a stall with sometimes as much as 8 or 9 minutes to play. I guess he thinks the other team is going to quit trying to score.

Running the clock down in basketball to protect a lead is like playing a prevent defense in football to protect a lead. It prevents wins. And Stans goes into that non-offense way too early and we run the clock down way too far and wind up taking terrible last-second shots. I'm all for milking the clock with a lead, but you've still got to try to score. Stans just shuts the offense down completely and it gets him into trouble sometimes. I think Stans is a very underrated coach, but that is one fault he definitely has.

It all comes back to Stans inability to install and run a real offense. You would think we could do something besides the stand and shoot, at least half of our shots were not from downtown. He had a chance to hire a good offensive assistant, instead we get George Brooks and sign Hood(not a bad thing).. I can't wait for the RSS to come in and run the show until Bost gets back...

I know their 2nd string kicker wasn't very good, but even for him that was a makable FG at the end to take it into overtime. We should have had that game won by early in the 4th quarter and instead it took a luck break for us to win.

He has done that for years and many many times it has let the other team back in the game. The strategy works if you have some sort of play or a specific player to get in there and score as the clock winds down but we just run around and heave some awful shot when the shot clock expires.

Let's hope the RSS will be even better... Stans teams are so much better when there is a play-maker, it hides his lack of offensive coaching.

Agreed. Right now I don't think you can say that about anyone that is playing except maybe Ravern but his ball handling is atrocious. Bost and Sidney can both hopefully fill that role.
