Byrne telling Bama fans to "fight back" against big money NIL poaching... by committing big money NIL poaching.

One thing I've never really thought about... how affluent is the Bama fanbase? I know they have a lot of t-shirt sidewalk fans, but are they going to find themselves in the middle of the pack in the NIL/transfer era?

The general sentiment that I read on their boards at the moment: "Are we about to become the next Nebraska?"

Fan and alumni support is just that, and they have plenty of it. Similar to Auburn, Tennessee and Georgia (and even Ole Miss to a lesser extent). But it's the Oregon's and SMUs, and really Texas and Texas A&Ms, that they can't compete with. And now Michigan with all their famous folks going all in. Heck maybe even Arkansas if their corporate folks ever got crazy - though I doubt they will. Tyson and Walmart sponsor things, but they aren't going to be paying millions for football players.

If they still had Saban, this likely doesn't matter as much. But now their ship is taking on water, and that water has great white sharks in it.

No one can match the Texas schools. All you can really hope for is they overplay their hand and end up with a bunch of spoiled entitled players

Yep, even Bama will struggle to stay on top unless something changes. They have money, alumni and fans they just don't have TX, aTm, MI, Ohio State money, alumni and fans.

The Bama model is falling apart before our eyes. I hate this NIL era but I am honestly loving the end of the advantage/entitled era at Bama. About damn time.

They have a lot of sidewalk fans, all over the country and world really, but they also manage to get over 100,000 into the stadium every home game. He's not sending letters to those who buy tee shirts at Walmart, because he doesn't even know who they are. He's after the ones who attend games and already contribute to their version of the Bulldog Club (Tide Pride?).

We know that the Barn has at least three billionaire families who are willing to sell their soul to win. Unfortunately, with the money they are investing, comes meddling.

It has been reported that one reason Saban was so successful is that he removed all meddling from boosters from the program.

I have a friend that's a huge Bama fan tell me that they don't have anymore money than State and that they've never had to pay for players. He thinks that the NIL is unfair. It was hard not to laugh.

Every school has their "holier then thou" fans that really believe their program would never cheat to gain an advantage. I remember when we lost Scam to Auburn listening to some of our fans say we would never pay a player. Haha, Bear Bryant had boosters spending millions on players.

I think there is a HUGE misconception that Bama pulled kids solely based on money. It's not true.

Under the Saban regime, kids walked into their trophy room and knew they would be coached by some of the best coaches in college football. On top of that, every NFL general manager had Saban on speed dial. Elite kids wanted that sort of coaching and the network. The money was the cherry on top. Contrary to popular belief, they were getting some really good kids for less money than other schools because of the perks. I know, some kids were all about the money. Those kids went to Auburn and OM.

Now that Saban is gone, they are having to pay full retail. They aren't used to that.

This is correct. The better your program is, the less you have to pay. But you still have to pay.

Hell like I said a few weeks ago. There will always be talent in the portal no matter how many four and five stars the blue blood signs. Those guys get there, and they learn fast they are just a body on the sideline then boom they are in the portal wanting to go somewhere else. What use to save the blue blood was the rules. You had to get permission from you school, and you had to sit out year. They can have all the number one signing class they want you know the next season many of them will be in the portal looking for money and a place they will get on the field.

It's about the money, the non disclosure and the residual benefits of their descendants (and parents). Scheduled payroll as long as no NDA was violated. Free tuition. Etc etc. And yes NFL scouts circling the campus like vultures. That package offer isn't matching what others are offering.

Follow the money. It's no longer that sweet.

Players being "poached" from AL and Byrne begging for money to stop it is so ironic to me after watching them do the exact same damn thing for over 40+ years. I have always liked him, but hoping he is struggling now with this

An NDA? You serious, Clark? How long do you suppose they keep paying the players to stay quiet?

An agreement like that would never be legally enforceable, so as soon as a journalist came along with more money, then all bets are off.

Yes. Private bank. Private deals. That's the only way. Talk and it's over.

How about, it's just understood in athletic culture that you don't talk about the extra benefits you receive? It's better for everyone involved. Keep quiet and you stay a member of the club. The players who accepted money tend to catch more **** than the boosters who paid it.

Except for Logan Young, who mysteriously fell UP his staircase.

Private banks with long term payouts to players? That's not a very good way to keep things hidden.
