The crazy part to me is that all of what you mention...free education, books, room, board, top notch medical care, top notch physical training, top notch nutrition, etc....was all considered of no value. Whenever it came to the players getting compensation, nobody ever said "hey, how much is their total scholarship package worth, taking all factors/perks into consideration?"

The other crazy thing is that the top 3 players haven't even really accomplished anything in college (indeed, one has barely even played), in contrast to 4-6 who have led playoff or playoff-contending teams.

For the top 3, it's all about potential. I can think of better ways to spend money.

NIL should've been implemented as only a cut of sales of gear with the athlete's name or image on it and a reasonable stipend that's the same for all positions and across all schools. If a superstar gets a deal with a private company, good for him/her but that's not a check the school has to write. And there has to be a limit on the number of players on NIL otherwise Oregon would hoard all the players.

That would have been a reasonable add-on to all the 'FREE STUFF'' mentioned they were already getting in the OP.
But none of that ''FREE STUFF'' was recognized as compensation by those athletes on scholarship when NIL was under consideration.
