1. Kodi fades in the 2nd half. He looks tired. He also takes shots
when the game is on the line when he shouldn't. Tonight he took 3 3's in
the last 3 or 4 minutes and missed them all, had 2 turnovers trying to
force things, let Detroit get some easy put backs and rebounds because
he just wasn't aware of where his man was. He did hit a couple of big
shots early, but then nothing.
What actually happened, for those of you like prairiedawg who didn't watch the game, is that in the entire second half Kodi took two threes. One of them was in the last four minutes. Now, did Kodi play well? No. He did give us 30 valuable minutes, and even his presence on the floor is better than more minutes for Lewis or Bailey. He didn't shoot it well, turned it over too much and forced a couple of things. But he also grabbed nine rebounds and hit two free throws with 28 seconds left to push our lead back to five. Two misses there and we were in deep trouble.
The last five minutes of that game were a microcosm of the Stansbury era. Let's examine.
4:56 Benock hits a three to push the lead to 12. We were in the midst of some of our best all around play of the night. Active on offense, getting by on defense.
4:27 The miss another three and Beckham gets fouled. He misses the FT and we don't pick up Calliste in transition. He nails the three to cut it to 9. Then we went into the famous Stansbury stall.
3:49 Twanny heaves a desperation three from the top of the key. Doesn't draw iron. Shot clock violation and media timeout.
3:35 Out of the break Calliste drives the lane for a nearly uncontested layup. Our 12 point lead is now 7 due to a missed FT and a terrible possession.
3:10 Kodi misses a three from the left wing as the shot clock hits 10. It was a bad decision. Period. It was also the best shot we took in the last five minutes.
2:48 Detroit misses.
2:25 Steele fires a three from the corner with a guy closing at him. Terrible freshman decision. Plenty of time to work some clock and also look to score. We seem to think you can only do one of those a time.
1:58 Detroit gets a bucket and our lead is now 5. Every Bulldog fan alive starts thinking, "Here we go again."
1:23 Ravern misses a heave from about midcourt. Notice that there is a 35 second gap between their bucket and our shot. This is the kind of look you get in our stall offense.
1:14 Calliste drives and hits another layup, and now our comfortable 12 point margin is down to 3 because we tried to run clock and took terrible shots (all threes) while Detroit went to the rim. Oh by the way, Kodi fouled on this layup but Calliste missed the FT, thank goodness.
0:42 Bryant finds himself with the ball at about half court as the shot clock winds down yet again, so it's his turn to launch a guarded 22 foot three. He misses of course.
0:37 Detroit, again going to the rim, gets fouled on the floor and goes to the line to try and score with the clock stopped. Thankfully, again, they miss the front end of the 1 and 1. This was their chance to cut it to 1.
0:28 Kodi hits two FTs to push it back to 5. Huge, huge swing in the game with their misses and Kodi's makes.
0:21 Detroit scored. Guess how. Layup. Back to a 3 pt game.
0:19 Bryant hits 1 of 2 to get us a 4 point lead. Detroit picked up a free throw right after that but could get no closer.
I don't know why any of this shocks me. We do the same thing every time we have a lead. We lose our aggressiveness and try to run the clock out. Against a more quality opponent, that is not going to work. You would think the two UK losses from last year would have taught our staff a lesson, but they seem to have forgotten that already.
Glad we won, but I don't feel like last night was much of a step forward for the team.
