I guess it good that David Pollack no longer hangs out with ESPN. I could see Nick and David brawling on television.

I know the writing has been on the wall for this for sometime, but the shock for me is that we ever got this far with it. Saban wasn’t exactly great with the media from my recollection. Now he’s going to be one of them. I just feel like he’s be annoyed by all of it. Not to mention he’s pretty dry so not sure how that will play out.

He’s also still employed by Alabama if I recall correctly. With that being the case, might seem a little bit irresponsible to put Saban in this position being he’s on payroll at a school he’s basically covering.

He actually has a pretty good sense of humor. It depends on if he lets himself go (like Corso, but maybe not that far) or if he keeps his coach demeanor…that would be dry.

They never hesitate to put Herbstreit on the call for Ohio State and Clemson games. Where he played and where his sons walked on.
Employed or not, Bama will obviously always mean something more to Saban.

I think it's fine. He's a competitor and that alone will drive him to do a great job as a professional. Besides, Rece Davis is a Bama grad and Pollack is a Georgia alum. Desmond Howard, is a Michigan alumnus. There's plenty of "conflict of interest" to go around. The one who needs to go is Corso. I have enjoyed him but he was used up a long time ago and the set is getting crowded.

But we can certainly see the difference in being an alum and being on the payroll. As much as we think of him pumping up Bama because of it, you have to consider the other way around. What if he does his job well and criticizes publicly the university and coached he literally works with. Just doesn’t seem wise to me.

Do I think it will be a huge issue? No. But a lot of that is 1) because he won’t say anything bad about Bama who pays him (which is the issue but won’t bring up the issue) and 2) I expect he eventually eases out of that role at Bama anyway because of the conflict that arises.

FWIW, I think Herbstriet does a pretty decent job of being real with Ohio State. I’m fine with Desmond being a Michigan guy, Kirk being OSU, etc…it’s who they are. But they have to be able to criticize and question those schools to when it’s appropriate. Kirk was basically disowned by OSU fans for a while and they are still extremely vulgar towards him because he’s decent at his job. Doesn’t mean he’s perfect and always right down the line on things. Don’t expect him to be. But if he were paid by the university, I’d only see him pumping it, which discredits any “journalist” in my opinion.

The biggest positives I see with Saban is obviously his insight into the game. But also that they are getting an SEC guy in there now that Pollack left. Reese Davis doesn’t count as he’s a moderator / host. It made way too much sense for Pollack to be on there, especially with UGA’s rise. But it was kind of surreal in the era where the SEC has dominated that you basically had only B10 representation last year.
