but it would probably mean lots of years with only 6 home games, because you would have 5 SEC road games every other year instead of just 4. We can't afford to buy every game like Florida or Alabama, so we'd end up with 6 in those years where we have 5 SEC road games.

As long as stronger SEC schools go play top teams from other conferences, we don't need a 9th SEC game. If we added a 9th SEC game, even the Alabama's and LSU's would have to avoid stiff out of conference competition, which would just give fans from other conferences an excuse to vote SEC teams down, as there would be no clear way to make comparisons between conferences.

I don't think his penultimate paragraph is a good argument though:

Slive has been viewed by many as a visionary. To maintain that reputation, he must simply keep pace with the rest of the nation at this point.
How can one follow yet be a visionary?

If he really wants to be a visionary, then expand to 16 teams, then go to a pre-set11-game, 7-conference game schedule with four divisions & in the 12th game (after the rivalry week), there will be an 8th conference game-- the four first place teams play each other and so on:

(e.g., East 1 vs. Mideast 1; West 1 vs. Midwest 1 - winners play in SEC Championship Game)
(East 2 vs. Mideast 2; West 2 vs. Midwest 2 - 12th game of the season)
(East 3 vs. Mideast 3; West 3 vs. Midwest 3 - 12th game of the season)
(East 4 vs. Mideast 4; West 4 vs. Midwest 4 - 12th game of the season)

And these could rotate as well or could be set up so that they're seeded according to BCS rank.

That way you'll have higher ranked SEC teams playing each other and building up their BCS profile, right?

It's been on the table ever since expansion. But it's pretty clear that there is no support for it among the coaches and very little amont the ADs. And most of his reasons are just plain wrong. I'll take just a few on here:

1. Another SEC game means more value for ticket-buying fans.

SEC fans get the best value of any fans in the country already.

2. The league’s television partners would prefer SEC versus SEC over SEC versus pansy any day of the week.

The non-conference game that would be cut wouldn't be a pansy game, it would be a big game. A 9-game schedule would be the end of LSU-Oregon, Auburn-Clemson, Bama-Penn St., kiss the upcoming 10-game series between USC and UNC in Charlotte goodbye, and maybe even UF-FSU.

5. Such a plan would result in more inventory for a potential SEC television network down the road.

No. Inventory would still be 7 home games per year per team.

8. Perhaps most importantly, the league would hurt itself rather than help itself by softening its schedule. Other leagues are making their schedules tougher.

An 8-game SEC schedule is a lot tougher than a 9-game Big 10, PAC-12, or ACC schedule (and it's not a fact that the ACC is going to 9 when they add Syracuse & Pitt).

PAC-12 went to 9 when the 12th game was added
Big 12 & Big 10 went to 9 last year
Acc is talking about maybe going to 9 when it adds Syracuse & Pitt.

Big 10 & PAC-12 have announced that each team from each conference will play 1 game against a team from the other conference, but it will be several years before it's fully implemented.

Until it's obviously hurting SEC teams in BCS selections, there is zero reason to change.
