Nick Saban return to coaching?

I can't see it being true, but it's the offseason and people need something to talk about. I think he's way too smart to make the same mistake so many players and coaches have made coming out of retirement. For one thing, nothing about the landscape of college football regarding NIL and the portal has changed since he retired...and only getting worse actually...and he cited that as the main reason for stepping away. For another, his Tide teams towards the end were slipping from their dominance, displaying some undisciplined play which was very uncharacteristic of Saban-coached teams, and it's a rock solid guarantee he would not be able so sniff the success he had at Bama if he came back. Even if he came back to Bama.

It almost never goes as well the 2nd time around.

He has already done it all, but what about, Kent State in 2026? A return to the school he played at?

There current coach Kenni Burns, is in his 3rd year and is 1-23, unless he turns it around, he may not be in that position much longer

I was thinking about something like that. It would be the only kind of move I would understand. Or maybe even drop down to the FCS level where he would be able to be fully devoted to teaching the game, without all the drama associated with FBS football these days. It's not gonna happen, but if he just had the itch to coach without all the peripheral stuff, I'd get it.

Of course publications are already putting out their predictions of possible landing spots, lol. The offseason can't end fast enough.

He could come to Carolina and outdo what Spurrier did if he's looking for a challenge 🤷‍♂️

Or maybe after Belichick and girlfriend have their year at UNC, and get their fill of college football and UNC of them, and they decide to mutually part ways, , he can go there, LOL

Sadly, Carolina has proven to be the coaching legend's career graveyard. Holtz faded away with a whimper and Spurrier walked out on the team mid season.

I don't see Saban having any interest in the job.

Auburn mentioned as a possible landing spot. I guess crazier things have happened?

I would be stunned. Those meddling lowlife rednecks at Auburn would drive him crazy with the way they want to micromanage a coach.

I think the folks who listed Auburn as a possible landing spot are just trying to stir the pot. That might be the only place at which he definitely won't coach.

Makes sense. One would have to think his wife wants him out of the house by this point.

Don't forget Terminator 2.
Yeah. And I have always liked Arnold and his movies. And I have enjoyed watching his TV series FUBAR, on Netflix. I did get a little turned off by him when he said if you believe that you will again see "loved ones" after they die, you are a "fool". I guess I am a "fool" because I look forward to a reunion with my parents, other relatives, friends, acquaintances and my dogs. I can wait, though. That said, we all don't agree on everything.

He is good friends with Jimmy Rane.
Unless there was something behind the scenes at Bama, I can't see him possibly burning down his legacy there to coach at Auburn. It would be one of the most significant storylines in sports history. But it would be fascinating and fun to watch.

Rick Pitino was Head Coach at Kentucky and then Louisville. So a situation like Saban going to Auburn, though rare, would not be unheard of. But I just cannot see that happening. Yet, I was shocked to see Bellichek going to North Carolina. So, I know little and claim less.

He's even older now than the oldest coaches I know of who returned to coaching after apparent retirement.

What has changed about the game that caused him to retire, since he retired? Or does he simply miss the attention?

Well, to start the conversation, NNIL, Transfer Portal, Expanded Playoffs, Major Rule Changes........
NIL and Transfer Portal were in effect when he retired a year and a half ago. What has changed in those two areas? "Expanded playoffs? At Alabama, he had nearly a guarantee into the playoffs. I'm not familiar with the rule changes.

NIL and Transfer Portal were in effect, however both were in their relative infancy and the ramifications were only beginning to reveal themselves across the landscape. This is his quote after Bama lost to Michigan in the CFP.

Nick Saban admits the way Alabama players acted after losing to Michigan in the CFP caused his retirement
“I thought we could have a hell of a team next year, and then maybe 70 or 80 percent of the players you talk to, all they want to know is two things: What assurances do I have that I’m going to play because they’re thinking about transferring, and how much are you going to pay me?”

Saban issues response:

“There is no opportunity that I know of right now that would enhance me to go back to coaching,” Saban said. “I enjoy what I’m doing. I did it for 50 years, I loved it. I loved the relationships with the players. I loved the competition. But it’s another station of life now. I enjoy what I’m doing right now and want to continue to do it — spend more time with my family, my grandchildren, my children. It’s been really, really good.”

That's about as definite a statement as any college coach would ever say. He doesn't say he won't return to coaching...just that it doesn't interest him right now.

Who could have possibly guessed that the rumors generated were to get clicks during the off season when nothing is happening.

NFL or nothing, I would think, with a LOT of personnel control and answering only to the owner.

Or D-II or D-III for that matter.
