Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.
Also your DTS that have been arrested
for domestic violence and aggravated assault
and part of a check cashing scheme already
cut free from Georgia

Good article. This is one of those deals where Alabama fans will credit Saban for giving a kid a second chance (or third or fourth), while the unbiased observers can see it for what it is.

Alabama isn't supposed to be an outlaw program or some distant college football outpost that has to bend its principles in order to bring in some difference makers because they can't recruit them out of HS. This shows Saban cares about foremost about winning and everything else is a distant second.

People said the exact same thing about Nebraska in the 90's.

True, but these are two different situations. Osborne gave a couple kids a second chance who were already in his program while Saban is bringing in a kid with a huge problem. Another difference, some would say that Osborne had to allow a couple "outlaws" as they say into the program to boost the talent level while Saban has to do no such thing. Saban's doing it simply because he can and he's proving that he has tunnel vision. Osborne may also have had similar issues but I don't recall him taking transfers who had punched female students.

I really don't see much here. That guy must be a heck of a football player to get as many chances as he did. Saban took a shot. It didn't work out. He's taken a few guys who are questionable character risks, but I don't think it's extraordinary. Baylor took Phil Taylor and he did okay for them.

Now what Saban does do is oversign and run players off the team in order to make the 85 number. That's my big criticism of Saban. That's why I really don't like how Saban does business.

Now I did hear a good one, probably from an Auburn fan: Bama will go 11-2 this year. 11 arrests, 2 convictions.

Dr. Tom did this **** all the time. He gave them chances, they needed football more than football needed them. Dude was about winning football, it wasn't some moral high ground

At the end of the day Dr. Tom's greatest successes and greatest failures will probably both be tied to him always seeing the best in everyone.

Osborne, told the media and fans what they wanted and needed to hear so he could keep studs playing. Seeing the best in everyone is code for we need Lawrence Phillips to carry the ball Saturday.

hskral - Our needing Phillips is one of the great myths. Look at out o-line that year. Look at our rb's,,, fantastic talent. Coach knew if he didn't give Phillips a chance he was toast, the chance gave him the opportunity to make millions if he could understand and show the character - would be set for life. It didn't happen that way.

Nick Saban: The same as all college coaches, except significantly better at winning games.
